Senior G ass Gfisiort September 5, 1961. Thirty girls converged on Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing. Eager ! Curious ! Apprehensive ! Their only common denominator was a desire for a career in nursing. Registration completed, we introduced ourselves, met our roommates and tentatively laid the cornerstones of lasting friendships. Our initial confusion was compounded as we began our orientation week. So many names ! So many new faces ! We met the members of the faculty, the administrative staff and many other people essential to the funuctioning of our school of nursing and hospital. As the week progressed, our sense of strangeness lessened and the warmth of our sisterhood began to envelop us. We were feted by the upper classes at a water- melon feast. Rat Day included clothes worn inside out, flushing Johns , no make-up, and locks uncombed. What an initiation by the upper classmen ! The amenities observed, we began the struggle for academic survival. Each of us was to encounter her own particular bug-a-boo , Happily most of us were equal to the challenge. Few of us will forget the endless hours in the classroom or the dogged and furtive study after lights out. At Thanksgiving we had our first big dance. We were so proud of Nancy, our at- tendant to the queen, in her pretty pink gown. Next on our agenda was the annual Christmas dance sponsored by the medical staff for the students of Maryview and P.G.H. Then vacation time came m relax and spend with our, families. March 2, 1962. Anticipation was running high as twenty-five of us received our caps. We held our heads high as we sang the Nightingale Pledge. As summer vacation was completed, our junior year was upon us. Shortly, new students were to arrive. Our attention was now directed toward new challenges. Pedi- atries, Obstetrics, and Psychiatry divided our class for the first time. Along with this separation came the realization that our goal was within sight, but there were still plenty of learning experiences to handle. Karen represented our class at the Thansgiving dance this year. How stunning she looked in her gold and bronze gown ! Our senior year is here ! Vivian, in all her loveliness, was queen of the ball. As graduation approaches, we await it with mixed emotions. Our major goal is just about completed, but there are other new goals ahead. Good Luclt, Linda M. , Linda B. , Linda S. , Louise, Ludie, Leah, Anita, Judy, Jacci, Jo Anne, Connie, Rickie, Eva Ann, Carol, Vivian, Nancy, Karen, Margie and Mary Lee. To all who have extended a helping hand to this graduating class of 1964, we ex- press our sincere appreciation. Sue Kossick
