- The Class Of 1969 Presents The We, the class of mbeteen hundred and sixty-nine, find ourselves upon tftevgoorstep of a turbulent and challenging world. Ou 'wprld . . . inherited from other generations, an inheritance which we must soon take up as a challenge which we will continue to meet for the rest of our lives. For it is our generation .who must now make our way into the world to .ourselves all that we are able, striving to attai deals, to accomplish that which must be done to n fcke this world as it should be — understanding and £aqeful. And we will do this, for each member of this as a part of himself to give — whether il small, each of us will leave a significant contribution which will remain as a memorial to our generation. We will dedicate ourselves to bettering our world and to easing the pain and sorrow, for we, in turn, will pass it on to the next generation as their inheritance. But without preparation, without a guiding force to lead us, we would be unable to step further, much less to reach out and meet such a challenge, and it has been here in Portsmouth High School that we have received the knowledge so important to us, here that we have had instilled in us the qualities which will strengthen us all our lives. The four years we have spent in this school have been years which have molded us into the people we are finer wo! TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Guidance Faculty Senior Section Activities Underclassmen Sports Advertisements DEDICATION We, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty- nine, wish to thank Mr. Peter O'Hara for the time and support he has devoted to us for the past three years. As our advisor Mr. O’Hara has stood by us in all our endeavors and has always been on hand to give guidance and assistance. He has provided the enthusiasm which is so necessary in maintaining an active class. Always ready with ideas for class functions and suggestions for initiating projects, Mr. O'Hara has given much of his time, both in school and outside. He has been an active participant in all which our class has done. But most important, he has advised us without stepping in and taking over — rather he has let us make our own decisions and plans, then given us his full support and confidence. Therefore, in appreciation of his continual support and guidance, the Class of 1969 dedicates this yearbook to our advisor, Mr. Peter O’Hara. 6 IN APPRECIATION We, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-nine, express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Joseph Narcizo for the time and concern he has given us for four years. As our counselor, he has never failed to take a sincere interest in our class as a whole, and more important, in each of us individually. He has always been ready to listen to our problems, and to aid us in solving them, and we have never been reluctant to seek him out. For the past four years, he has been a guiding light in an often uncertain world, always willing to show us the way. He has advised us from our freshman days of adjusting to high school, through schedules and exams, all the way to the momentous task of college applications and acceptance. And it is for this that we thank him so deeply, we also thank him for the countless little things which he has done, and the times in which he has gone out of his way for us. And above all, we thank him for caring so deeply. 7 MR. ROLAND SHAPPY Superintendent Of Schools You have experienced the best education the community has been able to provide in your years at Portsmouth High School. In receiving this training in the arts and sciences, you have also received a foundation for your future life in the community and society. Along with the members of the classes which have preceded you. you have a responsibility to render service and to return to society some of that which it so generously gave you. Through your personal perseverance and success, you will make your own contributions to the community in which you live. May I wish you every success in the future and assure you of our interest in all you may accomplish. 8 Principal During your years at Portsmouth High School we have tried to instill in you a thirst for knowledge and a desire for self-improvement. Since, it is said, The future belongs to the youth, it seems important that the future of the world rests with a desire to improve plus the knowledge needed to improve. No longer will you be able to blame “the system since you are the system. No longer will you be able to say I don’t like it”, “It is wrong”, “Why don’t they — . You are “they”. It has been a pleasure knowing the Senior Class. It is with confidence that I look at the members of the class of 1969 helping to shape the future of the world. MR. WILLIAM CARBERRY Vice Principal Message to Class of 1969 An honest man is the noblest work of God” (Alexander Pope) A teacher today has but to listen to the voices of students to discover an interesting antinomy. Young people today are in