For your untiring devotion to your God-given tasks, for your deep understanding, for your wise counsel and your inspiring example we shall be always grateful. You have helped each one of us on that Way more than we could ever express. We thank God that we are better pre- pared to face life because you have helped prepare us. Our prayers will ever follow you as you continue giving others the same guidance you gave us. FROM THE EDITOR . . . Once again the Searchlight is here! We, as the Searchlight staff sincerely hope that this annual, not only will bring back memories for you, and that it is the best yet , but that it will be a good testimony of what Christian High is really like. Each of us have earnestly prayed that it will be another method of influencing young people to come to Christian High, and as a result become better prepared to live a victorious life for Christ. Our theme this year is the Christian pathway. