A year is an untidy package bulging with unfinished assignments and clumsily wrapped in dreams. It is hard to walk in another's shoes or upon his path. Only you can plumb the depths and scale the heights of your year. Offered as part of the Freshman Orientation Program, the two-day retreat was planned to give students a friendly, unhurried introduc- tion to college life. Faculty members and student leaders of various campus groups held informal discussions stressing academic, cultural and social aspects of college. Musing over the exciting new vistas of learning, the seemingly many virtues of college ver- sus high school, the freshmen were abruptly brought face to face with academic reality when John Jenkins de- livered the keynote address- How to Take Notes. Recreational facilities at beautiful Camp lvlenucha were by no means overlooked.Softball, tennis, hik- ing, eating, and just plain loafing filled free time between discussions. lt's a long, long, while from fall till December -the next free time for the students. . iwwpmwazim 5.43 , 1,7 1 Lyn: 4 Q, 7 L - , fw fig' N9 ws' L, ' , K' ff f ff . - ' h I ,, X.. 1 1 H X .fax X ' . .af-4 3, 1415 i, 'X S W e 1525 , 2' ,-51' - . - 'SA . The Senate was deprived of its major function, the allocation of student activ- ity fees, and was left with little respon- siloitity. Early concerns of the primarily neophyte Senate were directed at find- ing something to do. A proposal to rewrite the Constitution was the first major effort, a project still incomplete at the beginning of Spring Term. Sev- eral senators developed further inter- est in student politics as was shown by the slate of presidential candidates. ,. , fn: -1-ggznf, J 1: Qtr,-:'sf'v',:?'Gr:f R Q ' '-tg , 4., I ggdyhzugiyv,,:,.1,,,.f 555 Q , f. . 1,11 - 2-1.. . M Every Oregon election helps determine the quality of education Portland State students get, the kind of college they attend, PSC faced double-barreled elections this year. The Oct. 15 referendum was particularly crucialg students and fac- ulty campaigned for support of the l.egislature's tax program. The meas- ure failed, intensifying the colleges omnipresent financial dilemma-how to educate more students with less money. The science building, planned since 1961, was placed on the May primary ballot with two other PSC buildings- the PE and library structures. PSC shared with other state colleges a non- instructional services cutback of 251.5 million. Q' si A ,C 'Y 'dr ..-' Never before a Homecoming like thisl Two activity-filled weeks, launched with selection of a queen and winding up with Metropolitan Melodies. ln between there were on and off-campus luncheons and conferences, an alumni banquet, open house, a play, a rally and bon- fire, and a football game. Commu- nity sharing was stressed in this year's theme, Your College and the Community. Suspense built up at Coronation ceremonies when princesses ffrom leftj Gloria Heckaman, Virginia Hasse, Barbara Burnett, Linda .gd Crawford and Sandy Kraft walked up the aisle. The time was now for the well-kept secret-Gloria Hecka- man would reign as queen of 1963 Homecoming festivities. Queen Gloria, eyes shiny with tears, ac- cepted the honor. She was then presented with a bouquet of roses by Larry Large, ASPSC president. All was not roses, however. There was the thorny problem of scant attendance, accounting for a deficit of about 32000. Some said events were spread too thin over the two weeks-the longest period ever tried. Others said planning was too 4 gd .ff .-NJ' lavish, especially the finale-the dance with its multi-combo enter- tainment. There was something for everybody. For many students, the most mean- ingful events of Homecoming were the rally, bonfire, and football game. Under clear skies at Duni- way Park, the wildly dancing flames of the huge bonfire cast a warm glow overthe rallying crowd. About 300 students attended the informal dance held in the cafeteria after the bonfire. Next day, the team came through with a 19 to 14 win over Southern Oregon. 