We soon lost our fears as we were cordially welcomed by teachers and upperclassmen. Under the direction of Miss Griffin and Miss Sanders, our class advisers, we conducted our first class election. Olthcers chosen were: Bernard McCabe, presidentg Dorothy Breton. vice- presidentg Sheila O'Donnell, secretaryg and Leonard Daigle. treasurer. A Halloween art' was viven to welcome us to the hi th school and to hel w us in uet- . i Q t tint' ac uainted with the other students. Athletic awards were vresented to a number ol bovs s Q 4 J who participated in sports. Though, like most sophomore years, ours was comparatively un- eventful, it rolled rapidly by and we found ourselves promoted to the junior class. Class members are active in sports and in school clubs and activities, piling up a record of honors of which any class could be proud. H. S. were like going through a maze. we emerged tri- umphant, full-fledged Sophomores, humbled only hy the presence of the upperclassmen. Once accustomed to our surroundings we discovered. much to our surprise. that Portsmouth High School wasnt as had as we had feared. instead. we really liked it! Although we settled down and prepared tor what we thought would he a long year, we can now look hack on a kaleidoscope of events which have combined to make the year pass all too quickly: the election of class ofilicersg tryouts for cheerleaders iselections from our class were Betty Aston. Mary Doyle. Alherta Littlefield, and Dorothy Crowleylg the Sophomore Hop which was the hest of rung the junior varsity foothall games at which the teams were cheered on hy loyal supportersg the track and field events which included many ahle Sopho- moresg the juniors varsity haskethall games which were well worth the long waits outside the gymg the almost weekly Community Center dances which a good portion of our class attended and appreciated. They started hy knocking oil the Maine champs, York, by a score of 25-35. Next they defeated Exe- ter Academy, who later became New England Prep School Champions, 26-53. They went on to heat Dover High School 22-33, but lost to the New Hampshire Freshmen 38-2l. In their next start they trampled over Rochester High School 15-50. The Clippers finished the reg- ular season hy losing to Concord 42-17. The Port City boys finished third in the state meet, behind Concord and Keene. The outstanding runners were Co-Captains Boh Goodsell and Bolv Conantg Boh Arsenault. Art Splaine and Wes Morgan. Those receiving letters were: Conant, Morgan, Arsenault, Goodsell, Ly- ons, Rowe, Splaine, Tremaine, and Pomerleau. Next year's prospects are very good with most of the lettermen returning.
