This heing our lirst voyage. one into an unknown territory on a ship as yet unexplored hy us, we were a little uncertain ofthe location of our quarters, These found and goods disposed of. we ventured out to see what the ship was like. It took us several days to hecome really acquainted with her. hut it would have taken longer without the guidance and help of some shipmates who had traveled thus hefore, Ocroinza. 1919 Cheerful we were as a crew, and husily and happily the days of our voyage sped hy until there came the time for the casting of lots. to choose those who should lead us and preside over our fortunes. The choice fell upon the following: President ....................,.... . joseph Clahrera Vice-President . . . Evelyn Petrillo Secretary .... ..... Q Fail Schiot Treasurer ...........i.........i............. Thomas Sullivan From the elders ahoard. Captains Plwilhrick and Alvord were detailed hy the Master Mar- iner to counsel us and to warn. Ahout this same time were prenfrrerl games of strength and skill, to he held on hoard and with those challenging our seamen ct 'sorts of call. To cheer on our gallant youths and maid- ens there were chosen three from our numher, Dwrothv Crowley, Mary Doyle. and Alherta Little- lie'd. and well did they perform their task. All hearts were gladdened hy the games. Then approached that season of the vear when spirits are said to he at large and to hold revelry. and some appropriate celehrrition seemed in order. lt was decided to give over an evening to dancing on the deck. This we called a Sophomore Hon. Our own hand of musicians made melodv. as all turned out for this happy occasion in hest array. Several weeks passed hy while night and day did the ship steadily cleave her way through the waves. and calm and peaceful were the souls on hoard. Novisminaa. 1919 As on land there is law. so too. there is a lilw of the sea. All signs and portents pointed to successful contending in this sport. JANUARY By vote of all crew members and our leaders now was given to janet Curran the Good Citizenship Award by the Ranger Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, a very great honor. FLQBRUARY As had been foreseen earlier, in the great Pan-New Hampshire Festival of Basketball five of our senior crewmen, Dick Romagnoli. Bob Wfatson, Charles Mclnnis, Dick Rutherford, and joe Lazzara, played a decisive part in the winning of the laurel as state champions. ATARCH - A second great honor that came to our ship gladdened our hearts as, participating in the State Winter Track Meet at the port of Exeter, New Hampshire, three of our crewmen-Bob Arsenault. Bill jacobsmeyer, and Dick Spaulding-helped Portsmouth to win the day. After toiling long for many days, there began to be expressed a desire to make merry, and all joined in planning a Spring Hop for which music should be played by the .lohn Howe Orches- tra. Certain of our crewmen made our craft beautiful with decorations suitable to the season. APRIL There was in our midst one crew member. the sweetness of whose music made on her vio- lin could be compared favorably with that drawn by Orpheus from his lyre. As we lingered in the port of Rochester. New Hampshire. she, 'loan Richard, had the honor of being selected concert-mistress of the All-State Orchestra in the All-State Music Festival held there. As there were those amongst us talented in music. so there was one on whom the Muses had bestowed an especial gift. and she excelled in the making of verses.
