Quiet 1 1 Kool Kats .Senior C iciSi On July 16, 1956, we had the first contact with our future classmates at the School of Nursing, Portsmouth General Hospital. We took long and complicated examinations, toured the hospital, and had a most enjoyable picnic at Lake Ahoy. Then we returned on September 4, and moved into the Nurse ' S Home where we were to spend our next three years. We started our three year period v ith a class of ten. On November 4, we attended our first dance. It was given by the SNAV District I at the Planter ' s Club. At the Thanksgiving Dance in 1956, we elected Shelby Sexton as our candidate for queen. Everyone told us that a pre-clinical ! student had never been known to win. However, we watched proudly I as Shelby was crowned at the dance by Dr. Glynn. In November, several of our classmates were models for the I Fashion Show sponsored by the Student Body. In December, we attended a tea at DePaul Hospital. The medical staff entertained the students of Portsmouth General and Mar rview Hospitals at their annual Christmas Dance. We continued to celebrate Christmas by a party at the home of Sally Jo Pearce. Costumes, script, music, and other similar items were the chief topic of conversation on the days before our production of Amahal and the Night Visitors , presented before the student body and their guests. Refreshments followed and then Santa lent his jolly self to the gathering for the distribution of the presents, stockings, etc. After such a hectic week, we were in desperate need of the two weeks vacation given to pre-clinicals at Christmas. V e all said goodby to our roommates and went home to our family for Christmas. Upon our return to school, life had settled down to a steady pace of studying and practical experience on the wards. At this time, we all had begun to look forward to our capping. In January 1957, the Glee Club was formed and all of the pre- clinicals participated. The first public performance of the Glee Club was at the Auxiliary Meeting here at the Nurse ' s Home. Finally our big day arrived on March 4, 1957. We received our caps, capes, and scarves. We were justifiably proud of our new attire. As Freshman students, we began special services, and took more responsibility on the wards. We had some new privileges, and discarded our old habits of returning to the Nurse ' s Home every night at 9 P.M. and lights out each night at 10:30 P.M. On May 8, we attended the Florence Nightingale Memorial Services at the Naval Hospital Auditorium in Portsmouth. Later in May, the Freshman Class went to Ocean View for an outing Everyone was there except Faye, who had the food in her carj We were quite a hungry group! After we finished our exams, we looked forward to the summer months without classes. Part of the class left for their two week vacation. In August the newly formed Glee Club sang for the graduation. Everyone was impressed and anticipated the day when the honors would be theirs. We attended the graduation dance given in honor of the Seniors. receive new students into the school. They were honored at a cook-ont at the home of Mrs. Daniels, T. ■■ •! J ■4 11 ” i . ‘ I ' wV.: ■ { • ■ I t ■ ' a M .1 ■’ j . ' 4 ' ■ K - 4 i TV -v | ' ik ' ■ « t y .■■’ ' ■ j ' ■• v t4 i r. ' . i r . Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and the Emergency Room, At Thanksgiving, we sold chances for a turkey to benefit our class treasury, Mrs, Lee, 0,R, Supervisor, was the lucky winner. This year we selected E, MacPherson for our candidate for queen of the annual Thanksgiving Dance and again claimed a winner. The Christmas Dance Given by the medical staff was held on Dec. 15, and everyone had quite a lolly time. The Junior Class Christmas Party was held at the home of E, MacPherson. The Student Body’s Christmas Party was held at the Nurse’s Home with Dr. Peleo making a fine Santa, In February, the new students were capped, and vre received two black stripes across the corner of our cap. This was to be a new custom for Junior Students, In May, (one year from our last beach party), we again went to Ocean View, This time we were sure to take the food! Again we departed for our vacations, but this year we had increased our time off to three weeks. Three of our classmates left for Sykesville, Md, for their psychiatric affiliation in July, In September, the Graduation Dance honoring the class of ’5B was held. The new students entered school and were welcomed by a picnic at Wayside Park, Upon their arrival, we added a wide black band to our caps and were recognized as Seniors, At Thanksgiving the annual Alumnae Dance was held, and was enjoyed by all, R, Barnes was our candidate for queen this time. Rejoicing was expressed by all as Christmas presented itself with flakes of snov;, snowball fights and jingle bells and our Santa (Dr, Juguilon) presenting us with gifts and filling our stockings at the annal Christmas Party, A Fund Raising Dance for the Seniors was held Feb. 6, 1959 So is the life as a Senior Student, Graduation approaching elated us all from April until September appointments for graduation pictures, the anticipation of our own formal Graduation Dance, We do not feel that graduation is the end,, .it will be the beginAing of a new phase of life to most of us with plans of new nursing fields, new ideals, goals to attain and developing a better insight towards life and happiness. S. Pearce E. MacPherson Pag, 16 enior May 30, 1979 The reunion of the class of 1959, Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing, was held yesterday at the Cavalier Hotel at Virginia Beach, Miss Evangeline MacPherson, a New York socialite and former : president of the class presided. She was sporting a glorious c, suntan, and said that she had lost 17 lbs, in the last three I days. She has finally found a diet that suits her. It consists ji mostly of sauer krout and brussel sprouts, but she has no difficulty I since she learned to eat these during the old days at P.G.H, The first to arrive was Mrs, Faye Parrish, the former Miss Faye i Hooker, She now has two children, Bill Jr,, and little Nellie, i She still enjoys cooking German Chocolate cake for bake sales and has almost conquered the pizza pie. Miss Jill West, or is it Lt, West, USN, attracted lots of atten- tion as she entered in her uniform. Things were slightly confused ; as she gave out all of her first-hand information, but finally settled down. She has just completed a tour of dutj ' ’ in France, : She has become quite famous as a demonstrator of that new dance, ' handjive,” For the program, Miss Ruth Haas, Ambassador to the Phillippines ! gave a report on the nursing situation in the Islands, She has : recently bean vacationing in New Orleans, As everyone was watching the door, in stepped Mrs, Clyde Morgan, • the former Miss Ruth Speight, She has recently been appointed ' supervisor of obstetrics at the Elizabeth City Hospital in N, C, i She is kept quite busy with her work and her four little Morgan boil’s, Henry, Dannie, Binky and Bennie, Miss Frances Callahan, now Mrs, Dick Summers just entered from the kitchen and exclaimed, that bl nk chef has burned the desert. She is now living in Ohio, She and Mr, Siimmers have recently become quite well known due to the unusual nature of their auto- mobile — a 1947 Chevy, It s still running around. The name is Putter Putt , l ss Pearce, after receiving her B.S, degree at the University S of Virginia, is now supervisor of Pediatrics at Portsmouth General . Last to enter, but certainly not the least, was Miss Rhoda I Barnes. Since she has recently announced her engagement she was , forced to resign from her office as President of the National Old Maid s Society of America, We should not fail to mention the many benefits that the old maids in this country have gained as a result of her work, V e think that her most outstanding contribution is the Retreat for Older Old Maids, a home next door to the Old Soldiers Home in Washington, D.C. The reunion was certainly enjoyed by all, and was concluded by a musical selection by the Butterfly Club, Pag, 17 J, West S, Pearce F 1 1 ' ' i r-y-f 1 j • - I T% J% ■ ' . w • frlfc fj.r ' t|k i . m - 4jiir ' ‘ ' V • - ■ - .. - rv ' -.i 4 % B f ii ill i Ik NOT PICTURED Janice Brown Peggy Brown Linda Gaboon Carolyn Henkle Mona House Marjorie Morris Shirley Phillips Pag 19 f . . ■ • ' f 4 reAhmen j.
