November, 1983 marked the twentieth anniversary of Portsmouth High School, providing a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on the illustrious history of PHS. To com- memorate this anniversary, the Leg- end staff asked some of our long- standing faculty and staff members to share with us recollections of their years at Portsmouth, including their ideas, thoughts, anecdotes, and gener- al “reflections” on any changes that they have observed. We hope that as you peruse this yearbook, you will re- flect on your own years at Portsmouth High School, and that they will afford you many pleasant memories. Yearbook Message Graduating Class 1984 Administration The theme of the ’84 Yearbook sets the mood of the composite of thought that the Administration wishes to express to the Class of 1984. While graduation time is often a period of reflecting on the future, it may also provide a good opportunity for some reflection on the present. The receiving of your diploma is the result of four years that encompassed not only educa- tion, but many other aspects of your life and the lives of many others. To have reached this point of your high school success involved sacrifices, confron- tations, compromises and understanding. All of the forementioned took place with par- ents, teachers, friends and the school. All of the participants had your welfare in mind and your success as their goal. As you re- flect upon those four years a sincere act of appreciation by you to all who helped you would be appropriate. When you reflect upon what you have accomplished during your high school years, certainly a pat on the back is well deserved by you. In looking ahead to the future, reflect on the lessons you learned from the past, the satis- faction of achievement of the present and the confidence of success in the years ahead. Dwyer Mrs McGaw Nurse Mrs Fitzgerald Cafeteria And Custodial Staff Mrs Ferreira Mrs Melacon Mrs Silvia Mr Ney Mr Silvia Mr Lavoie Mr Rivers Head Custodian Mr Arkins Mr Smith Mr Nunes Mr Martmeau Mr. Rivers with Mr. Sandan, Mrs. Stinton's father FACE TO FACE by Tony Silvia There are few people at P.H.S. who can boast of having worked here since our school opened its doors some seven years ago People come and go. but Mr. Rivers, our head custodian, has been here ever since the building was built. “It’s one of the greatest jobs I’ve ever had.” Mr. Rivers beamed in his bright Irish accent recently. “I’ve always been interested in children and when I see what this school has to offer What do I like the most about my work? The surroundings of the whole job. meeting new people, seeing new kids start at the seventh grade and go on to graduate.......You know I’ve had the honor of going through every graduating class this school has ever had. the dedication of the football field, in fact every first this school has ever had. I’ve been there.” Originally from upstate New York. Mr Rivers was one in a family of ten and a result of “not enough money to go around.” had to go to work at an early age. “In those days, dreams were not dreams, the reality was you had to make money to support your family. he reflects. Then, fol- lowing a five year term in the service, he moved to Portsmouth, where he has lived with his wife and two sons (aged 9 and 13) for twenty years. When Mr. Rivers speaks, he exemplifies a genu- ine pride and love for his job and school. ”1 think we have one of the greatest faculties there is,” he says. “They’re all so dedicated and if the student wants to learn it’s here .... I don't want to slight any department because I think they’re all great, but I think the strongest is Social Studies. Now there’s a group of teachers who are always working with and helping one another.” Mr. River's basic philosophy of life is “raise your family, don’t want the world, as long as you cover your basic needs and have a little left over for enjoyment......... This most satisfying moment came with the birth of his first son. “whom we waited ten years for. I think it’s been the highlight of my life so far.” In the way of hobbies and interests. Mr. Rivers is. by his own admission, a “sports fanatic.” “I follow the teams all over and I die just as much as the kids around here when they lose. He says that he’d like to see more enthusiasm when it comes to sports because “after all. those boys are out there representing your school and wearing your colors.” Mr. Rivers’ one wish is that “more childen take a more active part in everything within the school ........It’s been the same people who do everything. It’s not that the others are not of- fered the opportunity; it’s that they’re holding back.” Before we concluded. Mr. Rivers’ face turned dead serious for a moment. “You know, he said, “some people around here call me an old grouch.” His face turned to a huge smile. “Well I’m not really, but I don’t get paid to smile. I get paid to run this building and if I show anger it’s because someone has done something very wrong.” This author can testify to the fact that Mr. Rivers is no grouch Reprinted from The Pioneer Vo. 6— No. 6—February 1970 Portsmouth High School Teaching at P.H.S. has been an ex- tremely enjoyable experience. I have made many friends here and at the same time, hopefully, have affected in a positive way, several of the young people who have walked these hall- ways. Most noteworthy, however, is that although the faces may change over the years, the students of P.H.S. have been, and are, outstanding indivi- duals who are rewarding to teach and, most important, a pleasure to know. I can recall having stu- dents in my class who were only four years younger than I was at the time. Our first assembly was a memorial to JFK at which time one of the