an earnest quest of identity and at the same time they sense a strong need for community or togetherness. If your search of self and usefulness to others is to be a contribution, then the search must be an honest one. You should adjust to the world as it is and work diligently and peacefully to change it for everyone’s benefit. You can do this by telling the truth and making it a matter of conscience. You will be at ease. 9 MR JOSEPH SOUSA Guidance Mr. Louis Gelsomino Director of Guidance The guidance department of Portsmouth High School is constantly in motion, whether to reas- sure a frightened seventh grader, or to aid a senior in planning his future. The counselors and the department have devoted themselves en- tirely to the welfare of the students. Beginning with the seventh grade, each class is guided through its initiation to the school, curriculum and scheduling problems, college boards, and finally college and job acceptance. The counse- lors are always on hand to listen to a student's problems and questions, whether they concern his home or school. Our guidance department works long and hard to help all the students in as many ways as possible. The students are on their own. with the art teachers guiding them into the right paths. Students learn various methods used by other artists, and then try their own. By using color, shape, and imagination they demonstrate their creativity. Whatever the result is, it's the students own work and their own way of expression. Mr. Richard Pacheco Mr. Raymond Ainsworth Music Department The Music Department, through its general music program, cultivates an interest and an appreciation of music. This is a major factor in the development of cultural standards in the students. These aims are realized through continual study of grammar and structure, reading and discussion of essays, speeches, short stories, and novels by authors from a wide variety of countries and times, analysis of modern and traditional poetry, and a study of drama, which is supplemented by the Project Discovery Program. Through this varied and intensive program of study, the student emerges with a deep appreciation of literature and the ability to communicate expressively. He has excelled on the football field and as a senior was the co-captain of our undefeated team. His athletic ability was not limited to football alone but he also played basketball very well. Drew has kept many a spectator in awe at his outstanding ability in both of these fields. His more serious side is exhibited in his membership in the National Honor Society. Drew is also active in many activities including the Letterman’s Club and the Yearbook Staff. He has worked very hard throughout his high school years and we are sure he will continue to do well. PATRICIA BIGELOW Patricia Bigelow, better known as Tish , has been one of the most active members of the class of '‘69”. Considered the most school spirited girl in the class, she appeared at our football and basketball games as a cheerleader and a member of our marching band. She played intramural sports since her freshman year. Tish was also on our powder puff football team in her senior year. All this has not kept her from mamtaining a high scholastic record. Despite involvement in extracurricular activities she is also a member of the National Honor Society. In her junior and senior years she was the vice president of the class, and she helped on the staff of the yearbook in her last year. Best wishes are extended to Pat for the future. 62 FRANCIE CHRISTENSEN This girl has a pleasant smile, warm greetings, intelligence, and plenty of school spirit. As the majorette captain, Francie devoted much time to plan the practices to see a good drill come forth. The bookstore is her favorite morning pastime. Student Council has benefited greatly from this girl's original ideas and support. Francie has had an interest in the class since she entered the school in the seventh grade. The National Honor Society also claims this charming young lady as a member. She is a very determined powder puff football player as well as an active participant in other sports. We will always remember Francie with thoughts of gratitude and we wish her success. CYNTHIA LEE CRAWFORD ••Successful is the best word which describes Cindy’s high school years. Throughout these past years she has been a top honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. Cindy has also been a very active participant in class projects. She served as treasurer of the class as a sophomore and has been a reliable member of the Executive Board every year. As a junior and senior, Cindy has served on the Student Council and has been a member of the Guiding Lights. In her last year, Cindy has put forth many of her efforts as chairman of the School Spirit Committee and a Legend staff member. An important part of Cindy’s extracurricular activities has been the science seminars at U.R.I. Cindy won the Chemistry Merit Award in her Junior year. We are grateful