It has given us freedom of worship, protection of life and property, opportunities for study, for work, for play. It has given us an ldC2ll DENZOC7'dLj1. That which we call democracy today is not perfect. It has its faults, which we see all too plainly. Democracy is more a goal toward which we advance than an accomplished fact. From time to time the pathway toward that goal is blocked with obstacles. Such obstacles confront our country today. VVe are a nation at war. The past achievements of our nation give us great faith that we will overcome the barriers before us and shall, once more be the peaceful nation that we were destined to be, Here is the story of years at school-a story whose events could have happened only where the democratic idea exists. And we dedicate our story to Those lllen and PV0l7767Z Evezywlzere lfiflzo are Fzzghlizzg Tlzal D6l7Z06I'HCjl Ilflay Live M- e-WHO WE AREW-H VVe are high school students now-and that is a precious term to those of us who do not have much longer to claim it as our title. 'We are the daughters and sons of doctors, farmers, merchants, soldiers, sailors. Some of us want to 'learn to be teachers, nurses, engineers, still others have a position in the business world and a goal. But, what- ever our purpose in wanting it, we are all here for an education. The boys have had their near future planned by our Uncle Sam. Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually we differ, each from the other. Each has his own personality, his own aspirations, his own joys, his own sorrows. Each boy, each girl is an important part of our student body. We are tall and short, thin and fat, blonde and brunette, have blue eyes and brown, like spinach and don't like spinach. W'e are two hundred and Hfty different people. 3 Senior Class OfHcers President PRESTON M AYNARD' Vice-Pfwident Tfmwfer DOT MARSHALL PAT PILLAR Secrelagx - ' BERNADINE SMITH Class Flower: Carnation Class Colors: Red and White E41 FRANKLIN BENJAMIN AUSTIN Frank . Everyone has heard-the President is none other than the one and only who always had a taste for pretty girls, Billy Austin. This is the boy that Mary Ketchum cauglitem.', On this train we ran into several of our old school chums, Dot Marshall and Pat Pillar, who have finished their Cadet Nurses Training and are in the U. S. Navy Nurses Corps. Both have high ranks. During this trip they told us about the latest news of what used to be the Senior Class of 1945? First we learned that- Erma Carden is a. hair dresser. She should be, you know, she practiced enough in school. Preston Maynard is in Hollywood taking the place of Eddy Bracken for the duration. He'll probably be such a hit that Eddy can't get back his old job. But Preston still likes blondes. Likes himself, tool Gilbert Belangia, as you've heard him millions of times on the Movietone News, is a big success, he always did know the latest news of the certain vicinity that he was in. Mary Lou Haywood is doing a wonderfuljob, too. She has a knitting club for lonely girls, but she's not lonely, no, shels happily married. Shirley Jones is now a librarian in Connecticut. I wonder, and so do others, if the close relation she had with Miss Hager had anything to do with it? Bernadette Byrum Q Bunky j is now working in the National Citizens Bankf, but for me, personally, I think itis a shame to keep such a dainty person behind bars. And guess what! Curtis Small is now a Captain in the Army. Look Curtis, be sure to tell those under you to do as you say do, and not as you do. James Odom is manager of the Top Hat Nite Clubf' -in Chicago. But, gosh! I thought he was supposed to be shy, by what I hear of the show girls he has, he must have wonderful taste. Jeanette Belangia thought she was going to wind up being a waitress in the store that her mother and father own but wiggled her way out and is now author of The True Story Magazine? She really puts out some good stories. I wonder if any of them are true and could any of them be the copy of some of her love affairs? Billy Yount is a General in Uncle Samis Army. We knew he would make it. Lillian Murphy is now Head Nurse at De Paul Hospital in charge of the Nursery. Mary Frances Doughtery is nursing in De Paul Hospital. Melvin Murphy is the worldis most famous racer. He's finally got a car that can stand some speed. Don't mean to be making fun because it this carj got a lot of people where they wanted to go. Isn't that right, Blimp? Orene johnson, Helen Carey and Gloria Riggan have a school for nurses. It's a good example because if a lot of girls follow their steps they'll really get a lot out of life. Just now the train stopped for some unknown reason to me and maybe it was unknown to me because I know nothing of trains. Pretty