In Mr. Henry Whopper Deetien, esteemed member of our History' department. Mr. Deetien, graduate of Cheverus High School, attended Bridgton Academy, received his Bachelor of Science degree from Colby College '31' and his Mas- ter's degree in Education from the University of New Hampshire. Mr. Deetien taught from 1932-1936 at Cheverus High School, where he coached football, basketball, and baseball. He then taught at Sanford High School also coaching football and basketball. After spend- ing four years with the Military, Mr. Deetien returned to Sanford and from there came to the hallowed halls of P.H.S. in 1947, ioining the History Dept. and Mrs. Carola Cameron Guth rie, stylish, attractive, and much respected member of the English dept. Mrs. Guthrie received her Bachelor of Science degree from Gorham State Teachers' College' in 1947, her Master of Arts from New York University in 1953, and her Master's Intermediate from N.Y.U. in 1954. She is a member of the Portland, Maine, and National Education Associations, the Maine and New England Council of Teachers of English and the College Club of Portland. Her outside interests include her lakeside home and love of travel. Mr. James E. Flanagan, for- mer math teacher, and football coach, now Principal of Adult Education. Mr. Flanagan graduated from P.H.S. in 1923 and attended Holy Cross College where he graduated in 1933. He attended graduate school at the Univ. of Maine, Boston University, Univ. of Connecticut, and Gorham State College. Mr. Flanagan came to P.H.S. in 1936 as a foot- ball coach and teacher, left to spend 3 years in the U.S. Navy, and returned to us in 1945. ln 1964, he was elected Principal of Adult Education, and he

Appreciation coaching basketball. Mr. Deetien has the distinction of having coached Portland's Little Boy Blues when they were Maine State Champs in l95O. Mr. and Mrs. Deetien plan to travel extensively upon his retirement. There is so much we could say about Mr. Deetien and so little space. We must be content to wish him Bon Voyage, Godspeed, and many happy years ahead. He will be missed at Portland High, but long remembered. Coach Deetien demonstrates passing funda- mentals. Mrs. Guthrie's pleasant manner, and able teaching will be a loss to P.H.S. and we wish for her the best the future has to offer. ' Mrs. Guthrie with one of her pupils. instituted a high school program for adults in 1965. T He coordinated a program of inservice Training for New England Adult Teachers at the University of Connecticut. Mr. Flanagan has had a long and varied career in sports and athletics. He has made a great impression on innumerable graduates of P.H.S. We express our appreciation in our own small way to a man who deserves much. Good luck, Mr. Flanagan, and many ' more happy years. Mr. Flanagan receives an award.
