BASKETBALL The 1955-'56 season scarred slowly with Portland traveling to Berlin to lose 60-58. In the second game of the season, they lost to Ellsworth at home. After losing two more straight to East Hampton and Sufiield, the outlook was grim. Then, as if by miracle, the team started to hit. Towns, a transfer student, was hitting with deadly regularity, Bastura was also making his presence felt. Quigley, back in the lineup after having recovered from a sprained ankle, was once again scoring and grabbing the rebounds. On December 20, the team went to Bloomfield for an afternoon game and won, 74-68. After that, victory followed victory, with wins over Durham, Bacon, Canton, Berlin, Suffield, Bloomfield, Bacon, and Canton. These were interrupted only by losses to East Hampton, Windsor Locks, and Ellsworth. From the disastrous start, Portland recovered to break JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Row 1: Coach St. Sauveur. twice the school scoring record, which stood at 88 points, by defeating Bacon, 92-57, and Bloomheld, 95-67. Portland had two players who were among the five top scorers in the Central Valley League. Towns, after leading the League for a while, finished second with a total of 361 points and a game high of 42 against Berlin. He was followed by Bastura, who had a total of 309 points and a game high of 57 against Bloomfield. Although the Portland Brownies were not eligible for the tournament. the type of basketball they played more than compensated for this disappoint- ment.