soon, after sitting there several minutes, none other than jack Fentress walked through the car. He recognized us and just had to stop to say hello. He had finally reached his ambition-chief fireman on the locomotive. He told us that the train stopped to load on more coal for him to shovel. He also told me more news which I was glad to hear. Betty Jean Evans is a telephone operator, a pay phone operator. She says she gets a kick out of giving people their nickels back. Beatrice Wfilliams has made a wonderful Navy nurse. It takes nice, considerate girls to make good nurses. Don't you think? Bobby Carson, it 'looks as if you wished something on yourself when you said years ago that you would be a hobo. I understand you were caught riding the train that Jack is fireman on. You've got plenty of life left yet and you always were pretty smart in school. Thatis the part I canit understand. Sammy Peebles is an electrical engineer. He's finally settled down and married. You guessed it- Margie Clifton. Thelma Hampton is now a clothes designer. She has just started in the business. Homer Lee Wilkerson is an exercise instructor. He's determined to make little men big. U41 ' Senior Class Prophesy Frank Austin is the big man of Chesterfield cigarettes now, but will he ever start smoking? Ruth L'Esperance is a tap dancer in Washington, D. C. Even though in high school she didnit tap so much, we knew she was good. Doris Nixon is married and has two ofthe cutest children. Theyive both got blonde hairjust like their motheris. Josephine Powers is secretary to the president of Beech Nut Manufacturing Company. Bernadine Smith is now the principal in Brooklyn High School. Her name will really be in history, The First Lady Brooklyn High School Principalf, but we wish her lots of success. V '4With this news the train again picked up its speed and jack had to tell us goodbye. Now the porter is calling out, ':Leaving for New York in five minutes, so with this I close, saying that I hope the Senior Classes that follow are as happy as the year I was a senior in '45. First, we would like to pause a moment to thank lVIr. Evanosky and our teachers for the kind consideration they have shown us in all four years. VVhen we entered as Freshmen, Mr. Evanosky, known as C'coach, was in his second year of being principal of Portlock. lfVe think you have done a swell job, Coach! Our iirst day of high school will be remembered by all of us. Frankly, we were scared to death. just think, changing classes was something new and having more than one teacher, my-how diH'erent it would be from grammar school. The class was rather large, so, two 'teachers were provided for us. Nliss Ramsey had a class of girls, while Miss Moyer had the rest. Our first class oliieers were chosen, who were: Robert Baker, President, Danny Thraser, Vice-President, Dorothy Marshall, Secretary, and Doris Spencer, Treasurer. Some of the boys and girls went out for sports-something which they had been wanting to do for a long time. It sure was a thrill for the ones who made the team, too. But, of course, there was a damper put on the light. The upper classmen treated us as if we were babies. But we showed 'em ! just wait until our Sophomore year, we said. VVell, Sophomore year rolled around and we weren't considered babies anymore. My, we were proud. Now, it was our time to tease the new Freshmen-and we poured it on. Again, our class had to be divided. The teachers were Miss Turner and Miss Brosius. But Miss Brosius left us during the year and from then on about three different teachers took a try at teaching us. VVe elected our class ollicers, who turned out to be: President, Nelson Bondurant, Vice-President, Carol Norlleet, Secretary and Treasurer, Dorothy Marshall. During this year Portloek's Hrst Minstrel was presented and many of the Sophomores participated, basketball was the main sport enjoyed by many of us. Although we werenit considered babies anymore we just didn't feel quite big enough yet. But we still had two more years to go. September, 1943, rolled around-plus Junior year. This year will probably remain in our mem- ories more than the previous two years. At last we were all together in one class-one big happy family-with Miss Belote and Miss Gooden as class sponsors. Nelson Bondurant was elected President and Carol Norlleet as Vice-President. Bernadine Smith was Secretary-Treasurer. Also, dance com- mittees were elected as this was our year to give them. The most important event of the school year was the Junior and Senior Prom. All of us had plenty of fun getting ready for the prom-mostly decorating the gym. The colors used were blue and white and it really did look swell. Seniors! Real, live Seniors! It just didnit seem possible! Here we were going to Mrs. Compton's room every morning-even though many of us were late most of the time. The Hrst thing to do was to elect our olhcers, which were as follows: Preston Maynard, President, Dorothy Marshall, Vice- President and Business Manager, Bernadine Smith, Secretary, and Pat Pillar, Treasurer. A lot of important things happened this year. First, our rings, then announcements, then our pictures had to be taken for the annual. This was the first annual Portlock had had in many years and the largest part of it was devoted to the Seniors. The play was about the most important thing and Hnally we started practicing. The name of it was i'janie's One Track Mind. Jeanette Belangia took the leading role of Janie Too, during this year, the boys' football team won the State Class C Championship. Also the girls' basketball team won the County Class Cn title. The teams consisted mostly of Seniors- of which we are mighty proud. At last comes graduation. Too many of us thought this was the saddest part of all. just think! The happiest days of our lite-over. But, we won't forget Portlock, our fellow students, and the good, as well as bad, times we've had. lfVe'll be out in the world, making a living. But our thoughts will wander backe-aback through our school days-and our memories will be sweet. So, goodbye for a while, school mates, teachers, and Mr. Evanosky. VVelve enjoyed being with you. DOROTHY MARSPIALL, Historian. l 77 l - l-Those Who Exoelleol-- As we think back over the many years past, there are some people who seem 'to stand out in our memories. Those who, in the opinion of the student body, have made the greatest contributions to our high school life, who have been most out- standing, are presented here. Perhaps the things some of these people did were only routine duties that fall to persons entrusted with official responsibilities, but they performed these duties well and for this we recognized them. Some of them did much more than their duty and for that reason were chosen by fellow students to represent them. They all have one thing in commonethey were chosen representatives to exemplify the best that Portlock has to offer. They have achieved this, our pinnacle of high school success. These are they who excelled- MARJORIE SUE REAMS Glee Club, 1942-43-44-45 Paper Staff, 1943-44-45 Annual Staff, 1945 Office Worker, 1943-45 4-H Club, 1945 Bus Patrol Captain, 1942-43-44-45 Hall Monitor, 1945 Portlock Follies, 1945 N INA MILDRED ODOM Student Council, Secretary-Treasurer, 1944-45 Student Council Secretary, 1944-45 County Secretary of S. Putting on this annual was a lot of worry and head- aches, but it was really a lot of fun and we enjoyed it. Our clubs this year, functioned very nicely. The demerit system was turned over to the faculty until it was foolproof. The Honor Society performed its usual task each week -very nicely, too. Our newspaper, The Pioneer, was printed regu- larly. The staff put out wonderful 'cnewsyw editions. The Glee Club, Home Economic Club and the Orchestra performed their activities nicely as usual. These are the members of that unit which during the session of 1944-45 have directed their efforts toward making our own democracy, limited as it may be in influence, a project that is practical and an ideal to be cherished. five do not know how much our Councills lessons and practices may have been contributing to a more democratic future. VVe do know that our Council cannot be successful without the force of the whole student body behind it. QTO the Student Council of 1944-45, we offer our vote of appreciationj The S. C. A. has done much of its work through committees, the most active of which is the program committee. Other committees are beautification, health, safety, civic, library, and liunchroom. One ofthe most outstanding achievements of the S. C. A. has been realized through the County organization, the only one of its kind in our district-the strengthening of the bonds of fellowship and appreciation among the separate schools in the County. Portlock had the honor of being represented on the executive committee for the County organization. Mildred Odom, our school secretary for 1943-44 and 1944-45, also served as County secretary. - l 35 Cheerleaders Caplain ......... ..,.... 