r I Today mankind is caught up in the midst of a fast-paced, commercialized, and highly computer- ized society. Each day brings new tasks to add to an already overburdened load, and there is never enough time to do them all. In the fury of this pace one has no time to stop and think - only to act and react. But there is more to living than this superficial existence of speed, light, and machine. Man must take time to stop . .. and let his God given senses absorb the glories of life which were first placed on this earth for him. f eftTSMe UTH PUBLIC LIBRARY 601 COURT STREET PORTSMOUTH, VA 23704 ,V The search for knowledge is basic to the building of one’s awareness. Each new day brings new learning experiences whether it be from working with patients, lectures in anatomy, or just listening to each other. 2 t [ 3 4 ADMINISTRATION 1 enderly now let all men turn to the earth Nancy Newhall Mrs. Lois Daniels Director School Of Nursing 6 Mr. C. The learning gained here will act as a foundation for what is to come afterwards. 14 15 Fundamentals Of Nursing It is here, in this class that the student becomes more fully aware of the basic nursing skills as well as her duties and responsibilities toward the patient. One must never forget that the patient ' s comfort and health come first. 16 Drugs And Solutions And Pharmacology Who can forget all those table of equivalents that had to be memorized? Mrs. Susan Clark - Advisor 33 Can you remember September 8, 1970? The thoughts and feelings you experienced that day? How about all those strange, new faces? Remember the upperclassmen laughing and warning you of the welcoming they had planned for you, the Class of ' 73, the new Rats of P. G.H. School of Nursing. Do you remember the early morning bus rides to O.D.U. still half asleep, only to be awakened by the smell of Formaldehyde and a skinned cat. Interpersonal relationships, looking and acting professional, tight beds, and the underlying principles sounded like a mighty big order to fill. However, under Mother Edwards encouraging guidance the pieces began to fit together. Summer ' s here! Only no fun in the sun for you. Mrs. Jackson is determined to make you think of that what else, and how many reams of notebook paper did you buy that summer for Mrs. Futrell?? At last, a chance to catch your breath while Mrs. Jackson added to your knowledge with Medical-Surgical Nursing 11 and 111. Now it ' s off to Crownsville, Maryland. Do you remember our built in alarm clock in the H-Y Building. Never have heard a bell quite like that since! Do you remember the good meals - June does - she really fell for breakfast. It was too bad Connie couldn ' t be with us - certainly some of her home remedies would have made a dif- ference in the lives of the patients. Do you remember your Summer of ' 72? Medical-Surgical Nursing IV with Mrs. King. The bones and the brain - emergencies and intensive care. You may not have acquired a sun tan - but you did acquire much knowledge. September 1972 - seniors. How do you feel? Ecstatic? Anxious? Fearful? Miss King labored continuously to deliver us with a knowledge of Obstetrics, and Mrs. Clark helped us to grow and develop in a knowledge of the Nursing of Children. Mean- while Mrs. Daniels endeavored to adjust us Professionally. Petrified we approached Senior Seminars. Did you have a case of the nervous diarrhea?? Teachers for a day was almost too much to imagine - but you made it - and it wasn ' t as bad as you thought, maybe?! Apprehensively but eagerly we began Leadership Skills with Mrs. King. Did you get your days and nights mixed up working 3-11 and 11-7? April 27 - our farewell dance. A night we ' ll all remember. A farewell to many happy and sad times that had drawn us all together over the past 2 1 2 years. May 18, 1973, 8:00 P.M. - graduation, white uniforms, black bands, and the final reward for much hard work. It is now time for the real test - self realization in a new capacity. Each new experience in her life helps to guide her footsteps to fulfill her dream. One day, she too, may follow the Light of the Lamp. DOING GOD ' S WORK Now is the time for action and for deed. Let us not stumble blindly, darkly grope But hold our candle high and let its flame Provide a guiding light for comfort, hope. Begin! And seize your opportunities. There are so many things that we must do: Give aid and succor, banish loneliness. And bring to weary hearts strength fresh and new. And let them know, those sickened with distress. That other folk still feel and love and care. Today, begin His work, and -Al i UpUBRABY iU ' VA Copy 4 371.809755 Lamp The Lamp. 1973
