Life is our contin- ually changing stage, a stage which does not permit us to have complete control over the script, but we must try to fulfill our lives in spite of our unpredictable roles. SEA. Do we come to school forgetting its true sig- nificant purpose? That purpose is to learn-not merely to socialize and have a good time; on the other hand, being with our friends and having a good time is important too, but we must maintain the proper perspective. Band Boosters proudly presented the Rodgers and Ham- merstein musical, Oklahoma, in the P.H.S. auditorium. The presentation was a tremen- dous success, mainly because it was a com- munity effort. Teachers, students, parents, and others in the community joined their musical and acting talents, their backstage skills, along with their energy to organize this stage production. The P.H.S. pit orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Ray Ainsworth, performed superbly. Renee Poirier and Steve Cory, along with everyone else involved, de- served the standing ovations showered on them by the enthusiastic audience. S.E.A. The play started with everyone scared - unsure of their lines. Yet we had an exciting ending that will forever be etched in the audience's minds as well as the actors’. E.W. As we end this play, we should not be sad because of its ending; we should look forward to the next play's be- ginning. E.W. We learned that the actors must work together to accomplish the impossible - we must try our best, and when we have, there is no room for doubt. As negotiations bogged down and finally ground to a halt, frustra- tion and anger were displayed by the teachers, their bargaining agents, townspeople, the school committee and their lawyer. It was at this point that the teachers voted to withhold their services until an equitable contract was offered and accepted. During the strike, all concerned maintained control of their emo- tions. After seven days of picketing the School Administration build- ing and the individual schools, the teachers asked for a preliminary hearing by the State Labor Relations Board. That evening, the school committee agreed to resume negotiations. By the following morning a contract proposal had been drawn up and presented to the teachers. At this point, teachers voted to accept the conditions of the contract and returned to their schools immediately for orientation. Schools opened the next day. Everyone began to rebuild the bond of confi- dence and trust that had deteriorated during the withholding of teachers' services. The delayed school year began orderly and ended successfully. ACT IV: FACULTY On the first day in the new school year, all the teachers in one school received the following note from their principal: Dear Teacher. I am a survivor of a concentration camp. My eyes saw what no man should witness: Gas chambers built by learned engineers. Children poisoned by educated physicians. Infants killed by trained nurses. Women and babies shot and burned by high school and college graduates. So, I am suspicious of education. My request is: Help your students become human. Your efforts must never produce learned monsters, skilled psychopaths, educated Fichmanns. Reading, writing, arithmetic are important only if they serve to make our children more humane. V- The class of 1980 is to be doubly congratulated first, for your achievements during your four years at Portsmouth High School; and second, for the responsible and mature manner in which you cooperated with your teachers and administrators. You have set a pace and a tone which will be felt at Portsmouth High School long after you have left. I offer you not only my best wishes, but my appreciation. In September of 1976 we entered Portsmouth High School as Freshmen, not knowing what to wait for or to look for We waited at bus stops, in lines, at classroom doors, and spent long hours on the path Some of us congregated at Resin Alley The warm meals that we hoped for were nothing but cold Stewart sandwiches Mrs Stanton was our advisor, helping us to finance our activities with numerous bake sales We were nervous - jumping at bells and watching out for seniors And my time was running wild in the dead-end streets. Our Sophomore year was not a whole lot different, though we had gained in status We were no longer at the bottom of the totem pole Mr Charest replaced Mrs Stanton as advisor, and car washes replaced bake sales. This is the year we selected our class emblem, the Mount Hope Bridge framed by four sailing ships We gathered daily in the auditorium for study and though we didn't run wild, it seemed like a dead end street The big dance of the year was the Sophomore semi-formal, St Elmo's Fire played Our social life advanced a notch as we began to attend parties more regularly So I turned myself to face man but I've never got a glimpse. As we entered our Junior year we were maturing quickly, but this was not always recognued Portsmouth High School was developing new. more restrictive rules. Though not always satisfied, we looked at the brighter side of things and pursued our studies We ran yet another successful car wash and sold innumerable pins and pops in order to finance Junior activities. Our ring luncheon was held at the Sheraton Islander, the Prom, featuring Fly-by-Night, was at the Castle Inn On Friday nights we often met with our friends at Sandy Point Later, some of us wandered off to Newport to have a good time. Everytime I thought I got it made It seemed the taste was not so sweet The school year began with a faculty strike Though we enjoyed the extended summer vacation, we were restless for school to begin so we could get on with the business of college applications and graduation. School regulations became more restrictive • we were deprived of the senior privileges we had hoped for Although we faced many disappointments, things never got out of hand The fall was dotted with activities during Homecoming, and the onset of winter brought the Christmas Ball, featuring the Atlantic Aces Numerous dances and the sale of carnations. T- shirts and refreshments at basketball games were sources of financial support When we came here we were children, as we leave we are more mature - more prepared to face the uncertainties that confront us.