1 JRESTON MAYNARD M I 4 A... ,.,,.., N Ewan DOUGHTERTY C0-Cajllain ...............Y..,. We attended all the football and basketball games and had a very successful year. We are going to continue through the baseball season this year, for this is the first time in seven years that Portlock has had cheerleaders for baseball. W'e hope to have as much success in baseball as we have had in the past two seasons. During football, our captain, Preston Maynard, was unable to cheer with us because of playing on the team, but he was there to back us up and he attended all the meetings-and was back with us for the basketball season. We are sorry to have to lose him again for baseball, but we know he'll still be backing us up. We are losing him this year for good as Preston will graduate. We also regret losing the following people who will graduate this year: Christine Clapehart and Erma Carden. Mildred Odom won't be with us next year as she is leaving to attend another school. The cheerleaders have changed their Alma Mater from Old Portlock Highw to Tell Me VVhy?i' 1 We hope that the cheerleaders next year will have just as much success and have just as an enjoyable time as we have had this year. The cheerleaders would like to mention and have recognized one of the former members of our squad, Jeanne Sherman, who passed away on April 12, 1945. l35l J J Hall- Bus - Street Monitors Betty Jean Evans Betty Boyette Garland Oakes Shirley Harrell Marxfin Goodwin David Sniith Bobby Gwyn ack Rowland arnes Rimner HALL MONITORS Jane Nlarshall Maurice Sawyer Nancy Doxey Henrietta Weinloerger STREET PATROL GARLAN OAKES, Captain HOWARD SYKES, Limzlenanl John Burnham Jerrell Barnett Donald Pangle ' Jimmy Garrett Fred Davis D. The girls deserve much praise, they have won the title of the Norfolk County Champs of ,45. The forwards played very hard during the season, but the guards were working just as hard in their own way. The guards were Jeanette Belangia fcaptainj, Pat Pillar, and Ernestine Robinson. Forwards for the first team were Audrey Capps, Mary Frances Daugherty, and Barbara Jean Waters. Substitutes were Mary Louise Rowland, Jackie VVentz, Dorothy Marshall, Della Mae Rudiger, and Ann Capps. I think each girl on the basketball team should be thoroughly recognized as to their standpoints of previous years in basketball. First, the school is very sorry to lose the following players who will graduate this june: Marv Frances Daugherty, Barbara jean Waters, Jeanette Belangia, Pat Pillar and Dorothy Marshall. Four of these girls were on the first team. Mary Frances Dougherty has played a very good game of ball, through her three years of basket- ball, and this year led the Portlock Girl Pioneers in points, having made a total of 276 points. Barbara jean VVaters played just as good a game with her wonderful footwork, and also in following Mary Frances in points. We are sorry to lose 'cBeany', this year with the other seniors, and I'rn sure the basketball team of next year will miss her height in those jump ballsf' Pat Pillar, another senior of '45, and also one of our best guards on the first team, was very successful in her lootwork. This is Pat's second year in basketball, making her receive a letter and a star this year. We know she will be greatly missed next year. Dorothy Marshall was not on the first team, but we could always depend on her to be at all of the games and to a good job when she did play. YVe won't forget Dot's work at the Broad Creek Village game-she was really in there pitching. Earnestine Robinson, guard on the first team, was wonderful in getting the ball after the opposite team had succeeded in attempting a shot. 'iRed was in there lighting for the ball every second. Best of luck, Earnestine, in next yearis basketball. 'We are hoping that next yearis team will be as successful ,as the girls were this year. Audrey Capps, forward and guard, was depended upon greatly to play either position, she was an all 'round basketball player. We are hoping Audrey, that you will lead the new players of next year to victory. You were wonderful as forward and guard both and the girls appreciate your playing as guard when you were needed. Anne Capps, who played as a substitute forward, played a very good game this year but she plans to achieve more success this coming year. She went out for basketball for the mere game of it and was a very good sport the whole year. Pm sure that she will achieve her aim if she goes about it with the same attitude. Good luck, Ann. jackie Wentz, who just received her suit this year, surely deserved credit. She played very hard in each game and did her very best, and that quality in a basketball player is outstanding. YVe sincerely hope that in the coming years she will be just as successful. Mary Louise Rowland, who played as a forward, is a very good ball player, too. She did splendid work in following up her shots, and on her footwork on the court. 