September 5, 1967, 22 scared and anxious freshmen entered Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing. Rat day was really a day to remember. Dressed in our feed sacks with rat tails and ears we marched over to the hospital to make spectacles of ourselves while loving every minute of it. We ended the day with a picnic and the junior class chose Vickie as the Best Rat. The next week we start- ed classes at O.D.C. We will never forget the bus rides and the day the bus broke down at the toll booth. November 8, 1967, our first day on the clinical unit, we were so proud of our uniforms but little did we know that we were the last class to wear them. Then came mid-semester and February 14, 1968, the day we received our first stripe. Every cap seemed to set a little higher Second semester we added Nutrition and Drugs and Solutions to our schedule. We saw two of our girls elected to District 1, S.N. A.V. offices. Bonnie became second vice-president and Jinny became parliamentarian. Wendy was crowned Miss Portsmouth. Then came June and this ended our college days. We all left on a much needed month’s vacation. Connie was elected our representative to the Alumni Dance. After Christmas we thought things had settled down; however, Brenda came down with the measles and we all had to get a measles shot. On February 13, 1969 we presented our long remembered variety show, The Juniors Do Their Thing . Later that month Bonnie was elected president of District 1, S.N. A.V. We had the month of March for a much appreciated vacation. March 31, 1969 we checked into the Jones Building at Springfield State Hospital, Sykesville, Maryland. We will always have fond memo- ries of C ward and all the patients. Nancy became our class field mouse because she was the first to be bopped on the head. We returned from Sykesville ready to start Medical - Surgical Nursing IV and to apply our newly ac- quired psychiatric knowledge to our nursing care. September 1969, finally arrived and we proudly added our new blue bands to our caps and started courses in Pediatrics and O.B. In November we presented our second variety show, Jest One More Time . Later that month at the Alumni dance, Bonnie was crowned queen and Brenda was senior representative. Now as graduation grows near we are trying to make plans for graduating on May 8, 1970. In front of our families and iriends, dressed in our white uniforms and caps with black bands we will receive our pins and diplomas. We will all have ambivalent feelings about leaving to start new lives as professional nurses. Our class statistics are as follows: Entered 22 Married 6 Transfers 4 Engaged 2 Withdrawn 12 Hopeful 5 Graduated 14 Service 1
