patriots Portsmouth Portsmouth High School has pro- vided a well-rounded program of academic subjects, a variety of opportunities in extracurricular ac- tivities, an introduction to all phases of arts and sciences, and a sturdy foundation on which to build a future career. dedication introduction administration legend” staff faculty activities 2 4 sports 6 seniors 17 hall of fame 20 underclassmen 21 senior directory 45 patrons 3 dedica In sincere appreciation for the guidance and service which they have given us, we, The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty Seven, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Louis Sousa and Mr. Leo Gaudette. For the past four years Mr. Sou- sa has been an energetic, hard- working advisor to our class. He has contributed to the fullest of his ability to the success of all our endeavors. We have been led by his firm yet gentle hand through the perils of Hillbilly Night, Class Plays, and School Dances, and to the peace and tranquility of our June gradua- tion. mr. louis sousa class advisor 4 tion mr. leo gaudette yearbook advisor Patience and forebearance play an important role in Mr. Gau- dette's everyday activities. At times, we. the staff of “The Leg- end,” have tried these charac- teristics by obstacles we some- times placed in the path and progress of the yearbook, but he never waved. Through his creativity and guidance, he has helped to make our high school legend a proud and rewarding one. And so we dedicate the 1967 Legend to these two men, who have, with talent and toil, made it possible. 5 scholastic attainments are identified by the increase of college preparatory classes, new teaching approaches, honor society memberships, and by the excellence of our students' records in competitive academic programs. 6 mental cultivation, effective application, physical developments, social awareness, and constructive enthusiasm within curricular and extracurricular activities depict our student leadership 8 awareness of the need for practical training in necessary and applicable skills enhance the students’ preparation for future and immediate pursuits. ii learning to get along with people, establishing new acquaintanceships, and developing a sense of responsibility, respect, and compassion for others have promoted invaluable friendships 14 and competition indispensible elements necessary for success in athletic as well as scholastic events— have aroused in students the willingness to declare with pride, i attend Portsmouth high school.” 15 Hi! I come from the city of Mar del Plata, Argen- tina. I attended and was later graduated from Stella Maris School, and have qualified to be an elementary school teacher. Several delegates from A.F.S. came to our school and reported on the scholarship offered. Approximately 100 boys and girls registered from this program from the entire city. We took a written exam in general culture and an oral exam on politics, religion, and racial segrega- tion. Only 30 were excepted, I amongst them. There were several interviews with our families, teachers, and friends, all to acquaint A.F.S. with us. Afterwards, this information was sent to New York, where we were matched with an ap- propriate family. Finally, only six were chosen as delegates based on personality, scholarship and character. communications abroad I am very happy to be a student at Portsmouth High School this year. The entire student body and faculty has helped to make my stay a mem- orable and rewarding one. I know I will never forget this year. Many thanks. Mirta 16 superintendent of schools mr. roland shappy Beginning to build its traditions upon a more sound foundation, the Class of 1967 approaches the moment of graduation with the knowledge that it has con- tributed its share to Portsmouth High School. As the second graduating class, it has profited from the experiences of its predecessor. The Senior Class always has the responsibility for generating school spirit, initia- tive and drive. As Seniors, the present class has recognized and reaffirmed that responsibility. Your responsibility does not cease upon your graduation. If the school has done a creditable job, your personal success and your contribution to the society in which you live, will reflect the thoroughness of your preparation of life. May I wish you every success and welcome you back to Portsmouth High School whenever you can return to us. You will not be forgotten. 