'We hope that she will play as good next year as the one that has passed. Last but not least we have Jeanette Belangia, guard, who played ball in a way that I'm sure the basketball girls will miss next year. She was a natural as guard, having played this position during her three years in basketball. She was elected by the girls to be their captain. X'Ve knew that she did her best and her best is good enough for us. I also want to say that the entire school appreciates the way the whole basketball team played and their friendliness and attitude toward other school teams. They never once had an argument with another team. The girls on the basketball team have asked us to let you know how much they appreciate having as their coaches Mrs. Wfilson and Miss Alice Belote. They never once let the girls down, they were in there rooting for them all the time. Thanks again, Mrs. W'ilson and Ivliss Belote. lN7ith this I finish and leave, hoping that the team of '45 and '46 will win the Norfolk County Championship. f38l Girlas Basketball H39 Dec. 8 Dec. 12 Dec. 15 Dec. 19 Jan. 5 Jan. 9 Jan. 12 jan. 16 jan. 23 Jan. 26 Feb. 6 Feb. 9 Feb. 14 Basketball GIRL'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE I 1944-45 -South Mills ...... -Norview ...... .. -. . -Kempsvllle ..,.,...,. ,. -Oceana ............. -Broad Creek ....... .- -Churchland ........ .- -South Norfolk ......,. ., -NOFVICW ...........,.. .. -Cradock ............ -Kempsville ........ -Alexander Park ......... .- -Holy Trinity ...... .. -Broad Creek ,...... .. Since no other school in the State challenged our team, we were hailed half State Champions, which is a record we are mighty proud of. From the day the iirst call was made for candidates for the team, the boys went out to the field with very fine spirit and practiced for about three hours daily, under the fine leadership of our coach, Billy Morgan. Not only did the boys do a fine job in practice, but they also worked very hard getting the field in shape. Before the first game with Oceana High, Coach Morgan had the boys in fairly good shape con- sidering the time they had practiced, but luck and weather was against them, and the final score: Oceana 8, Portlock 6. This was a heart-breaking game for the boys, but Coach Morgan was pleased with their showing and encouraged them to fight even harder in their next game. For the next week they worked much' harder in preparation for the game with Deep Creek High, and their efforts were ably rewarded in that Portlock swamped Deep Creek, 41 to O. For the second week in a row, we overpowered Great Bridge, 38 to 0. About this time, it looked as if our boys had formed a team that was championship material, and our hopes soared upward with successive wins against Kempsville, Broad Creek and Alexander Park. Then we approached our biggest game of the season with South Norfolk High. Coach Morgan and the boys really prepared for this game, and their practicing showed results, because we defeated South Norfolk for the First time in a number of years by the crushing score of 13 to O. This victory resulted in Portlock being the Class C Champions of the Tidewater district, and as no other school challenged Portlock, it became the Virginia State Champions in the Class C group. This was indeed a high honor for Portlock, and the team could never have reached this goal, without the grand school spirit, the headwork of the boys individually and as a team, and the grand coaching job done by Billy Morgan. Champions of the half State of Virginia, Class C, and we are mighty proud of this great team of 1944! ' E471 na f42 43 Basketball The boys' basketball team, not to be overshadowed by our football champions, had a very successful season winning 18 and losing only 5 games. They emerged into a three-way tie with Holy Trinity and South Norfolk for the Class Cn Eastern State Championship and went into the linals, only to lose to Holy Trinity in a very heartbreaking game with a score 37 to 25. Under the capable coaching of our counselor and principal, Charles Evanosky, the boys developed into a very good team, and as the records show, they played a most impressive game throughout the season. The team consisted of twelve players: Captain Nelson Bondurant, Sammy Peebles, Gilbert Belangia, Charles Simpson, Clyde W'alker, who formed the first team, ably assisted by the following-Billy Yount, Melvin Murphy, Billy Hutchison, Andrew Early, Jack Fentress, Bruce Swink and Jimmy Amburn. The boys played some mighty line ball, and ran up a 12-game winning streak, only to be defeated by Holy Trinity in the linal championship game. Our boys were good losers, however, and showered congratulations upon the champions. YVC will lose three of our starting players through graduation: Bondurant, Peebles and Belangia, but Simpson and VValker will form a nucleus for next yearis team. Basketball remains a most popular sport at Portlock, and we are all mighty proud of the name our boys made for themselves and their school.
