THE 1983 LEGEND of Portsmouth High School Portsmouth, Rhode Island 4 5 r i iliU 'MM■«' i iui; «n •l m ,i Jr OUR DEAR MR. MANSI THE 1983 LEGEND IS DEDICATED TO YOU In Steptember 1979, we, the class of 1983, entered Portsmouth High School. When we first arrived, fears, expectations and excitement were feelings which colored our new outlooks. Upon our arrival, Mr. Mansi became a constant force in our lives. For the next three years, he guided us with his wisdom, positive attitudes toward others and the desire to see our class mature. Together, yet separately, we and Mr. Mansi grew in our understanding of each other and formed an un- breakable bond between us. Growth is the key word which described Mr. Mansi. Together, with his interest in the individual growth of our personalities and the growth of our character, he guided us through good times and bad times. Mr. Mansi’s friendship with us grew as did our respect and admiration for him and for the principles he represented. 0 Though there were conflicts, as there always are in close relation- ships, his patience, sensitivity, and generosity prevailed and together we resolved all obstacles. In addition to personal growth, the nurturing of plants and flowers was a great avocation of Mr. Mansi’s. He worked with nature and had a love for all things living. He strived for healthier and heartier plants just as he enjoyed watching his students blossom. Mr. Mansi knew that success could not be achieved without personal effort and that the benefits of a harvest cannot be reaped without labor. The words of the English novelist, George Eliot, seem particularly apt when we think of Mr. Mansi: “It never will rain roses: when we want To have more roses we must plant more trees.’’ The Spanish Gy pay. Director of Instruction To the Graduating Class of 1983 During your High School career you had been offered chal- lenges in many areas and under many guises. The challenges required acceptance, even though they posed questions whose answers might have been contrary to what you expected No doubt there were times when the challenges required toleration, when acceptance was difficult and no other resort seemed possible Many instances were evident where the chal- lenges were met with understanding, followed by examples of mature adjustment In these few words, with the resounding emphasis of chal- lenge in the background, is expressed a resume of some of the experiences of the class of '83 at P.H.S. Just as important as the experiences that the class of '83 endured, are the oppor tunites that this Class has given to the Administration and Staff Of the many pleasant opportunities two stand out beyond all others First, that the Administration and Staff had the oppor tumty to work with a Class of young men and women who displayed a maturity and understanding far beyond their years Second, that the Administration and Staff were given the op- portunity to see Senior Class leadership displayed in an almost forgotten area-School Spirit. The class of '83 worked diligently to revive the Patriot Spirit and has now left a challenge to future classes to foster the Spirit of P H.S. With many thanks, and pleasant memories, best wishes. To the Class of 1983 Since September of 1979 you, the members of the Class of 1983, have encountered many obstacles and difficult times. You can be proud that you were capable of overcoming these obstacles. I hope that you can review the memory of your troubled and sad times and draw memories that may someday be pleasant ones. Through the sharing of all your experiences, the good and bad — you can now move forward better pre- pared to face the future. It has been a pleasure working with you as a counselor for the past year. You are an outstanding group of young men and women and 1 wish you the best for the future. May God Bless All Of You, Albert A. Cataldo Guidance Director “The great use of a life is to spend if for something that outlasts it.” — William James The past four years have seen the Class of 83 experience moments of jublilation and moments of despair. You’ve leanrned more than Geometry, Biology, and Music. You’ve learned about life and death. Graduation is an ending and a beginning. You will experience many more as you travel the “Roads of Life.” I am proud to have been part of these four years of your lives and I wish you all the happiness in the world. Good Bye and Gook Luck, Bob Rutkiewicz Class History “The Innocent Age” Dan Fogelberg “Capture the moment Carry the day Stay with the chase As long as you may. Follow the dreamer, The fool, and the sage, Back to the days of The Innocent Age . . . Freshmen we were and our lack of experience was noticeable. While trying to follow in the paths that others had made, we waded through our first year in high school “Storybook endings Never appear They’re just someone’s way of Leading us here Waiting for wisdom To open the cage We forged the fires of The