15 Fashion in the Community, was presented in honor of Queen Gloria and her court. Kathy Anderson fleftj acted as commentator as Cherrie Ann Viggers ftop rightj and Rox- anne Piert modeled fashions for campus, career, and street wear. loan Edwards, Ginny Hasse, Barbara Burnett, Sue Suter, Carol Windust, Mrs. Peter Grundfossen and Shirley Abbott also modeled for fash- ion enthusiasts. On a more serious note, this year's Homecoming featured informal discussions and con- ferences under the heading, The Community Talks with the College. Keynote speaker for the conferences was former Governor Robert D. Holmes. Come take a walk with me through Old Main, chided I-lolmes. The invitation was a challenge to the critics who charged higher education with extravagance in buildings and operational budgets. We must be entirely flexible with higher education, especially in fi- nances, he continued. Static opinion does not produce an- swers to the problem. The windup Metropolitan Melo- dies Formal was a smorgas- bord of music. Music for danc- ing, bythe Gene Rene' Orches- tra. Music for listening, by the Shelly Manne group. And folk music groups with a variety of singers and acts. All in all, four kinds of entertainment going on simultaneously on three floors of College Center made for a colorful and chaotic cli- max. Deficit or no deficit, Chairman Fioy Sampsel Cpage l5j and committee displayed a real sense of showmanship in staging the l-lomecoming. 16 fn Q-fa 'E.?.. . aww? ,- ,if E ' i'. While the SOC game decided the league title in PSC's favor, it was also the first time the Vikings had ever defeated a team from SOC. The score was 19 to 14. Coach Lyons' first year as a college varsity mentor got off to a slow start as his Viks lost a close game to nationally- ranked Lewis and Clark. The other loss was to Linfield, also in the top 20 in national small college polls, But Portland State picked up six wins, finishing the football season holding the longest win streak in the college's history, five games. While the success of the season can be attributed to a team effort, perhaps the name most associated with PSC football in 1963 was Billy Bye-Bye White. At 5'7 and 147 pounds, halfback White skittered over the gridiron for yardage that broke many school records. Also instrumental in victory were quarterback Mike Schrunk, fullback Andy Berkis, end lim Hollingsworth, who was named to the small college All-American team, and tackles lim Gaul, Roy LaZelle and Gary Weber. ' ' ' ' ww, 27 Jerry Lyons, youthful, soft-spoken, but hard-driving coach of the 1963 Viking football team, began his college varsity career at PSC with a record-breaking season. Lyons guided the team to three school records: Best season record- six won, two lost, longest winning streak-five games, first Oregon Col- legiate Conference title in football. How the team felt about its new coach may have been expressed best after the end of the season when a first string tackle commented, When the team met for the first time in the fall, we thought the guy wearing the baseball cap was one of the players. That feel- ing didn't last long. At the close of the season, Lyons lay happily at the foot of a cold shower, brought there by a shouting, happy team after the last game. The allegory concerns two shepherds discussing the value of material goodsg in the ensuing dispute they find their friendship threatened. Lunch Box plays are directed by students in the direct- ing classes, and the cast is from the acting classes. Priscilla Cude directed Aria De Capo. The cast included Bob Kirk, lerry Adams, James loerger, Nola Hale, and Lane W. Tompkins. 38 There were 188 students during the year who came and went, virtually in- visible to the student body-although their very presence here constituted an accolade for Portland State. They were the Peace Corps volunteers sent by the national office because Portland State is recognized as one of only three or four institutions in the na- tion equipped to background them for their work in the Middle East. No one could have foreseen on March 1, 1961, the date the late President John F. Kennedy set up the United States Peace Corps, that Portland State College would play an active part in the program. But this was the year it happened. They came in three groups, very different in personnel and work focus. The first had 39 women and 2 men, ranging in age from 21 to 69. The second had 40 men and only 7 women all between 19 and 80. A third group of 1OO volunteers trained at Portland State during summer of '64. The unrelenting 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. sched- ule maintained by all the volunteers explains why their presence on the PSC campus went unnoticed by most of the student body. ,OGEZCG COl',08 