Jerry Lyons, youthful, soft-spoken, but hard-driving coach of the 1963 Viking football team, began his college varsity career at PSC with a record-breaking season. Lyons guided the team to three school records: Best season record- six won, two lost, longest winning streak-five games, first Oregon Col- legiate Conference title in football. How the team felt about its new coach may have been expressed best after the end of the season when a first string tackle commented, When the team met for the first time in the fall, we thought the guy wearing the baseball cap was one of the players. That feel- ing didn't last long. At the close of the season, Lyons lay happily at the foot of a cold shower, brought there by a shouting, happy team after the last game.
