FACULTY MP. -...-----.----.... SGD A high school like Portland needs a capable man to lead it. Mr. Hansen had a tough act to follow this year but he has served admirably well during his first year as principal of Portland High School. He has encouraged and supported change this year. He allowed the students to have a smoking area and he has tried many different ideas to untangle the administrative knots of absenteeism and tardiness. A glimpse of his stern face perhaps sends chills down the spines of underclassmen, but the depart- ing seniors who have come to know Mr. Hansen have grown to like and respect him. Mr. Whitmore The task of a disciplinarian is never an easy one. He must carry the burden of alleviating chaos in the halls of our beloved PHS. Nevertheless, Mr. Richard L. Whit- more has fulfilled this responsibility most efficiently. We sincerely thank Mr. Whitmore for his part in help- ing to maintain the fine reputation which Portland High School has held throughout the years. Harriers Continue Tradition The P.H.S. cross-country team continued the recent tradition of high finishes this year. Coach Ed Bogdanovich's harriers went 9-2 in league competition to snare third in their conference. They went on to out-distance Deering in the Southwesterns, finishing second, but were a disappointed fifth in the State meet. Gary Thibldeau and Jim Langella were the aces for the Blue Berets this year. Curt Jones and Chris Dinan were usually close behind in the three-four positions. Rod Wardwell, Bob Rice, and Steve Hanson also filled maior scoring roles. Bob Pulkinnen, Dave Knapp, and Mike Johbson completed an unusually deep team. The iunior varsity's season was also outstanding. Their only loss was due to a wrong turn by the top six, who were at the time leading the race. Coaches - Left to Right: Mr. Dana Weeks, Mr. Phil Jones, Mr. Gerald Davis. The blue dogs came back strong in the next two games defeating Sanford 12-0 and crushing Westbrook 34-22. The Thanksgiving game proved to be a tremendous game with PHS coming through with its best defensive effort of the year. Each player was a great asset to the team. Goals were scored by several players, and the players showed their skills in strong drives, a great defense, and team spirit. The Bulldogs made the finals during the Christmas tournament and captured seventh spot for the Western Maine tournament. Coach John McGuire formed the players into a well- working team. Their defense-oriented game was very effective. This brand of basketball utilized the ball-han- dling skills of Captain Neil Taliento. Juniors Danny Wohl, Darryl Mcllwain, and Jonathan Tomshick contrib- uted a lot to the scoring and rebounding. Veteran Dave Reed helped in all departments. Guided efficiently by the photography abilities of John Zeitman, a great number of students became aware of the interesting field of photography. Students were taught the basic photography skills which include developing film, printing, and developing photographs. In addition, some unusual photography effects were tried.