'V1, Mi QQVQWM' 1 . , - .,- li ui- ' .yt The first group bound for Turkey ar- rived in mid-August to begin its pro- gram of concentrated language and area studies under Director lohn O. Dart, professor of geography. The group included specialists in nursing, social work, commercial education and home economics. Even with the incred- ible schedule of 660 hours in 11 weeks, the trainees found time for diversion. There were camping trips, trips up- river, a day at the State Fair, and local entertainment. They whizzed around corners on bicycles loaned them by the City Council. And they participated in a televised panel discussion of the Peace Corps training program. Nor were they neglected by state and gov- ernment officials. One of the keynote addresses was delivered by Oregon's Senator Wayne Morse. He told the trainees that Peace Corps is the van- guard of what our foreign policy should be. At graduation services Nov. 1, PSC trained Turkey-bound Peace Corps members were awarded completion of training certificates. After a 10 day home leave, they left for Ankara, Tur- key, to begin 21 months of service. Iran was the destination for 37 more volunteers in the second PSC training program. The job facing those Peace Corps workers in lran is to help bridge the language gap while at the same time teach improved agricultural meth- ods and self-help programs in the thousands of villages throughout the country. l-low to accomplish this goal in the shortest time with little monetary assistance was the object of the 10 week PSC training program. When queried as to the favorite part of their training most volunteers headed for Iran were quick to name technical studies. The Peace Corps has more than 6000 volunteers serving in 47 countries. Even as this is being written plans are underway for more Peace Corps train- ing programs at PSC. xv vi v- 1 5 al fig? Strindberg's early stream-of- consciousness drama is seldom done anywhere and has never been commercially produced in the United States. The presentation was a Theatre Arts department gesture of recognition to Professor Carl Dahlstrom, emeritus head of PSC's English Department and a foremost authority on Strindberg. The elements of a drama, of a dream, of reality, and of nightmarish illusion are enmeshed and indis- tinguishable in Strindberg's fand the audience'sj search for truth. The only form is that of a dream, and is held together only by the consciousness of the dreamer. The production was in the flexible Idea Theatre-where the play occupies most of the space, and the audience is almost surrounded by the action. Carol lvlorgareidge played the daughter of Indra, lohn Shields, the lawyer, Ernie Klostermann, the student, and Kim Stanley, the poet. Q 1 K in . .X '5 7. VI' ,QW :R '11 , Hlfxrw X H-'t.5., ,. Peter Kenyanjui, another PSC junior, told about The nature of the new government. He said, not everyone is ready to accept the responsibility under a free constitu- tion. The students agreed that prob- lems faced Kenya, but, as with every new nation, there must be a period of gaining confidence. Mayor Schrunk emphasized that students training in the United States will one day go back to help solve Kenya's problems. 49 , 50 Christmas was everywhere, but at Portland State the spirit of Christmas hovered politely in the background, awaiting a nod from students. First there was dead week, then finals' week. Somehow, someone found time to decorate 10 of the 25 windows in College Center. And here and there holly and baubles brightened desk tops and doorways. But mostly Christmas just marked time .... And now our tests are finished. Complete, your many chores. Come in, bring Christmas with you, The next few days are yours. At the end of the year the six national groups were active but without official recognition. The conflict began in the fall when President Millar halted rush activities. The issue centered on rejection of four candidates for rush-two of them Negro girls. In a written statement, the sororities contended, the suspension is, in effect, an ultimatum to all of the sororities to admit one or both girls mentioned to membership. Millar said he did not have demonstra- ble proof of discrimination and was not looking for it, but the obligation of the sororities has always been to demon- strate beyond a reasonable doubt a policy and practice of non-discrimina- tion. After six months of deliberation by a faculty committee, the ultimatum which came with Faculty Senate and presidential endorsement was - rein- statement ofthe sororities but only on condition that the local chapters be free to select members without alum- nae veto. Correspondence between national officers and President Millar led to disaffiliation of the chapters. The local groups, with the exception of Tri Delta which decided to close out its chapter, have continued with rush and other activities not connected with PSC. w F I E 1 1 we W lm' ,-3' I gif! .. ,Ig , 1 in , 63' 4 a I 65? il 3 n-951 4 Rae- .2 1 f ? 