DR. JEAN P. BLACK Librarian LIBRARY Portland State's Z-million-dollar library was formally dedicated October Z3 though its doors Were actually opened in January, 1960. Functional and modern in design, the library is operated on the open-shelf principle which al- lows the individual direct contact With the circula- tion books. The library is organized in three divisions: Ed- ucation, Science and Social Science, and Humani- ties, each with a specialist librarian to assist stu- dents and faculty. There are seven on the Techni- cal Processes staff, the unseen department respon- sible for securing, recording, and preparing the many varied materials circulated by the library. At the present time additions to the library's collection of nearly 64,000 volumes are averaging 1,000 a month. PSC's graduation classes have contributed to the equipment of the library. The Class of l957 presented a microfilm reader and the Class of l958 added a microcard reader. The handsome table- type exhibit case in the foyer was a gift of l959,s class.

GEORGE C. HOFFMANN Chairman, Social Science Division SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Joseph Blumel, Social Science secretary, and Norman Greene. Two major expansions of Port- land State curricula in 1960-61 were recognitions of the quality and growt'h of the Social Science Division under its chairman, Dr. George Hoffmann. Authorization and a special ap- propriation to offer a graduate lev- el program in social work came from the legislature. The course, first graduate degree offering at PSC authorized by t'he State Board of Higher Education, will provide professional training not available before in any Oregon institution. Second recognition of Portland State's role in the Higher Educa- tion System lifted the business ad- ministration curriculum from de- partmental to full divisional status. Dr. Donald Parker, a former PSC faculty member, will return in September to head this division. Included in t'he Social Science Division are: psychology, sociology, history, geography, anthropology, political science and economics.

DEAN OF STUDENTS Portland State offers to its students, through academic divisions and stu- dent government, a complement of ac- tivities. Nearly all activities are wholly student promoted. Fine Arts Festival, Homecoming, Winter Carnival, and Anniversary Day are a few of these. Many others, musical offerings and dramatic productions, student publica- tions, debate and art presentations, are sponsored by the academic departments and various organizations. Organizations play a part in provid- ing extra-curricular and co-curricular outlets for the student body. Portland State hosts nearly 50 interests, reli- gious, service, and social groups. The college, through the Student Ac- tivities Office and the Associated Stu- dents, Welcomes additional groups, en- courages the increased student partici- pation in campus-related affairs.
