.Senior C iciSi On July 16, 1956, we had the first contact with our future classmates at the School of Nursing, Portsmouth General Hospital. We took long and complicated examinations, toured the hospital, and had a most enjoyable picnic at Lake Ahoy. Then we returned on September 4, and moved into the Nurse ' S Home where we were to spend our next three years. We started our three year period v ith a class of ten. On November 4, we attended our first dance. It was given by the SNAV District I at the Planter ' s Club. At the Thanksgiving Dance in 1956, we elected Shelby Sexton as our candidate for queen. Everyone told us that a pre-clinical ! student had never been known to win. However, we watched proudly I as Shelby was crowned at the dance by Dr. Glynn. In November, several of our classmates were models for the I Fashion Show sponsored by the Student Body. In December, we attended a tea at DePaul Hospital. The medical staff entertained the students of Portsmouth General and Mar rview Hospitals at their annual Christmas Dance. We continued to celebrate Christmas by a party at the home of Sally Jo Pearce. Costumes, script, music, and other similar items were the chief topic of conversation on the days before our production of Amahal and the Night Visitors , presented before the student body and their guests. Refreshments followed and then Santa lent his jolly self to the gathering for the distribution of the presents, stockings, etc. After such a hectic week, we were in desperate need of the two weeks vacation given to pre-clinicals at Christmas. V e all said goodby to our roommates and went home to our family for Christmas. Upon our return to school, life had settled down to a steady pace of studying and practical experience on the wards. At this time, we all had begun to look forward to our capping. In January 1957, the Glee Club was formed and all of the pre- clinicals participated. The first public performance of the Glee Club was at the Auxiliary Meeting here at the Nurse ' s Home. Finally our big day arrived on March 4, 1957. We received our caps, capes, and scarves. We were justifiably proud of our new attire. As Freshman students, we began special services, and took more responsibility on the wards. We had some new privileges, and discarded our old habits of returning to the Nurse ' s Home every night at 9 P.M. and lights out each night at 10:30 P.M. On May 8, we attended the Florence Nightingale Memorial Services at the Naval Hospital Auditorium in Portsmouth. Later in May, the Freshman Class went to Ocean View for an outing Everyone was there except Faye, who had the food in her carj We were quite a hungry group! After we finished our exams, we looked forward to the summer months without classes. Part of the class left for their two week vacation. In August the newly formed Glee Club sang for the graduation. Everyone was impressed and anticipated the day when the honors would be theirs. We attended the graduation dance given in honor of the Seniors. receive new students into the school.