23? r7f'fN+',if.:f! f fri f 5 4 r . .X 2 Fwy . 1 ,Q fi L' wi.. :W - Er 'fx 15-'ill-Ei gg -4: '- , ce: wgw ,.: 3. It was for the direction of Asher Wilson-and for I Diane Heater as Viola, William Tate as Orsino, Stephen Smith as Feste, Gary Adams as Aguecheek, Ralph Zusman as Valentine, Gail Kaveny as Maria, Sharyl Oliver as Olivia. And for English professor Fred Waller, who played the consummate and yellow- gartered ass, Malvolio, as though he had found his spiritual home in farce. ' The applause was for the ensemble music researched and rescored by Robert Crowley from lvlorley's First Book of Consort Lessons, with Shakespeare's words underlaid to the tunes. And for the unusual fit up stage, an adaptation from a design first used on London's Royal Exchange. And for the gorgeous, subtly symbolic and comic costumes created by Mary Collins out of ltaly's, not EngIand's, 16th century. PSC retained the OCC crown with ease. The team score for the meet was: PSC-79, SOC-62, OTI-49, EOC-46, and OCE-36. The Viks claimed three indi- vidual weight titles in the meet. At 115 pounds, lim Cumpston pinned his man at 7:57 in the match, at 123 pounds, Rich Green decisioned his man 13-4, and at 157 pounds, Les Brown decis- ioned his man 7-O. Fred Sieberthal picked up the Vik's only consolation title at 167 pounds. The District 1 and 2 NAIA was little more than a farce as the Viks scored 78 points and were 45 points ahead of the nearest contenders- Lewis and Clark and Eastern Oregon College with 33 points each. Team scores were: PSC-78, LC-33, EOC-33, SOC-28, WWC-24, OCE-19, CWC-18, Whitman- 17, and Linfield-8. Individual weight championships taken by PSC were: lim Cumpston, 115 pounds, Bich Green, 123, Bon Calhoun, 130, Bon Dexter, 137, Larry Bender, 147, and Les Brown, 157. .W,,.,..,,.,-- .-4 ,,.,-0' ,W 1 ' '-. High scorer at the tournament was Mike Huston with a 187 average-team average was 181. Si i One of the rewards of setting world records is claiming the same for your country. When Americans scaled Mt. Everest, the flag was raised from the earth's highest point. When two men took the Navy bathyscaph Trieste to a depth of over seven miles below Pacific waters in January, 1960, the flag was pinned to the ocean floor at the deep- est point of penetration by man. The two men operating the Trieste on the record dive were Navy Lt. Don Walsh and lacgue Picard, one of the designers of the bathyscaph. ln Janu- ary l.t. Walsh visited Portland State. Walsh, illustrating his experiences in deep-sea research and exploration with color slides, referred to the sea as a vast nutrient soup that could be tapped to help underfed countries. l-le stressed that while governments are beginning to realize the oceans are the earth's last frontier, they are slow to establish national oceanography pro- grams. lt is conceivable that in the near future international competition for inner space may develop into a rivalry like the race into outer space. For the State Board of Higher Educa- tion this was an austere, election-filled year. Quashed by the Oct. 15 tax refer- endum, the board found itself with little money or public sympathy. In a hostile milieu the board, first chaired by Wil- liam Walsh, then Charles Holloway, fought another electoral battle May 15 for its 3530 million building program. On the ballot were PSC's library, science, and PE buildings. Other expansion plans, all unfunded, were approved by the board for its seven colleges. li, ,lqll Compared to years when vociferous protest, walk-outs, even resignations prevailed in student government, this year's political crossing seemed rela- tively calm. Larry Large and lim Carr held steady at the helm, though casu- alties ran high in rougher waters of Senate and Student Activities. Dis- agreement and frustration flourished but