BLISS MARRINEIQ To THE MEMBERS or THE CLASS OF 1951: 1 You are now to enter upon a new phase in your life's journey. It may seem to you that the future outlook is rather dark and uncertain. However, a glance through the pages of his- tory shows that people of many periods have experienced the same feelings, but they pressed forward with high hopes for a better day, gave their best to the tasks at hand, and practiced a great faith in a better future. As a consequence, our world today, with all its faults, offers greater opportunities for serv- ice to mankind and for personal growth than we have ever known. Today as never before we need men and women with personal integrity, loyalty, high character, and religious fervor to lead us forward to greater achievements. If you will accept this challenge you will make the greatest contribution toward a better world and you will experience the personal satisfaction of living a useful and productive life. It is my hope that you will use your education toward becoming worthwhile citizens as well as sources of joy to those who have sacrificed for you. I wish to extend to you my congratulations on completing the requirements necessary for graduation with my very best wishes for your future success. Sincerely, BLISS MARRINER. Princijml. TURNS was ONE AND - ' 'W 5 x THE CLASS OF 1951 A Comedy-Drama in Three Acts The Scene: A building near the center of the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The plot: ACT I. SEPTEMBER, 19148, TO JUNE, 1949 The opening scene finds the entire cast, a frightened group of sophomores, entering the portals of the Portsmouth High School. The members of the group look left and right along the corridors which seem to stretch endlessly before them, then reluctantly separate to find their classrooms. All the while they are conscious of being watched, with amused glances, by a su- perior group made up of juniors and seniors. Classrooms found, they relax briefly as assignments are given out, then settle down to the serious business of adjustment to their new surroundings. Class oflicers are chosen: presi- dent, Bernard McCabe, vice president, Dorothy Breton, secretary, Sheila O'Donnellg treasurer, Leonard Daigle. Our able and patient advisers are Miss Grifhn and Miss Sanders. Witli their help, the sophomores soon get into the swing of things. Color and excitement are provided by club activities and sports in which the boys join and in which some, even as sophomores, gain distinction. A few of the girls win coveted po- sitions as cheerleaders, these are Beverly Foss, joan Mills, Marilyn Lee and Dorothy Anderson. Ihr: cf Ifiglft A belated Hallowe'en party is given by the juniors and seniors who are found to be pretty nice people after all. Mr. Phillips is cast as master of ceremonies and everyone has a wonderful time. Before we realize it june has crept up on us and we look forward eagerly to a long vaca- tion. At graduation, the spotlight falls on Nancy Nelson who wins a Haven Medal for out- standing scholastic ability. We are now a more confident group and have come to enjoy Portsmouth High School. The curtain falls on the first act. ACT II. SEPTEMBER, 1949 TO JUNE, 1950 As the curtain rises on the second act the cast with a few minor changes again moves upon the stage. The corridors no longer seem endless and classrooms are found with ease. We move now with assurance and smile tolerantly in our turn at the sophomores but remem- bering our bewilderment of the year before, we pause here and there to lend a helping hand. Now at last supers are promoted to bit parts, and some become featured players, while a few become stars. Chosen leaders this year are president, William Burt, vice president, Sheila O'Donnellg secretary, Shirleyanne Rondeau, and treasurer, Peter Massaro. Clubs are again chosen carefully and a few juniors are elevated to important ofhces in them. Many boys become noted for their sports ability and several change their usual cos- tumes for maroon sweaters and jackets with the white letter P. Basketball holds the center of the stage as usual in the winter months as Portsmouth adds another State trophy to its col- lection. juniors Babula, Splaine and Coussoule are outstanding members of the team, Coussoule being one of the few juniors ever to win a place on All State. Class rings are selected after great deliberation. The minstrel show, an annual event, is sparked by junior talent which accounts in part for its great success. The junior play, What A Life, is given in April, starring Beverly Petrillo, Kennard Pal- frey, Gordon Aston, Elaine Goodreau, Richard Betz, and Patricia Connors. Members of the class pledged to National Honor Society are Nancy Nelson, Helen O'Connor, Ruth Blakeney, Charles Davidson, Lorraine Cameron, Priscilla Rand, Suzanne Bachelder, Shirleyanne Rondeau, Sylvia jones, Irvin Taube and Sheila O'Donnell. Again the year flies bv all too fast, but we are looking forward to raising the curtain on the last act when we shall be at last the sophisticated seniors. ACT III. SEPTEMBER, 1950, TO JUNE, 1951 The curtain rises and time seems to fly with all kinds of activities and the bustling excite- ment of our coming graduation. Along with the honor of being seniors there is a great deal Page Nine of work to be done with the added responsibility of leadership in Student Council, school pa- per, yearbook, clubs, and sports. With all the hubbub of