Innocent Age Being a sophomore made us feel more at ease. Responsibilities increased, but we began learning how to enjoy the lives we were destined to lead. Curosity and pleasure invaded our senses as new experiences were met at every door. “Back at the start It was easy to see No one to own to Nowhere to be ... ” This, the junior year, was when we opened up and were honest with ourselves. True personalities began to show and the plea- sures of high school were predominant. Worries were few and classes seemed short. We enjoyed partying with friends on the weekends, but returning to school also meant being with good friends.Clubs were joined or left alone, but everyone knew what was meant by young and carefree. “Fretful horizons Worrisome skies Tearful misgivings Burning you eyes Yearnings unanswered Reckon the wage you Pay to recapture The Innocent Age ... Our senior year, supposedly the best year of our lives, started out tough, decisions were to be made that we tried to avoid. With the support of those who cared, we made it through that stage and began to feel free and excited about the end drawing near. While most of us got jobs and were ready for our journey through life, others were still drifting in a fog, unaware of anything except their diplomas. We will hold on to these memories as long as we can; for these days will never come again. But, we will look forward to the years ahead with “great expectations”; with hopes and dreams ahead of us, the best is yet to come! Karen E. Wallin Cindi L. At the end of the evening all of our hard work and effort had paid off. It was one night that ended our junior year with fond, unforgettable memories. 72 JUNIOR RING LUNCHEON Our class rings are a cherished symbol of Portsmouth High School. More specifically, they are the symbol of the graduating class. They will be carried with us long after we have left the confines of PHS. When we look at them, we will remember going through our morning classes on the day of the luncheon. On that day, we were so excited we were in a complete daze. Once we were at the restaurant (The Coach- men), we worked our magical feats trying to fit all our friends at one table. We loved cheering our classmates on as they went up to receive their rings. Trying to decide who we should have turn our ring that special 83rd time was a major decision. The memories of this special day will linger in our minds forever, because they are as impor- tant to us as our rings and will last us a lifetime. 73 w ( a r 983 • $ruu e i 1 044 to Ss ttesict Srbfi tosriojte f e H4 -+ 'n na - Aie usu ■ l lue (5ye. j Aa 44eo ay, flurte 6 93 3 fi.m. — - Af suy i ffuour he ( ijSeeaA yPj tff' ( jusrvictA444sn Smile pretty Lets cruise. NarcizofCoach) A Game to Be Remembered On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1982, all of Coach Narcizo’s hard work and dedication finally paid off in one of the best games Portsmouth had played in a long time. Prior to that time, It had definitely been a lackluster season for the Patriots, and most of the fans, including Coach Narcizo, would have been satisfied to lose with a little pride still intact. The players, however, had other ideas, and played a very determined, no nonsense game, demonstrating good teamwork and well-executed skills. Outstanding performances were turned in by Billy Faison, Craig Clark, and Bob Ireland. They rumbled with “rushing fever” for 307 yards, con- tributing greatly to the final score of 37-19. Meanwhile, in the background, but getting the job done just the same, were Tim Lynch, Allen Icart, and Robbie McLaughlin. All around, it was a game to remember for the Patri- ots, and a dream come true for Coach Joe Narcizo. The depth of his team had finally come shining through. 94 by Gail Wagner Ricky Moore -y M J mi % PATR OTS As for those wingy mysteries in divinity and airy subtleties in religion, which have unhinged the brains of better heads, they never stretched the piamater of mine. 95 JV FOOTBALL Kneeling. The acts ranged from seri- ous pantomine and singing to side- splitting comedy. The show opened with the MC's (Jeff Long and Chris Souza) portraying the Blues Broth- ers, accompanied by a talented pit band. From then on came dancing, singing, and a hillbilly asking ques- tions about tootsie roll pops. And as you wander to distant lands and new experiences, we wish the best to you. May we always be remenbered in mind and heart. The Class of 1984 180 'I' To My Friends, School represented a shelter and a support system for each of us as we attempted to unravel the unique puzzle that was adolescence. Commencement brings the challenge of self-discovery and a commitment to self-reliance. To solve our personal mysteries requires a continual search for knowledge. As Thomas Edison stated, “We do not know one millionth of one percent about anything.” The desire to learn must not falter with our departure but must march forward with determi- nation.