in-fighting was kept down. Some- one said if you made a fist, under whose nose would you shake it? The '64 student elections zeroed in be- fore Winter had lifted its icy feet from the Park Blocks-hitherto Portland State's outdoor campus headquarters. Missing from this year's campaign were tree-top banners, soap box ora- tory and park bench deliberation. On February 12, Paul Pinegar and lim Gil- bert took the two top posts from Bill Weissert and lohn Decker. This little truism figured big in the episodic story of PSC's brief and stormy but fertile past. lt was motivation for the valiant efforts that kept alive the concept of PSC against overwhelming odds of flood, fire, indifference and opposition. ln the discouraging years of deadlocked progress, an enrollment that moved forward at an exciting clip-that tripled in the school's nine years as a degree-granting institution-was dramatic proof that the need was there from the beginning. Celebrations opened with a luncheon honoring 17 members of the PSC faculty who were on the original Vanport staff. Whimsically, a past yet so young it can break bread with the present and plan vigorously for the future. In the opening convocation address, ASPSC president Larry Large assessed the past and the present- drew a parallel-progress is a fighting word. Both Mayor Schrunk and Chancellor Floy Lieuallen predicted PSC will soon be the largest unit in the State System. Bob Ziemer, president of the Alumni Association, took the occasion to present a S500 scholarship to the Athletic Department. And at this time, Sue Suter was presented with the Vanguard award by Dick Johnston, Vanguard managing editor. The well seasoned and traveled PSC Madrigal Singers entertained with two numbers. Wielding the silvered ceremonial sword reserved for the occasion Larry Large, assisted by vice president lim Carr, scored admirably on the green and white tiered birthday cake topped with the digit 84 M I Q I I 3,5 u l 'f www V M 'Gi f '4' f u....,,,f...- Q ali- inn 1 3 The unbeatable threesome, coffee, cookies, and conversation set the pace for a successful get-together of moth- ers, daughters, and faculty advisors, hostessed by AWS in the Browsing Library, February 12. Stressing the role of women in higher education, Dr. Dorris Lee, Portland State education professor, told the group, the left-handed approach of women to careers rather than male prejudice is the biggest barrier against full partnership in the business world. Women should pursue careers geared to their real abilities even if this leads them into so-called masculine fields. 'flirt ,W Employing Coach Sharkey Nelson's complex, multi-option offensive pat- terns, the 1963-64 Viking basketball squad finished second in the Oregon Collegiate Conference while compiling a 10-15 mark for the season. The Viks pounded OCC Champion Eastern Ore- gon three times. Nelson, an erstwhile protege of redoubtable Hank lba, char- acterized the squad as a spirited, bounce-back team. PSC's two contests with highly-rated College of Puget Sound illustrates this point. One night the Loggers bounced the Viks 99-69, the following night the Loggers squeezed by with a 67-65 last second victory. ,ne- eG Mmm, Us ,4j,g ', ff ff. 1, . Though the harpsicord has little identi- fication with current popular tastes in music, the concert attracted-and pleased-over 500 persons. Two of the three music critics with local news media rated the concert an out- standing artistic success. The third critic, while recognizing Kirkpatrick as one ofthe world's finest harpsicordists, was less than enthusiastic about the instrument itself. In his opinion, the harpsicord is capable of pitifully little dynamic contrast and practically no light and shade. 9-4 gal X x'..... Pakastanis would rather be friendly with Communist China than lndia, explained former West Pakistan High Court Justice Abdul Hamid at a February lecture. Adroitly dodging stu- dent questions, Hamid said Pakistan and lndia originally split because of religious conflict. U. S. aid to India has made Pakistan's foreign policy a little more than irritating to India. lndia's Madame Fiajan Nehru lectured at Portland State in March. She by-passed the feminine preroga- tive of talk on fashions or native customs and drove deep to the heart of lndia's problems, the struggles of a fledgling democracy in a part ofthe world especially threatened by Communism. For