17 I also ask you to retain through the years your Enthusiasm for a life of freshness, vigor, and imagination. Have the courage to keep your ideals before you as unfailing goals, because to forget them would be to lose all. adminis Members of the Class of 1967, I ask you to re- member that your teachers have linked a past of striving and accomplishments to a future of opportunity and challenge. You are the living products of their concern; the hopeful focus of their faith in man's ability to learn from his heri- tage of failure and success. Their guidance and their teaching are invaluable tools in facing the awesome future. Best wishes and Godspeed. Hard work has made you the senior members of Portsmouth High School. Following gradua- tion you will lose this senior status and only by hard work can it be re-established in your chosen endeavor. If, while at- tending Portsmouth High, you learned that work and success are proportionate, your future happiness will be insured. May the world bless you with op- portunities, and may you have the wisdom to see and grasp them. 18 mr. william carberry vice principal tration mr. louis gelsomino director of guidance Guidance is continuing process throughout the school career of a pupil. Individuals are different, develop by different paths and rates to maturity, are worthwhile in their own rights, and are deserving of professional help in achieving their development. The central service of the guidance program— counseling—is a kind of helping relationship in which two people communicate about plans, de- cisions. feelings and attitudes. Counselors provide help in assisting students to deal with personal, educational, and vocational problems. The impact of counseling is intended to increase the individual’s capacity for self- direction. mrs. rose ayres assistant director of guidance and dean of women 19 legend staff editor janet kosch advisor mr. gaudette staff Activities—Beth Russell Advertisements—Dave Boocock George Chase Faculty—Karen Christensen Hall of Fame—Janet Boocock Bev Mosher Head Typist—Pam Readinger Photographer—Arthur Mendonca Senior Section—Pat Mederios Sports—Bob Driscoll Underclassmen—Rose Fitzsimmons Nan Correia Editor-in-training—Sue Platt 20 22 Mr. Richard Heisler—Department Head business department 23 Mrs. Judith Claire Mr. Joseph Lagarto Mrs. Anne Lima Miss Kathleen Keane 24 Mrs. Janice Sippen 25 26 Miss Diane McFarland Mrs. Agnes Acheson Miss Emilia D'Andrea Mr. Robert Velleca Miss Michele Hamel Miss Margaret Kanauss Mrs. Elizabeth Maice home Mrs. Jean Flood 28 Mr. William McGreavy-Department Head 29 Mr. George McGaw 30 Mr. Alfred Ramos language department Mr. Richard Thibault Mr. Val Moreau—Department Head 31 Mrs. Diane Patterson 32 Mr. Arthur Ferreira music department Mr. Raymond Ainsworth Department Head Mr. Peter Kekligian 34 Mrs. Elizabeth Wilkey Department Head art department Mr. Leo Gaudette 35 36 Mr. Anthony DaPonte 37 Mr. Raymond Sabourin Mr. Alfred Lombardi Laboratory Science—Italian Style? 38 Mr. Louis Sousa Mr. Robert Pimentel 39 Mr. Victor St. Laurent 40 Mr. J. The Executive Board has truly learned the meaning of team work, but without the guidance of Mr. Louis Sousa, the job would have never been completed. 47 legend staff There were deadlines to meet, pictures to take and layouts to be made, but the Yearbook Staff never gave up the hard work. Through the drive of their advisor, Mr. Gaudette, the difficult task has ended of putting together the complex legend'' of our high school years at Portsmouth High School. 48 national honor society Row 1: W. With five issues per year they are kept quite busy and are constantly, and continually, working against the clock. Our school paper is extended to all members of the student body and faculty to keep up on the affairs of Portsmouth High. young rhode islander Young Rhode Islander Throughout the school period, Beth Russell has served as author of the Ports- mouth High column for the Young Rhode Island section of the Providence Jour- nal. This column enables students throughout the state to learn about the activi- ties, programs and ideas of schools besides their own. 52 future teachers Future Teachers Club For anyone interested in a career in teaching, the Future Teachers Club provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the profession as a whole or some specialized aspect of it. Programs are arranged and presented with the purpose of acquainting the students with the various opportunities and necessary re- quirements in the field of education. future nurses Future Nurses Association The nursing profession is one which requires long hours, constant awareness, skill, and above all patience. Our dance band provides the school and com- munity with the popular music of the day. Be sides playing at concerts and assemblies, the dance band has also played for various func- tions outside of the school. It is always a delight to hear them play, and the school is certainly grateful for all the time and effort shown. drum