to Cindy for being such a hard worker for the class. We know that the success she has already attained will be enriched in every year to come. 63 MICHAEL DIMATTEO DEBORAH DUGAN Debbie has indeed proven herself as one of the most outstanding seniors in our class. She has engaged herself in several activities throughout the past four years. Debbie has been an active member of the Modern Dance Club since her sophomore year and served as secretary of the club in her junior year. Her intelligence has gained her recognition in the National 'Honor Society throughout her high school years. She has been a strong supporter of school activities and has worked on various committees helping the class strive to reach its ultimate goals, including her hard work on the yearbook. As one of the tri captains of the cheerleading squad, she livened the crowd’s spirit in cheering our teams to victory. Success and happiness in the future are extended to Debbie. Ever since Mike first came to Portsmouth High, he has worked extremely hard to achieve success for the class of 1969. Through the student exchange program, we at Portsmouth have benefited greatly and learned much about the cus- toms and ways of life in other countries. Guiding Lights The Guiding Lights was formed to act as a guide to tours and other activities which involve people who are unfamiliar with the school. Pioneer Staff This year, the issues of the Pioneer, Portsmouth's school newspaper, were widely read and said to be the best yet. The success of the paper was due to the selfless devotion of the staff, the student body, and the advisor, Mr. Velleca. This year's editors and report- ers worked hard and despite pressing deadlines managed to make every article provoca- tive, informative, or amusing. The result: a newspaper P.H.S. is proud to call her own. Literary Journal This marks the second year of the publication of “Some Fan- tastic Beast’’, the school’s literary journal. The staff of the journal, under the guidance of Mr. Velleca, works endlessly and frantically to meet dead- lines and to unearth the cre- ative talents which abound here. The literary journal is a collection of poetry, short sto- ries, and corresponding pho- tography, which makes known the creative abilities of talented students. Young Rhode Islanders The Young Rhode Island a section of the Saturday eve- ning edition of the Providence Journal, is devoted to high schools around the state. Sakonnet Times Representative For more than a year, the Sakonnet Times has been a familiar and important source of information to the residents of Portsmouth and the sur- rounding communities. The Times has not neglected to recognize P.H.S. as an impor- tant center of activity in the town. The Patriots surged to their first Class-C championship in unbeaten style. In league play, they racked up 255 points to only 26 for their opponents. After winning nine straight games, the team bowed only to Middletown in a hard fought battle. The awesome power of the team became obvious after our first Round-Robin victory. Displaying a well-balanced offense, as well as a rugged defense, every Saturday became a highlight. The tremendous spirit and extreme dedication also helped the team to field one of the strongest teams in the state. The members of this year’s team should all be proud of their outstanding contribution to the school and to the development of sports in Portsmouth. 112 Dough Stone Co-captain Drew Bickel Co-captain Skip Winter Norm Franklin Vance Cowart Brad Therrien Ronnie Raposa Carl Sell Richard Drake S E N I 0 R S 1 9 6 9 113 Richard Rand Bruce Singleton Photo by Lee Romero 114 Photos by Staff Carroll Photos by Staff Carroll and Lee Romero 115 Varsity Scores De La Salle OPP 7 PHS 13 (Round Robin) Scituate 7 33 N. A strong, young team, the Patriots worked hard and proved themselves to be fierce competitors. They won a number of games and many of the losses were by close scores. Coach Vierra, who has fielded very suc- cessful teams in the past, can look forward to next season when he will have better than half his players returning. We hope he can bring a championship home. 122 123 124 125 126 Basketball First row: D. Bickel, S. Winter, J. Reed, M. Lyons, S. Condon, Second row: Coach Akucewich, P. Bechtel. R. Raposa, G. Pritchard, S. Horan, B. Ibbotson, M. Jones. The 1968-1969 basketball team continued what has proven to be “the year of the Patriot.” They provided many exciting moments of basketball thrills on the hardwood. The compliment of height and hustle proved hard for opposing teams to handle. The shooting and rebounding came around slowly but developed, and the team became one of the best in class C . With only four seniors on the present squad, the talented and experienced underclassmen should give Portsmouth a good team for the next few years. The desire displayed by these boys has given the town of Portsmouth a spirit equaled in few places. Congratulations to Coach Akucewich and the Team! 127 D. Bickel. Coach Akucewich. M.