the first time in its 16 years as a democracy, India is being forced to de- emphasize programs for education, health, and indus- trial growth in order to build up border defenses against Communist China. Describing her nation as a vital crossroads for democracy, Madame Nehru said should India fail, the vvhole of Southeast Asia and maybe Africa will feel repercussions. ,ij-Sf Ni , A A Student publications are the key to communications at Portland State Col- lege and at the same time provide an outlet for journalistic, literary, and graphic talents. Bachelor at the PSC-sponsored Winter Carnival in February. lniti- ated at Mt. Hood in 1956, the annual trek to upper-pastures has devel- oped into a big-time production- the largest intercollegiate winter competition in the U. S. Grown too big for Hood, the Carnival moved to Bend in 1962. lfthis year's explosion-from 2000 last year-is symbolic of future growth, either the programming or the map of Bend will need extensive revamp- ing. A steady stream of collegians flowed into Bend all day Friday. ln the stepped up holiday tempo, they reveled continuously, ate when they thought about it, slept hardly at all-literally intoxicated by the prospect of three sun-drenched winter days-in mountain air with the tang of new-brewed ale. Carnival directors Dave Whitehead and Dave Yaden greeted the first- nighters jam-packed in the Bend High auditorium, then promptly yielded the floor to the inter-school talent contest, which was won by the Weekenders, comic tolk group from Lewis and Clark. Ending the contest on a regal note, Corky Demler of Willamette University was chosen 1964 Winter Carnival Queen. Still teary-eyed, Queen Corky ruled over the informal warm-up dance when hundreds gy- rated to the rock-and-roll music of Portland's Coachmen. u NX-R inygv df r9i 'Y al . ,,,.,,. W ww:-' ' , ' v ' -...ff I- f ' f While the emphasis was on fun -and no motive is more noble- there was also the serious, brisker purpose of the meet- the competition. Participating in racing events under the di- rection of Olympics star Bob Johnson were several top ski- ing teams, all having champion- ship standing. Sierra College's Thor Mjoen won the coveted Skimeister trophy, while Uni- versity of Nevada barely edged past Sierra to take the overall team competion. PSC freshman Judy Tatreau swept to victory in the women's unclassified giant slalom. And furthermore, PSC placed first in the snow-shoe race fCharles Auch and Margie Koppenj, in the tug-of-war CTKEJ, and typically perhaps, in snow sculpture-a hapless skier nose-dived into a snow bank, anatomy and skis thrust into space. Everywhere there was an excess of people. Bach- elor's facilities were strained past capacity. They ran out of spaghetti at Bend after feeding 1200, and the Wayfarers, popu- lar RCA folk recording group, had to ditto their performance for an overflow crowd. Unfortunately over-exuberance got somewhat out of hand bringing about police intervention and foreshadowing the future. Bend residents, uneasy and running scared after the Seaside inci- dent, have asked for and been assured of stricter controls next year. All day Sunday, even after the setting sun had reddened the snowy peaks, sounds and sighs of departure echoed through the crisp mountain air. The weekend had slipped through fingers like sand-leaving only things remem- bered-tall tales to spin to the folks back home .... Slalom till next year. Courthouse in protest of hearings by the Subvers- ive Activities Control Board against two men alleged to have violated the law by failing to register as Commu- nists. The marchers claimed the Mc- Carran Act under which the SACB operates is unconstitutional. The diversified procession included young, old, bewhiskered, apple- cheeked, unkempt, starch-bosomed, knowing, and naive individuals. Admit- tedly, they were largely from Reed and PSC. City news media were on the job with wall to wall coverage. Pictures wig- wagged from TV screens. Bulletins zeroed in on Radio. And the student image slipped heaven knows how many cogs-confirmed when the barometer of public opinion, letters to the editor, registered storm warnings. Some stu- dents felt the press had unfairly played up the beatnik and college-age angle. There were even subtle hints of left- footedness, especially in letters col- umns. lf students hadn't been the sub- ject of abject scrutiny in the nearing