THE LEGEND OF PORTSMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL PORTSMOUTH, R.l. CLASS OF 1979 CONTENTS. . . FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS ADS and this is what it said. 'I live quietly and crack nuts. I gently steam with engines. But not without reflection on these times, don t worry if you have no answer ready to the lasting question. Hold out, meditate, listen Count happiness connatural to the mind more than truth is, and yet no happiness to exist without it. Walk with a cold pride utterly ahead wild attentive eyes head flicked by the rain-wet green needles of the pine, eyelashes that shine with tears and with thunders Love people Love entertains its own discrimination Have me in mind. I shall be watching You can return to me Now go! these modern times, my loving meditation. Don’t worry. Yours is no unii condition, your type of search and con : and construction, Explore Explore. Travel the world over. Yevtushenko I went, and I am still going.” WE, THE CLASS OF 1979, ARE. . . cy — Thankful to the faculty and administration for their LEADERSHIP and for serving as examples that we can emulate. Leaders have a significant role in creating the state of mind that is society. John Gardner 10 — Taking pride in the UNIQUENESS of our superlatives r — ENCOURAGING the underclassmen to be relentless in their future endeav- ors. Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops, sail over the canyons and up to the stars, and reach for the heavens and hope for the future, and all that we can be, not what we are. John Denver 2 13 — Grateful to PHS for providing activities that gave us a All that is human must retrograde if it does not advance. Edward Gibbon 14 — Grateful to Portsmouth High School for providing sports that taught us what fair play, competition, and STRIVING are all about. V In the classroom I am a scholar, Seeking, finding, asking Why. In the lab I am a scientist, Serious and inquisitive. On the sidelines I am a spectator, Enthusiastic and spirited. On the field I am an athlete, Tense and determined Unknown 15 16 The faculty of PHS have not been deterred by change. They will continue to guide the student body with courage, logic and perseverance. They will endure long after the class of 1979 has moved on in search of a newer educational oasis. 3 o o o o o o o o U. As seniors of the most memorable class at Portsmouth High School we look back on our four remarkable years together cause I must be traveling on now — there are too many places I've got to see Tyv - JH J - f [ w 'i On the morning of September 3,1975, 299 Portsmouth freshmen and 40 from Little Compton entered Portsmouth High School. Scared with the thoughts of getting stuffed in a locker and having to use the bathrooms, we ‘managed to make it as freshmen With the Bicentennial year in progress, we looked forward to a promising Sophomore year It I stay here with you . Well, we then became Sophomores and everything finaliy seemed to fall into place With the guidance of Mr Alfano and Mr Mansi, this proved to be a very successful and enjoyable year With 'Rocky at the theaters and theC !b| craze on we were also familiar with Kunta Kinteas we were amazed a id entertained by Roots. e first publicat on of our school newspaper Between the Lines, began our junior year The winter months brought the Blizzard of “78 and the newly formed Drama Club's preparations for Romeo and Juliet. Even though the = 1 song of this year was Stayin Alive,' we still remained the same with our anti-disco ways As our Junior year came to a close we realized, Well things just couldn't be the same. M i i7 y ' f - This is it. our senior year — Senior Privileges, 'Cause I'm as free as a bird now We finally made it. but it wasn t that easy' We struggled through College Applications and Financial Aid Forms not to mention test after test' With the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, we became victims of the Pop Rocks fad. Our school spirit amazed everyone and still grew greater than ever — and this bird you’ll never change Now leaving PHS. we are all going our separate ways None of us will ever forget the lessons we ve learned, the friendships we've shared and all of our memories of Portsmouth High School . Lord knows I can’t change. Shari Domingoes Bob Ferreira 9 91 The Class of 1979! A sweet and reminiscing phrase that shall be long remembered by one who has shared your experiences, sought your affection and shared your dreams and hopes for the future years I consider myself fortunate to have known each and every one of you and I