JUDITH TURNER udy reliable loyes to 7 type friendly enthus good listener giggle! argumentatiye future amb t 0 marriage pa tial to a 4 Soto capable art student a of the thing i f 1 '- it Ci' CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN YEAR Our freshman year which began on September 9 1955 is one vue shall never forget Our class officers veere lohn Hodg president Paul Ghent yice president oan DeGraff secretary and Gloria Lapadula treasurer Iohn Smedick Ioseph Murphy and Thomas Hadden were our Student Council representatives In November as part of our initiation vie polished shoes for the seniors cleaned their lockers and bowed to them when yer me met them Later in the year vie attended our hrst high school formal dance the Santa Claus Ball sponsored by the Girls Club SOPHOMORE YEAR The officers we elected this year were Paul Ghent president' Gloria Lapadula vice- president' Exelyn Maher secretary' Andrea osephson treasurer' and jack Hodge and Frank Kazeroid Student Council representatives. This was an eventful year for us. We vselcomed a neva superintendent Mr. Walter Pulsifer. Gail Miles judy Turner Es Brosseau and Elly Mays became majorettes' and Art Herrick began playing varsity basketball. In December, the gym was transformed into a Winter Wonderland' for the Santa Claus Ball. In the spring, the Girls Club sponsored a sports banquet for all the athletic teams in the school. At this time the boys received their aviards. JUNIOR YEAR This was an important year in our high school careers. Our biggest thrill was the arrival of our class rings in October. Also in October our class had a hayride followed by a party at Barbara Munn's house. Members of our class who participated in the local American Legion Oratorical Contest were jack Hodge, Andrea josephson, ROBERT UNIKEWICZ rosy cheeks Bo me and my Chevie ready for a good time good looking bright eyes sense of humor lucky always with three letter man Dick and Ray Yeh? are always in his wa Rock n Roll fan Where re without Paul Leo we going? not a worry in the Where are the world Work? Never heard V' -'k ARLENE WOODWARD Sweet and gentle a smile for everyone enviable curls nimble with the thimble typing whiz willing worker good natured sparkling eyes truer friend is hard to find I C plans nursing Variety is the spice of life Xl! Fvclyn Maher William Harris and Harvey Auster Evelyn Maher won this contest und went on to mn the county contest and later competed in the state contest Pat Limpini joe Murphy jackie Emond and Harvey Auster went to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference in New York for three days as representatives of the Prattler As a fund raising venture our class sold greeting cards and writing paper The last social event of the school year was the unior Senior Prom which had as its theme A japanese Tea Garden SENIOR YEAR Leading us through our last and most important year were Paul Ghent president' Evelyn Maher vice-president' Marie Chiabrero secretary' and ohn Anderson treasurer. We sponsored a number of successful fund-raising projects. The annual Magazine drixe led by Pat Zampini and ack Hodge netted us approximately 81600. Pats team raised the most money, and acks team entertained them at a picnic at Hurd Park. The top salesmen in the drive were Frank Kazeroid Terry uigley David Umba and john Klauzenberg. Christmas seemed a bit gayer this year because gifts were wrapped in the attractive Christmas paper which we sold. Selling candy to students was another business venture of ours. After a Halloween party at Gail Miles' house we got up at 4:00 a.m. to wash windows a traditional senior good-will project. Quigley, D. Umba, A. Towns, j. Mahoney, G. Westergren. BASKETBALL The 1955-'56 season scarred slowly with Portland traveling to Berlin to lose 60-58. In the second game of the season, they lost to Ellsworth at home. After losing two more straight to East Hampton and Sufiield, the outlook was grim. Then, as if by miracle, the team started to hit. Towns, a transfer student, was hitting with deadly regularity, Bastura was also making his presence felt. Quigley, back in the lineup after having recovered from a sprained ankle, was once again scoring and grabbing the rebounds. On December 20, the team went to Bloomfield for an afternoon game and won, 74-68. After that, victory followed victory, with wins over Durham, Bacon, Canton, Berlin, Suffield, Bloomfield, Bacon, and Canton. These were interrupted only by losses to East Hampton, Windsor Locks, and Ellsworth. From the disastrous start, Portland recovered to break JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Row 1: Coach St. Sauveur. twice the school scoring record, which stood at 88 points, by defeating Bacon, 92-57, and Bloomheld, 95-67. Portland had two players who were among the five top scorers in the Central Valley League. Towns, after leading the League for a while, finished second with a total of 361 points and a game high of 42 against Berlin. He was followed by Bastura, who had a total of 309 points and a game high of 57 against Bloomfield. Although the Portland Brownies were not eligible for the tournament. the type of basketball they played more than compensated for this disappoint- ment. Arr Herrick captained the team of six returning veterans and fourteen new men and substitutes from the previous year. Though missing experienced players, the team ended the season with 5 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties, The team scored 21 goals as compared with 15 goals scored against them.