election, the incident might have sput- tered out like a penny firecracker. ,i k e 41 C 'ff A 4 ,. -1- ,, ff' ,-: ,l ' ., i, fn ' i 1 . NN i 'Jw W 1 W Portland State's Science Division, shoe-horned into Old Main with physical education and theatre arts, has been modern technology in a ramshackle setting. The new science building, like urban renewal for a city, offers answers to the division's crowding and miserable equipment- primarily because it has more space. Despite tenement quality facilities, significant research and extensive teaching is done in the 52-year-old former Lincoln high school building. PSC has grown in stature as a public health research center. A S400,000 federal financed environmental health floor in the long-awaited new building is expected to bring some S500,000 in other research grants. The late Dr. Clyde Johnson of chemistry said research is vital to education of students and faculty alike as well as contributing to community economic well-being. fi, rfiz' iii . -.mfr . .ma Q4 4-if I mv, 11 , .. 7 '12ZiI?f H, -r 5? . The pro- gram is the only federally-sponsored undergraduate Center in Arabic lan- guage studies in the United States. It affords interested students an oppor- tunity to train as Middle East area specialists by combining a series of prescribed language and area courses with the major of their choice. Most helpful in the language training-which is the core of the program-is the eighty-five booth language laboratory, perhaps the finest in the Northwest. Much of the responsibility of keeping the program attuned to ever-changing world conditions and demands lies with Center Director Frederick J. Cox, pro- fessor of history. More than 300 stu- dents have studied at the Center since 1959. ln that time a total of 395,874 in scholarships and grants, earmarked for study in Lebanon, Israel, and Egypt as well as in the U. S., has been awarded to outstanding trainees. On the strength of MESC, two Peace Corps contingents bound for Middle East duties were graduated from PSC this year. And there are more to come! New this year was the Middle East Festival, sponsored by the Center and exposing the school at large to the warmth and charm of old-world cul- ture. There were exhibits of arts and crafts, including rich jewel-toned rugs steeped in tradition. Turkish coffee and Middle East pastries were there for the sampling. Gregg Nickerson was Berenger whose uncomfortable and alcoholic struggle to adjust to the narrow, unthinking conformity of his job and the town, hardens into immunization against the herd seduction. Carol Morgareidge was Daisy, l3erenger's love and the last to go piteously running from his arms to follow the rhinoceros' bellowing which to her finally has become singing, lean, the always on time, grey-flannel suit friend of Berenger who was almost the first to turn into a rhinoceros was played by lack Shields. Dudard was William Tate, Botard was Steven Smith, and The Logician, Ernie Klostermann. Others in the cast included Nicci McBroom as the waitress, Charles Hinkle and Gail Caveny as the grocer and his wife, Gary Smith as the Old Gentleman, Stormie Lineberger as the housewife. Paul Staver was the cafe proprietor, Ralph Zusman, Mr. Papillon, Nancy Drew, Mrs. Boeuf, Dave Collins a fireman, and Paul Stover, the Little Old Man. Kermit Shafer did the stage design with costumes by Mary Collins l and her student crew. 146 . .vin . i ,, ,QE J , 3 ff? 2 s -. y .- x K1 ' 0, W -f. Under the influence of the flambuoyant theme, with its connotations of Left-Bank dress and atmospherefun and laughter had a head start. Bearded men in striped T shirts and gartered Coeds in tight short skirts crawled through pseudo-sewers to the splash-in area of the dance floor. There quick as the flip of a girl's sassy hips, dancing got underway to the salty music of the Scavengers-with hootenanny style intermission, garter and beard con- tests, and the door prize ot a door. Some will remember the parties and music they held, the old faces that were there, and the faces seen once. The Monastery, the Village, the places on Hall, on Madison and Market had known better days, but never louder nights. They have left with an echo, with the people that come and go, but much remains at the cycle's center There are new parties in other rooms, new buildings for a new kind of permanence, and always dancing in the dawn of a new day.