major The band would not be fully equipped without its drum major, Paul Trout, as he sets the pace for various drills and formations. The P.H.S. majorettes, in their bright red, white, and blue uniforms, are always a welcome sight for their performance of various drills and routines for football game§, assemblies, and, of course, marching in parades. majorettes C. As well as serving energetically and faithfully on various committees, Karen will be remembered for her participation in the three class plays, Cheaper by the Dozen,” Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” and Wuthering Heights. In her Junior year Karen also served on the Pioneer” staff. As a Senior, she was Secretary of the Student Council, became a member of the American Field Service Organization, and she prepared the faculty section of the Legend.” An en- thusiastic person, Karen has all the qualities which have made her a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years. Schol- arship, leadership, character, and service. With these qualities, Karen will surely succeed. Good Luck! Dave Boocock “Chief . . . intelligence . . . Harry Dave Boocock's musical talents range from the tuba in the marching and concert bands, to the bass viol in the dance band and orchestra. He displayed great acting ability in Cheaper by the Dozen,” Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” and in Shock of His Life. His more serious nature is exhibited by his diligence as President of the National Honor Society. As a Junior, Dave par- ticipated in the U.R.I. Saturday seminars attend- ing engineering classes. In his Sophomore year, he won the Alliance Francais Award for ex- cellence in French. He will be long remembered for his original presidential campaign: but more especially his dedicated service as a co-business manager of the Legend, which testifies to the loyalty and effervescence that won him so many friends. Best Wishes Dave. Edward Ellis Enthusiastic ... “Little Teddy Bear ... energetic 'Shy' (though sometimes we wonder!), Ted Ellis is a well-rounded sports enthusiast with inter ests ranging from football to golf. On the foot- ball field, co-captain Ted played defensive safety and offensive fullback. On the basketball court and on the baseball diamond, he plays a hard game. He has been on various school teams throughout his high school years—Varsity foot- ball, Junior Varsity basketball and Varsity bas- ketball. His boundless energy and determina- tion have captivated breathless crowds awaiting decisive victory. He is also on the school's golf team; he was the New England Junior Cham- pion in 1963, and has participated in state com- petitions. He was chosen Mr. School Spirit of Homeroom C l in his Junior year. Ted has also served on the class play committees and has supported many school functions. With Ted's drive and determination, the Class of '67 is sure he will succeed. Good Luck Ted! Nan Correia Big Nan” . . . Big Smile . . . W.W. His recognized popularity won him the title, Mr. School Spirit for two consecutive years. His abili- ty on the basketball court placed him on the Varsity team. As a football hero, John brought honor to P.H.S. when he was chosen the first guard from Portsmouth ever to play for the Eastern Division and All County Team. John has also worked hard for the achieved success of various hootenannies and class plays. Good Luck John! Fredda Field Short, dark curls . . . shy . . . cute Fredda Field's bashfulness has not kept her from being one of the most active students in the Class of '67. Fredda played the leading roles, in Cheaper by the Dozen and in Our Hearts Were Young and Gay . Fredda has retained office as treasurer of the class of '67 for three consecutive years. Suc- cess and happiness are extended to her for the future. ■ James Harrington Orator . . . amiable . . . suave Although Jim Harrington first entered P.H.S. in his Senior year, he quickly became a very active member of the student body. His diligent cam- paigning and friendliness won him the support of the Senior Class at election time. Because of his effective campaign he was elected President of the Class of '67. His new and promising ideas have taken shape through the efforts of the Senior Class executive board. Jim has also been chosen as the student delegate for the American Legion Oratorical contest. Jim, who has had previous acting experience, has taken the leading role in the Class play, Wuthering Heights. In November of 1966, she had the honor of being selected as Portsmouth's first Homecoming Queen. Janet will always be remembered by Portsmouth’s student body as the editor of “The Legend for which she has devoted many hours of diligent work. Best Wishes for a rewarding future.