measuring for caps and gowns, raising much needed funds by means of dances and plays, and attending school events and games, we still find time to go to school. The Clipper Review plays to packed houses both nights and the idea, although com- pletely different, is approved and considered better than ever! The senior play, Double or Nothing, is a huge success. Shirleyanne Rondeau is chosen as our D. A. R. representative and Marilyn Lee wins the American Legion award. The boys continue to be outstanding in sports winning honors for the school in football, track and baseball, but especially in basketball with still another state championship. Three players from the senior class win places on the All State team: Paul Babula, Loukas Coussoule, and Arthur Splaine. Class officers this year are: president, Arthur Splaineg vice president, Helen O'Connorg treasurer, Mose Belluccig secretary, Sheila O'Donnell, and business manager, Albert Boyan. A backward glance through the previous acts finds our group standing again on the threshold and again about to separate. This time it is not to hnd our homerooms, but to go cut into a new life, vowing never to forget the wonderful years at Portsmouth High School. l a,2e Teil PQ? Around the Thanksgiving holidays the class members circulated petitions for a junior prom. january l3 was chosen as the date. This was the Hrst junior prom in many years and the cooperation of all concerned was rewarded by a huge success. The juniors are now displaying their class rings which arrived early in March. junior boys have been outstanding in all sports, many winning letters in football, track and basketball. Dick Romagnoli won a place on the All State basketball team. Georgine Baird, Mary Lou Bierweiler, Jacqueline Black, janet Curran, Marguerite Downing, Charlene Hjort, William Jacobsmeyer, Priscilla Palmer, Gail Schiot, Anna Soule, and Thomas Sullivan were elected to the National Honor Society. The cast of the junior play is rehearsing now. The play chosen is a modern melo- drama entitled The Curse of an Aching Heartf, Mr. Leonard Barnes is director. Our advisers this year have been Miss Evelyn Blankenberg and Mrs. Nona Philbrick. Great credit is due them in making our year a happy and successful one. The first few days were like being in an unknown world, even though our teachers and the upperclassmen tried to be kind and helpful. When everyone was settled down to studying we held class elections. The ones cho- sen to lead our class were, Frank Hundley, president, Helen Coussoule, vice president, Rich- ard Lamontagne, treasurer, and Anna Cruz, secretary. Our class adviser is Miss Julia Stulb and she has been very helpful. In October, the juniors and seniors gave a Hallowe'en dance to welcome us into the school. There was excellent music by the high school orchestra and plenty of refreshments for all. All who attended had a wonderful time. Many of our boys have participated in sports at P. H. S. Several have earned letters and we are proud of them. The sophomores have contributed much to the school in other ways by taking part in club activities, especially in music, by serving on the Student Council, and by generally trying to be good citizens in the school community. Now another school year is coming to an end. All of the happiness and sorrows that have taken place in our first year here must be tucked away in our memories for all the years to come. We are looking forward eagerly to next year when we come back as juniors. Page Forly-eight Helen Coussoulc, vice presidcntg Frank Hundley, presidentg Richard I-1iMiDI1Illj.IIIC, treasurer. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is comprised of senior and junior students who are cho- sen by the faculty on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, service, and character. This year our chapter has undertaken a project which it found very successful during the last war. The plan is to send our school newspaper to servicemen and women who were formerly Portsmouth High School students, regardless of where they are stationed. We hope in this way to let them know we have not forgotten them. We are also writing to them occas- ionally, telling them the latest news of the city and school. Ofhcers presiding at the first induction of new members in October consisted of Charles Davidson, president, Nancy Nelson, vice president, Sylvia Jones, secretary, Irvin Taube, treasurer. The club is under the direction of Mr. Leonard B. Barnes, with the assist- ance of Mr. Donald Morrison, our cadet teacher from U. N. H. The aim of the club is to promote all phases of dramatics from acting to make-up and to give the members an awareness of stage presence. The club was active during American Education Week in November, when a radio pro- gram was presented over WHEB which told about some of the many extra-curricular activities offered in this school. The club also presented a special Thanksgiving assembly and pre- sented a one-act play just before Christmas. Plans are now under way for another one-act play to be presented sometime in the near future. The project for this year is to try to raise some money to buy some sound effects records which may be used in future dramatic produc- tions. The play is set in a small Mexican village. The time is the present. joan Kadlec plays the part of Berta, a fiery Mexican beauty, who is very angry over the fact that Fidel, played by Ed