older teachers, who thought I was one of the students, insisted that I, “sit with the rest of your class.” That doesn't hap- pen to me any more. I've seen soccer develop a strong winning tradition with a lot of pride, the togetherness of the Little Compton students, the con- fusion of the late sixties and early sev- enties, and our present determination to keep pace with a strongly competi- tive society. Through all of the trage- dies, routines, and triumphs, I have seen children grow into young adults. Ray Sabourin Mr Ciccone Mrs Helfner 20 Years Ago! I had hair! (some) I was 20 lbs. lighter! I was single! (I think) Having a ball! Had a sports car! Late nights 20 Years Later No hair! Fat and fatigued! Married (I think) My feet hurt! No sports car! In bed by 9:30! Looking toward retirement But, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve loved being part of P.H.S. history. I think the world of many great students, parents, facul- ty and staff and thank them for making these past 20 years a very memorable experience. For the past 19 years I’ve enjoyed being part of the PHS family. I am fond of my students and of my colleagues and I love my work both in the classroom and on the athletic fields. I am proud of our school and of the high caliber of our young people. At Portsmouth, I’ve experienced one of my happiest moments — the joys of sharing in a state soccer championship — and certainly one of my most de- spairing — the agony of the deaths of Will, Chris and Tim. PHS has been a learning experience for me as well. 1 would like to think that I have played at least some small role in its history. Richard S. Thibault I have been a teacher in Portsmouth for twenty-three years. For the most part I have enjoyed my years here. I like teaching; I love to impart knowl- edge and to challenge the intellectual capabilities of young people. The ma- jority were equal to the task; they went on to success. My only regret is that too many were content with medi- ocrity and wasted their talents here at P.H.S. Mr Briand Mr O’Neill Victor J. St. Laurent It may seem that I’ve been around for as many years as some of the older teachers, Joe Narcizo, George Mello, Ray Sullivan; however. I've only been at PHS for 6 years. My affiliation with PHS was that I coached football for 18 years, enjoying every year. Beginning in 1963, we had some outstanding football players. We always had win- ning seasons, losing some heart-break- ers. I worked with 2 great coaches (Sulli- van and Narcizo) and we had fun. I cherish the memories over the years and especially the young men I had the pleasure of coaching. One thing that I did not realize then, but do now, is that teachers in this school really care about you! Being a teach- er, coach, and interacting with stu- dents is something that means a lot to me. I have found that the faculty and staff are dedicated and committed to the most mean- ingful education and support services possible for the students whom we serve. They have demonstrated their commitment as people who take their jobs seriously, but not themselves. They are fine human beings dedicated to the proper development of the whole person - the student, the citizen, the worker, and the consu mer - who will face a variety of human exper- iences and challenges The present administration has done an excel- lent job of setting a positive tone for a school that was. at one time, lacking goals, direction and leadership to a school that “says what it means and means what it says. ' The overwhelming majority of the students that we serve and have served make our efforts very rewarding in terms of professional fulfillment, job satisfaction, and a sense of personal accom plishment Joseph L. It seems like only yesterday that Louis Sousa was knocking on my door telling me that the President had been shot. 1 re- member my first day at Portsmouth vividly because of that terrible tragedy. It was a beautiful November day. The river was flat calm. Society wasn't however. We were just beginning the turbulent 60’s. When I first started teaching, conformity was the rule. The sixties changed all that. Dress codes went. Curricula were challenged. These were exciting and difficult years. Because of those years, Portsmouth High School is a much different place than the one I started teaching at. I think we have emerged a bet- ter school as a result. We have tried all kinds of innovations throughout the years — some good, some bad. What we have gained from all of this, I think, is a better grasp of what is necessary for students to do well. Hopefully we can take some of the lessons from the last 20 years, and make Portsmouth an even better place in the future. Bob Pimentel Social Studies Mr Sousa Dept Head Mr Sullivan Mr Masse Pres John F Kennedy (May 29. 1917 Nov 22. 1963) Mr Dwyer Mr Pimentel Mr St. Laurent Mr Richards Business Mrs Maloney Mr Sullivan Modern Language Mr. Thibault September, 1965 —June, 1984 Actually my early years at P.H.S. have a lot in common with the prut several years — in a very positive way. Times have never been better. However, the open-campus of the seventies — which included food fights, van- dalism both inside and outside of the build- ing, motorcycles in the halls, half the student body at Nadeau's and crippling budget cut- s — is a period of time I would just as soon forget. The changes in business education have been phenomenal. We went from mechani- cal data processing, manual and mechanical type writers, 10 key mechanical adding ma- chines, rotary calculators and comptometers to very sophisticated office equipment. To- day we have 18 computer terminals, 12 word-processors and several electronic cal- culators and typewriters —and more changes are