In a school the size of PHS there are innumerable details that must be taken care of, and to do this requires great patience. There is no dearth of understanding among the office staff. Miss Mary Conroy, Mrs. Iola Bloom- er. and Mrs. jean Ney are ever ready with advice and concern for every- oneis problems. Courtesy, cheerful- ness, and dependability are their trademarks. NVith the addition of these new mem- bers to the staff, more counseling facilities are avail- able to Portland High students. Specialization has been the keynote. Mr. Philip Dennis. head of the department. and Mr. john Conroy specialize in non-college course guidance. Mrs. Doris Damren, the educational adviser, counsels students on college choices and admissions procedures. She has also been a very great influence in getting many schol- arships for PHS students. Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt. the counselor for freshmen. 'lids them in getting adjusted to high school life. The Business Department has been instrumental in getting after school jobs for many of the upperclassmen. Seniors Leave Enviable Record june 1960 seemed a long way off to entering freshmen four years ago, but the time has passed quickly, leaving behind it many memories of hard work, joy, satisfaction, and disappointment. The members of the Class of 1960 have come to the end of their high school career. Neal Cobisi, Peter Demakis, and joe Ferrante as co-captains of the football team, marched to victory with Dick Kelley, Louie Cayallaro, Paul McFarland, Ardie Kochian, john Pompeo, Archie Ciobbi, Leroy Stover, Byron Bickett, Tony Mancini, Tom Wilson, XX'ally Frances, Frank Soule, Dennis O'Donnell, and jim Beal. Basketeers included Byron Bickctt, Archie Ciohbi, Ardie Kochian, Greg Tselikis, and Don Harkins. Traeksters were Don McPhee, jerry Crommett, Norm Cleaves, and Mike McGill. Swimmers were Bill NIcCalmon, Bob Doucette, Tom Mulhern, Andy Morey, Gary Clark. and Don Hooper. Tennis men were Sylvanus Doughty, and Bichard and Jonas Nliller. Senior band members included Don Vl'hite, Gene Hanson, Don Hanna, and Roberta Gomez. Morale rousing seniors were Annette Ciriello, Betty Anderson, Sue XYarren. Boxes for countries overseas and volunteering at the Portland Red Cross Chapter House are two of the projects the cluh undertakes. The club, under the direction of Miss Theresa johnson. also aids local charity organizations and hospitals. The club president for this year was Lucretia Nappi a junior. This program is carried out with the co- operation of the Maine Savings Bank and it gives the girls valuable experi- ence which may be helpful in future jobs. Mrs. Delia Page is the adviser for the girls. Military Day for seniors is held to help acquaint the students with the various branches of the armed ser- vices. Talks are given by each repre- sentative and then there is the op- portunity to ask questions.