Duffy, has been rolling the eye at Celestina, the local big shot's daughter, played by Marjorie Williams. Beverly Petrillo plays the part of Tonia, who is dismayed by all the commotion. The events include a real knock down and drag out fight between Celestina and Salome, played by Priscilla Palmer. Joan Louther is the prompter. At the state festival held in Durham, St. Josephs High of Manchester and Portsmouth High School were both rated excellent, These schools will represent the state of New Hamp- shire at the New England Festival held at Warwick, Rhode Island, on April 28. Those who saw the performance of our actors at Durham entertain high hopes for even greater honors for our school. Page Fifty-eight Fin! Roux' D. Fleischman, B. Teague, L. Klein, J. Richard, D. This very active club, consisting of seventy-two juniors and seniors, is one of the largest in the school. The three purposes of the club are to promote interest in the school and its activities, to encourage friendliness among the students, and to further school spirit. The club has contributed to such worthy projects as the Heart and Cancer Funds. It has sponsored several dances and socials for the students, faculty, and parents. One of the most anticipated events which the club sponsors is the Field Day which is held just before gradua- tion. The requirements for membership are second and third year work in Spanish and an eighty av- erage. Our officers are: president, Priscilla Rand, vice-president, Mary Lou Bierweilerg sec- retary, Judith Gardner, and treasurer, Janet Curran. The aims of the Spanish Club are to speak Spanish and to learn about Spanish life and customs. Our meetings are on the last Thursday of every month. We play Spanish games, listen to interesting talks about famous Spanish people and places, and read stories of Spanish speak- ing countries. All of our business is conducted in the Spanish language. A week before Christmas members of the Spanish Club prepared a Nacimiento, or Nativity scene, for our classroom. They also made a pinata, which is a paper bag filled with nuts and candy and covered with crepe paper. It is hung from the ceiling at Christmas time and for birthday parties. The young people, who are blindfolded, try to break it with a cane. In the future we plan to put on a play in Spanish for Spanish students. Page Sixli MUSIC Our music clubs, under the direction of Mr. Kushious, have enjoyed the usual busy year. They have given a series of concerts, and participated in the Clipper Review, as well as several music festivals. The members of the band chose as their officers: president, William jacobsmeyer, vice- president, Kennard Palfrey, secretary-treasurer, Wilford Caswell. They have played at the Football games and the New England Basketball Tournament, they have participated in a for- mal concert, and they played in the New England and New Hampshire festivals, which were held in Boston, Massachusetts, and Portsmouth, N. H., respectively. We are especially proud of the following members who were chosen for All New England Band: Priscilla Rand, clari- net, Nancy Gorman, piccolo and flute, Jacquelin Gillespie, bass clarinet, William Knight, trumpet, and James Gallagher, baritone. The orchestra has been equally busy. This group chose the following officers: presi- dent, Charles Davidson, vice-president, Priscilla Rand, secretary-treasurer, Sylvia jones. They have participated in a Christmas concert, a joint concert with Deering High of Portland, Maine, and another with Concord High of Concord, N. H., and they have played for the high school and Rotary Club plays. They were also fortunate to attend the New England and New Hamp- shire music festivals. The choral groups took part in the Clipper Review, and were represented in New Eng- land and New Hampshire music festivals. The officers of the glee club are: president, Beverly Petrillo, vice-president, Hannah Moynahan, secretary-treasurer, Helen Culberson. The choir joined with South Portland in presenting a Christmas Cantata, and during Holy Week presented The Holy City with the Mendelsohn choir. The officers of the choir are: president, Norman Nichols, vice-president, Gail Schiot, secretary-treasurer, William Knight. We are indeed grateful to Mr. Kushious for his successful efforts in promoting such a great appreciation of music. LATIN CLUB Under the guidance of Miss Arkell, the Latin Club members strive to learn more about Old Rome, its inhabitants, and its customs. Our way of learning is not all work, we have gained knowledge from such programs as an illustrated lecture by Miss Merriman, a musical, Caesar Crossing the Rubicon, and a costume party, with prizes for the best dressed Romans. This year our oliicers were elected by petition and voting in wards. They are as follows: Consuls, Margaret O'Brien and Marguerite Downing, Aedile, Gail Schiotg Quaestor, Nick Salvador, Censor, Carol Blair. On our Hag, as on the Roman Hag, are the letters S. P. R., which means The Senate and the Roman Peoplef, We, the Latin Club members, are proud of our club, we are the Laeti Laetini, the Happy Latins! Page Sixty-fi1'e HI-LIGHTS STAFF THE HI-LIGHTS The advisers of the Hi-Lights are Miss Vivian Brown, Miss Katherine Flanagan, and Miss Phyllis Hodgdon. There are no officers. The club is divided into three groups: the art contributors, the writers, and those who mimeograph and assemble the work, as well as sell the