coming tomorrow! At the risk of sounding a little corny. I'll say that the most enjoyable part of the job is the students. I have met a lot of nice people here over the years. I still run into many of them and really feel great when they say, “Boy, you haven't changed a bit!” Now maybe they are putting me on. . . but it‘s a nice thing to say anyway. Bob LaFrance When 1 first started teaching at P.H.S., a tradition” which had developed was the annual Faculty-Varsity Soccer game played in the fall. Male faculty took the field against the varsity soccer team for a full after school game. Most teachers in those days could go for a full game, and although we usually lost, we put up a fairly respectable showing. Ob- viously, few of the faculty could still do that today without risking a coronary, but most of us would still enjoy the chance to engage in activities of that kind. Many of us have slowed down physically, but few of us have lost the desire to work with kids. It’s still fun and still challenging. Raymond Masse The first official day of classes at PHS was on Nov. 22, 1963 and I remember it as an eventful and exciting day. PHS was still un- der construction and classes were conducted in the A wing only. Our happiness soon end- ed when we were informed, in our class- rooms, that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas. Since that day I have witnessed PHS exper- ience its ups and downs, its graduates be- coming civic leaders, business and profes- sional people and its athletic teams win championships. After twenty years, I still believe that PHS can only be as good as the students at PHS want it to be. Ray Sullivan Mrs Chace Mr Reed Mirrors should reflect a little before throwing back images. Jean Cocteau Class Advisor And Class Counselor Life is a series of days. Make each of these days a good effort and the result will be a great life. Let's always look back on these good days, with an eye to a greater future. Good luck, George Mello Counselor Four years of personal commitment as your advisor have come to an end for me. Growing richer with time, my memories of you shall live on. So many of you gave unselfishly of your time helping to enrich the lives of others along the way. Don’t stop here on graduation day. As you enter the next phase of your life, continue to reach out and remain involved. Don’t permit yourselves to become mere spectators of life. I grant you that life is less complicated if you don’t become involved; however, the rewards are few. As John Kennedy said: “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at best, if he wins, knows the thrills of high achievement, and, if he fails, at least fails daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.’’ Much success to each of you. I know you will be successful participants in the arena called life. Janet Bazar 32 Class History SENIOR CLASS HISTORY September 3, 1980, marked the beginning of four exciting (well . . at least unforgettable) years at Portsmouth High School. At the time, it was impossible for us to imagine the impact that the Class of 1984 would have on PHS during the next few years. As Freshmen we were faced with an entirely new environment: new teachers, new classes, and most important, new responsibil- ities. Along with these responsibilities came many new activities, such as Homecoming. The theme for our first Homecoming Float was “The Rainbow Connection”. (Naturally, it was the best in the parade!) As Homecoming ended that year, we only had a vague idea of the true spirit of the event. Our funds were considerably low during our first year. In order to raise money for our Semi-Formal we held bake sales, car washes, and a flea market NO, WE DIDN’T SELL FLEAS!!! The theme for our Freshman Semi-Formal, “The Best of Times”, appropriately summed up that year. M M sales and an excellent Semi-Formal highlighted our Soph- omore year. Maybe it was the belief that “M M’s make friends” which prompted us to sell so many (Little did we know what we were getting ourselves into!). As the number of fun- draisers increased, so did our treasury, which helped us gain recognition. However, at the end of the year we received more recognition than we had bargained for, mainly due to the fam- ous (or infamous) poster PR for our Sophomore Semi-Formal, “Open Arms”. By this time, our thoughts had turned toward finally becoming Upperclassmen! It was hard to believe that two years had flown (dragged!?!?!?!) by and we were halfway to the top. As Juniors we were faced with our most difficult year at PHS. Added pressure, such as narrowing down career choices and taking the dreaded SAT’s, signified the new challenges that lay ahead of us. Although this was a difficult year, we still found the time to have fun! We received our long awaited class rings at Valle’s, on October 15, 1982. Once again we displayed our superior float making abilities and unique ideas as “Gangsters” in the Homecoming Parade. Thanks to our great football team, we sank the (hungover) Islanders at the Thanksgiving Game with a score of 34-19! Dances and parties (along with Alka-Seltzer the morning after) provided relief from the everyday routine of school and work. On May 19. 