A new experience and a new career began for nineteen students September 23, 1968. As we registered in the School of Nursing, collected our textbooks, class schedules and our orientation program, some of us were highly excited, and some of us were apprehen- sive. However, we were the Class of 1971 and were proud. Rat Week was full of laugh- ter and fun. Courses at Frederick College were - Ugh! We laughed some and cried a lot about those courses. What does a Mockingbird have to do with an Anatomy exam anyway? Keep those sheets tight and use your principles, was the foreword of Mrs. Ed- wards our Instructor in Fundamentals of Nursing. When our new drip dry uniforms came they were worn with grace and pride. What a transition from laundry starch to wash and wear. We were the first class to wear the new uniforms and accepted criticism as well as complaints. We knew it was only a matter of time before the blue pin-striped uniforms would be turned in for a solid white style. The month of June came and four of our members departed, however, they were not forgotten. We soon learned that work did not end with college and the background in Biological and Social Sciences we received, enabled us for efficient Clinical Nursing. The summer began with Medical Surgical Nursing I. Classes and experiences were con- current. Mrs. Jackson was our Instructor and pushed us all. Along with this, Mrs. Fut- rell was drumming into us all she could about Pharmacology. How we remember the reference work! As beginning Junior students, September 1969, we left for our Psychiatric Nursing experience. We will be remembered as the first class to attend Crownsville State Hos- pital in Crownsville, Maryland. We had no idea of what to expect on this experience, and soon all fears became only memorable experiences. Twelve weeks later we were back at our home school. Back to Mrs. Jackson and Medical Surgical Nursing n and III. More knowledge , skills and abilities were developed enabling us to administer good nursing care to our patients. We ended our Junior year with Mrs. King teaching Medical Surgical Nursing IV and receiving experiences in the specialties. We had arrived as Seniors. Our blue bands signified we were there - all fourteen of us! However, three of us had received our first degree as - Mrs. Beginning Maternal Child Health; the whole Maternity Nursing book had to be learned under Miss King’s direction, while Miss Brooks had us write our own Pediatric’s book! Mrs. Daniels taught us a course in Professionalism and Adjustments as Graduate Nurses. At the same time the National Student Nurses Association proclaimed that professionalism is a state of mind. Back to Mrs. Jackson for Senior Seminars where we became teachers as well as students. With six weeks left in our curriculum program we had a chance to develop our Leadership Skills. Mrs. King was always available on 3-11 and 11-7 duty. It is the dream of aU Student Nurses to operate a unit in the hospital. Our Senior Farewell Dance in April was fantastic. Our raffle tickets had paid off for us as we were presented with our own dozen red roses. The countdown is over. On May 28, 1971 we will be almost as sad to leave, will be happy to have our new career before us. as we Dreaming about that last prep, Toni? This is what three years of nursing school does to you! ! The Student Nurses Association of Virginia appeared to have broadened itself out by having relevant issues and actions this year, such as the convention held at the Golden Triangle in Norfolk. The new enthusiasm caused many of our students to take active roles in S. N. A.V. projects. This is shown in our school, as well, with Linda Hazzard as President of District 1. Other offices are held by Pat Rudolph, Corresponding Secretary and Darlene Brewer, Parliamentarian. Other students are active with various committees and this enthusiasm will hopefully con- tinue in the future. Siucfeni OCurse Mrs. Elizabeth Warrington was selected from the Senior class by the S.G.A. as the Student Nurse of the year from Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing. She was, therefore, placed in competi- tion with other nursing schools in this area for the title of District I Student Nurse, which eventually, if won, would lead to the state and national levels. The topic of the speeches was Creativity in Nursing and various aspects were exemplified on all levels. We are proud to have Elizabeth Warrington represent our school as Miss Student Nurse.