wish you all the most substantive abundance of whatever hopes you have set for yourselves As you and I pause here at the threshold of a new door to the future, sigh no more for things that were or might have been. You have new horizons to behold in a wondrous world that has much to offer to those who plan and carry on fruitfully. I have complete faith in this Class of 1979. You have been warm and sensitive to people, responsible, hard-working and involved. Carry on as you have done here at Portsmouth High and I have every confidence that you will contrib- ute to that contribution which will make tomorrow s world warmer, friendlier, and a safer and peaceful place to live in. Nicholas A. Mansi Frank J. Alfano Time has passed quickly for us all. and I hope that you have learned as much from our endeavors as I. Our relationship has made it very enjoyable for me to become involved in the activities at PHS. We have seen that there is so much for us to experience both in and out of the classroom. Good things seldom last forever, and so we too must go our separate ways I only hope that the various paths we travel will somehow wind their way to a future meeting place as fulfilling as the one we are about to leave. Cherry Don DeSantis Don DeSantis — Editor THE NEWSPAPER OF PORTSMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL pure Wh; me gre ha , Conse JUNE 15, 1978 VOLUME I, NUMBER 6 PRICE 10?! 3Y POPULAR DEMAND (Better late than never) Romeo and Juliet by Jim Stanton Romeo and Juliet , snonsored by the class of 1979, was a smashing success. The Shakespearean classic was played at fHS from June 1-U to a very enthusiastic audience. Cynthia Thayer nortrayed Juliet. She acted the part of the ll-vear-old love-struck girl TREMENDOUSLY well. Interview PHS according to Mr. Sweeney by Jim Stanton ‘smashing success’ Steve Correia played the part of Romeo and had many young ladies in the audience off the edge of their seats. Friar Lawrence, portrayed by David Zinno, was one of the highlights of the evening. He was a bumbling, comical creature, with Just a dash of seriousness in him. Nurse, portrayed by Renee orier, was a dazzling miss who would break out in a sweat when she was kissed by a gentleman. Mercutio and Paris, portrayed by Mike Field and Chris AIvanas, played their roles ex- tremely well. They were Just great!!! Ybalt, played by Bruce Wilde, was a smash when he nd Mercutio had their duel. J. Stanton — editor. J Faria, D Oliveria. R Cranston. R Heilborn. L Grossi. M Hedgcorth. 8 Rader. M Bethune. Mr. O’Hara, made the statement. We are where we belong, when asked about the soccer team's promotion to Division IA. the best division in the state The team had captured two Suburban East crowns in the four years the team was in that smaller school league, so the promotion seemed justified, but fans were a bit apprehensive about the team’s chances against the very best soccer teams in the state Well, the Patriots got off to a good start and quickly settled into third place behind state pow- ers. East Providence and Bristol, while showing everyone they were capable of playing and beating the best Besides overpowering defending state champion. Barrington, twice, the Pats also knocked off 1 ranked East Providence. 2-1. in perhaps the biggest league victory of the season So after compiling an excellent 11-3-2 record in the top league under the able leadership of senior tri-captains. Steve Souza. Todd Chaplin, and Jim Melvin, the Patriots were now headed for the state championship playoffs It was to be two other seniors, namely, goalkeeper. John Carlone. and center forward. Mark Goulart. who led the team past first round opponent Mount St Charles. 1-0. in overtime In the state semi-finals. Gary Vieira’s defensive efforts and Steve Midas' midfield play were largely responsible for the 3-2 win over Burrillville. Now only Westerly was left to stand between Portsmouth and the state title. The Pats responded to the ultimate challenge by scooting by the surprising Bulldogs. 3-2, on some fine all-around team play and by scoring a heroic goal with just five minutes left to play by junior forward. Jim Burton Mr O'Hara and assistant coaches. Mr Sabourtn and Mr Thibault. can be justifiably proud of the team — our team. The soccer team made PHS sports history by giving the school its first state championship ever in any sport on the varsity level Congratulations are in order to the young men who worked and trained so hard to realize their dream — what every high school athlete dreams of — a State Championship 4 152 Top: Mr O'Hara (Coach).