1983 we gave up studying to go “Dancing in the Streets” with the “Rockadiles” at the Biltmore Plaza. The warm weather brought with it a feeling of restless- ness, and we anxiously awaited the last day of school! SENIORS!? !! Somehow we managed to survive Spirit Week-Powder Puff Football.the Pep Rally, the Homecoming Parade, Game, and Dance! We showed just how spirited our class was by winning the “Yelling Contest” and the “Best Float Award” With Homecoming over, we began to concentrate on shaping our individual futures. As we struggled with college and job applications, we managed to spend time with friends. Our class became closer and we developed a new bond as the year continued. We partied it up at our Senior Halloween Party and looked forward to Senior Week! We can look back on our accomplishments and be proud of the contributions we have made. Our Senior year is not an ending but a beginning. We, the Class of 1984. Coach Blaess 94 After a loss in the season opener to East Providence, the 1983 Varsity Soccer team rebounded to put forth one of the best seasons in the last few years at PHS. The extremely quiet and almost always reserved team operated under the able coaching of Mr. O’Hara and Mr. Blaess and the captainship of Bill Berger, Jack Granger, and Rob Mitchell. The “Cardiac Kids,” as they became known, frequently counted on the goal scoring of Rich Tatem and Jimmy Hall, the defense of Rob Oswald and the superb goal tending of Ken Morton to pull them through their heart stopping performances. Other stand outs on the team were Bill Lauder, Hyung Kim, and Jim Deffet. Jack Granger Bill Berger The Portsmouth High School Varsity Soccer season was going strong even before the regular season got started. Many people tried out for a position on the team, so there was much talent to choose from. After some early inconsistencies, the team soon developed into a reliable divisional power in contention for the championship. Unfortunately, the team finished the regular sea- son three points out of first place, and then lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the playoffs. Girls soccer was born and PHS joined the league as one of its seven charter members. The Portsmouth girls wound up with a 7-4-1 record, good for third place and qualified for the state playoffs. The team lost out in the state semi-finals 3-1 to Westerly. The team showed determina- tion and exhibited pride in PHS. With only 5 seniors on the squad, the team should be even more successful in years to to come. Dave Kamps, Steve Berger and Frank McNeilly at fullback. Controlling midfield were Scott Atkins, Chris Rego and Rob McManus. They began the 1983-84 season very slowly, but as the season progressed, they improved. In spite of the fact that the team played in a higher conference than they should have, the games were close, and were often lost due to bad breaks and unfortunate errors; however, when they mini- mized their errors, they emerged the victors, as in the case of the Homecoming Game against North Providence. The Patriots’ victory made this year’s Homecoming dance a very enjoyable experience. On Thanksgiving Day, despite a tremendous effort, the team came up a little short in its bid for an upset over Middletown, a larger team in a higher division that had the Pats outnumbered 2 to 1. The game was an exciting one, with Middletown barely managing to win by one touch- down, using a trick play to slip past the Portsmouth de- fense. Good performances were turned in by Bob Ireland, who did the scoring for PHS, and Dave Platt, who helped him. The awesome front line of Terry Young, Doug Grant, Scott Wellington, Paul Magliocco, Rich Clement and John Berard supplied the blocking that enabled the team to score. George Easley, Dom Lepore, Glenn Hannon, Keith Kosoff, and Chris Hamilton also made major contributions to the team’s attempt to overthrow Middletown. Throughout the season, a superb coaching job was done by coaches Joe Narcizo, Robert Silvia and Ron Miller. The team deeply appreciates the coaches' tireless efforts to prepare them, not only for the game of football, but for the game of life as well. Mr. Narcizo always demanded pride, and in return he taught them that true victory is obtained from knowing that you have done the best that you could do. After the season ended, five Patriots were honored by being selected for the All Conference teams: Doug Grant, was chosen for the first team, and Bob Ireland for the second. Coach A1 Sweet felt that the team’s defense and scrappy play were the key to the Pats’ success. The team found more of its scoring in all division guard Tim Kehoe and junior David Platt. The responsibility of rebounding was placed into the able hands of stellar forwards Keith Kosoff and Skyscraper John Berard. Wim “Pistol” Chase and hustling Dominick Lepore provided the team with depth in both scoring and rebounding. George Easley, an outstanding leaper, and Rob Mitchell, a defensive specialist, came through with several fine games to help the Pats out. Chuck “Moses” Bailey, Glenn “Cannon” Hannon, and Dave Vacchi were strong substitutes coming off the bench. The team would like to thank its wild fans for their support throughout the season. The team showed an undying spirit by never giving up. Each person showed team spirit by giving 150 percent, even though we all knew that our record of wins was very low. However, we did manage one win against East Providence that encouraged us. Even though we knew from the beginning that it would be an uphill battle to do well in the Class A divi- sion, we put up a valiant fight. Coach Alfano The girls’ softball team of 1983 was a team in transition from one which had tremendous poise and maturity in winning two straight Eastern Divi- sion Championships and three staight Newport County Champion- ships to a group of eager yet inexpe- rienced athletes Many close games were decided in the later innings by the seasoned opponents There was tremendous improvement by the freshmen and sophomores and sev eral suprises among the veterans Through their hard work and deter mination the return to supremacy is inevitable The overall record was 11 wins and 10 losses Self-discipline, teamwork and the ability to enjoy the game is our goal Frank J.
