Congratulations to each member of the Portsmouth High School graduating Class of 1981. You are to be commended for your out- standing academic performance, maturity and school leadership. Robert A. DeRobbio Principal Not enjoyment, and not sorrow. Is our destined end or way; But to act. that each tomorrow Brings us farther than today. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A Psalm of Life During your years at Portsmouth High School, you have no doubt experienced some sorrow and some enjoyment. These experiences are part of the maturing process as well as part of life. From these experiences a part of reality is faced and dealt with and character begins to take form. From dealing with these experiences and the resulting information of character, hopefully comes the realization of what tremendous po- tential each of you as an individual possesses, and what great accom- plishments you can achieve in the tomorrows to come. Portsmouth High School has experienced some sorrow and some enjoyment with you. Sorrow to see the class of ’81 leave, remembering the enjoyment you gave to PHS. but most of all. filled with the warm confidence in your ability to bring us farther than today. My congratulations and best wishes to all of you. John M. Ferreira. Sr. Assistant Principal The class of ’81” has been confronted with a great deal of change. Change in the educational environment at Portsmouth High School, and in the physical plant of the High School. The next change will be of the upmost importance to you as individuals. The transformation from being a member of the PHS community to a member of the adult world will be your next endeavor. The road to success will not be an easy one. Striving to handle changes in course will require intelligence, perseverance, ingenuity, and integrity. These traits which PHS has tried to instill in you should help you cope with your changing environment. Hope your future endeavors bring you success and happiness. Joseph J. As underclassmen, our class entered this high school with many questions, fears and expectations. Fresh out of the secure and isolated world of the Middle School. Portsmouth High did seem awesome to us. Quickly we realized that with the much welcomed freedom came a load of responsibilities and many lessons to learn. We learned how to survive among upperclassmen, how to cram for tests, how to skip classes down the path and. of course, how to enjoy ourselves to the maximum. As underclassmen, we began to find out what high school was all about and no matter where we spent our afterschool hours, in class meetings or parties, each of us designed our- selves lives which suited us best. Finally as upperclassmen, our junior and senior years were a great boost to our egos. We had power, a class ring to prove it and the money and the class participation to use it. Our junior year ended with an unforgettable Junior Prom and unforgettable final exams. Already, Senioritis had set in. At long last we were Seniors and we ruled. That was our Home- coming Week, our superlatives and our Senior pic- tures being taken. Our class gained a new sense of unity even though we individually planned and pre- pared for our future. A future we have looked for- ward to for a long time and a future that now stands at our doorstep. As a class, we have stayed true to rock ’n roll. We have suffered through a thousand tests and we might have even learned a little something from all those text books. We have learned about love, friendship, disappointment, and most importantly, about people. We are unique individuals bonded by the experiences we have shared together. Unity it Strength and we are proud to be the Class of 1981. McKenna 95 To the Class of 1981 As your counselor I am grateful to have the opportunity to express a message to you in the most potentially memorable and nostalgic work of literature - The Yearbook. You have completed a span of time in your life. There will be many times and challenges in your life to come. It is what you will gain as well as what you will do that will determine the outcome. As in the words of James M. Kelleher- The Game of Life is Wonderful and Awful Entirely too mysterious Entirely too strange When you think about it That is if you’re foolish enough to think about it I do occasionally It reminds me of a big game only I wasn't consulted About whether I wanted to play If I had my choice I’d play anyway But as it happened I just woke up and found myself in the game It’s your life. Make the most of it and with God’s Blessing. I’m sure you will. Joseph Narcizo Counselor % As your advisor and teacher. I want you to know that my pleasures in working with you for the past two years have been varied and worth- while. I have enjoyed seeing, as well as being part of. your early steps in intellectual growth and maturity, and I wish only the best for you. The best can be yours if somewhere in the corners of your life, you can retreat and contemplate your place in the whole of life by keeping in mind the concept of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Do not ignore yesterday it has given you the today from which you must provide a better tomorrow. In looking back to yesterday through the eyes of the artist or writer, take heed of what you find. Do not frown upon it nor envy it. Yesterday's pains and pleasures which have evolved into your today and your culture are now indistinguishable. Yet yesterday’s great men and women have survived and will always remain an important part of today and tomorrow. Such greats as Aristotle. Martin Luther. William Shakespeare. Madame Curie. George Washing- ton. Susan B. Anthony. Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther king. Jr., through their courage and unselfishness, stand immortal in a world which must recognize their contributions to mankind. Today is the foundation from which you build your world of adult decisions. As the todays pass, you must make decisions which will cast you in new roles, sometimes the leader, sometimes the follower, yet always the individual. Being a good leader demands the courage to face and come to terms with challenges of life being a good follower de- mands the courage of honest convictions. Both require the difficult task of being able to unashamedly reverse personal decision and at the same time remain true to your individual self. Keep your today involved with Faulkner’s old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths . .. love and honor and pity and compassion and sacrifice, and posterity will surely be the benefactor. Refuse to stand on the fringes of society or in the shadow of others and as the greats of yesterday and today, your life can become a force which will say to the world of tomorrow. I am and always will be. I have given my best for your, and in so doing, have given no less for myself . BARON and JOHN E. MULLIGAN Jnunul-BuDttui Wariungtofl Putami WASHINGTON - Clad in red. white and blue, the Portsmouth Hieh School band marched near the head of yester- day’s inaugural parade and treated Presi- dent Reagan to the Woodie Guthrie classic. “This Land Is Your land.” The two-mile procession from the Capitol to the new chief executive’s reviewing stand was the main event of a two-day whirl of activity for the 175 young musicians and their 20 or so chaperones and leaders. But the Portsmouth band was also one of the few chosen to perform at the concert held back at the Capitol grounds after the parade, as a mild Inaugural Day gave way to chilly Inaugural Night. From there, it was back on the road again for the nine-hour return trip to Rhode Island I think we did pretty good.’’ said Kevin Bryce, a 14-year-old freshman trombonist, after the long parade “It was kind of like any other parade, but there were a lot more people.” he said David Kenney, a 15-year-old sopho- more who also plays in the trombone section, said he did manage to sneak a peek at the new President as the band marched past. It was “sort of weird.’ he said, to see Ronald Reagan without the filter of a television screen As the band prepared for its last performance of a long and exciting day — at the West Front of the Capitol near dusk — Bandleader Raymond Ainsworth pronounced the parade a success and agreed that the band had done Rhode Island proud.
