HUMANIT IES DEPARTMEN Within the Division of Humanities lie the disciplines generally referred to as The Arts-Eng- lish and American 1it'erature, foreign languages, mu- sic, philosophy, speech and theater, architecture and the sculptural and graphic arts. Every PSC stu- dent comes into contact with this staff through re- quired work in English. Dr. Hoyt Franchere, division chairman, and his staff have been very active in expansion of course offerings. The Foreign Language Department is one in which registration is climbing and new offerings being added under the impetus of the new aware- ness of America's great need for language compe- tence in meeting international responsibilities. Through foreign languages Humanities has been deeply involved in the relatively new inter-disci- plinary program of Near East Studies. This and one other certificate program, Urban Development, are concentrations of offerings around single prob- lem areas where specialists are needed. Development of a minor course program in jour- nalism was a 1961 inauguration of the Humanities Division.

Portland State awards the bachelor of arts and bachelor bf science degrees in 15 areas of the liberal art's and sciences, in Gen- eral Studies, and in four professional areas: Teacher Education, Business Administration, Applied Science, and Social Work. The latter is the college's recently authorized and first graduate-level program and is in the organizational stage now. Teacher Education is the oldest of the professional programs at the college. The Education Division under Dir. Willard B. Spalding, prepares the third largest number of teachers among all Oregon institutions, public and private. Within the State System of Higher Education, the approximately 250 graduates closely approaches the numbers receiving education degrees at the two largest institutions, University of Oregon and Oregon State. As the oldest of the College's five academic divisions, educa- tion has the longest list of alumni. Its former students are staffing elementary and high schools all over the country. The Department of Health and Physical Education is under t'he Education Division. BAUMGARTNER Chairman, Division of Science Executive Assistant Pressures of expanding -scientific knowledge, along with the demands of sheer numbers of students, are changing the science picture at Portland State as dramatically as any other division of the college. Authorization of a 52,225,000 science building which is scheduled for opening two years from now was the most signifi- cant event of the year for Dr. Thurman Peterson and his staff as well as a symbol of Portland State's total development. The Applied Science Department inaugurated a year ago under Dr. Harry White places the college in the vanguard of a new scientific training field. The program, a combination of engineering and basic science, bridges a widening gap in American technological education, fitting its graduates especially for technological research in electronics, automation systems, nuclear power, astronautics, product development and design.