paper. There are seventy-five mem- bers, every one of whom is free to do the type of work for which he is adapted. The newspaper contains editorials, sports articles, poetry, and a personal column. The last issue of the newspaper, which was dedicated to service men and women, was sent to those whose addresses were available. It contained a partial list of names of those known to be in the services. The last issue this year will be the most interesting because it will be the graduation issue. Our first laurels go to the advisers who have willingly given their time and energy to the success of this year book. With Miss Giffin's capable assistance, the salesmanship classes have taken care of the sales and distribution. The senior pages, which were so efficiently done, were supervised by Mrs. Fogg, and the clever art work which appears throughout the book was accomplished under the expert guidance of Miss Hodgdon. Miss Winkley, our English adviser, was ever on the alert to help in any way possible, and Mr. Malloy was our publicity agent, taking charge of the advertising department. Miss Talbot was our general super- visor who worked unceasingly with us to perfect our book. The photography in this book was ably done by Warren K. Vantine, our staff photogra- pher, Mr. Volkmann, sports groups and Paul E. Marston cross country. The Portsmouth Her- ald very generously contributed several of our sports action shots. Our printing has been done by Samuel Blaisdell and Son of Portsmouth. We want to thank particularly our advertisers for their financial backing. Our appre- ciation can best be shown by patronizing those places which have supported us, and we ask our readers to help us in this wav to show our gratitude for their aid. If you have enjoyed this book, our sole aim in preparing it has been successfully accom- plished. Sincerely, THE CLIPPER STAFF. M'fQ4 f ' ,Dub I 9 ' Y-7 ,, , W 5 M 3 My W lf N' N A X f. CROSS COUNTRY Our 1950 cross country team enjoyed a most successful season meeting defeat only twice, by Concord and Exeter Academy Varsity, State and New England champs. In our five victorious meets the team showed good balance and gave an excellent display of sportsmanship. Portsmouth was a strong contender for state honors until john Lyons suf- fered an injury which crippled our chances for the title. In spite of this handicap we placed second in state competition. Outstanding runners this season were Robert Conant, Robert Arsenault, and Robert Dixon, our sophomore sensation. These boys ran one, two, three in nearly every meet. An innovation this year was the running of a I. V. schedule. Although losing their three meets the boys showed promise, competing as they did with high and prep school varsity squads including our own. With elements of this year's squad as a nucleus for the varsity next year, we should have a strong, hard-fighting team. Lack of training facilities hampered the boys as usual and they lost out in meets at Bos- ton, Bowdoin College and in State competition. However, some excellent individual records were established during the season. Bob Arsenault ran the mile in 4-46 at Bowdoin and Bob Dixon the i000 in 2-28. Bill jacobsmeyer was first to break the tape in both the four- forty and the three hundred at the state meet. Portsmouth lost the meet to Manchester Cen- tral by dtopping the last event. Page S'cz'cnIy-fain' CHEERLEADERS JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The V. season for l95O adds up chiefly to experience. The boys played only three games splitting them three ways, winning one, tying one and losing one. The kids worked hard under coach Casavola and learned a lot of football which they plan to put to good use next year as members of the varsity. VARSITY FOOTBALL Great praise is due every member of the varsity squad who this year practiced long and played hard to build up a record of which the school can be proud. We know this is not the best record ever, but the boys were honest and sincere and there was nothing but the best of sportsmanship on the playing held. This year for the first time all games Cexcept for the annual Thanksgiving Day clash with Doverl were played under lights and almost every game in the bitter cold. Head football coach Arthur Blanchard and assistant coach small part in making the season a satisfactory one to all concerned. We are under the capable leadership of Miss Dorothy Booth who is assisted by the offi- cers of the club. Our officers this year are Sheila O'Donnell, president, Betty Aston, vice- presidentg Beverly Perham, treasurerg and Maureen Leahy, secretary. At a special assembly in June awards are given for the highest bowling average, to the team with the highest average, to every girl who has a perfect attendance record, and the high-- est award to the most athletic girl of the year. For the first time in the history of the school a golf team for girls is planned. Miss Kath- erine Flanagan is to coach. Yes, the Clippers went through their usual routine of racking game after game in the win column right down to the end of the season. The only game in the lost column came under the heading, Pawtucket East 44, Portsmouth High 39. Last year the Clippers lost only five games and played excellent basketball, but this year, under the guiding hand of our new coach, Big Ed Petro, and the nimble lingertips of Captain Luke Coussoule, they were better than excellent.
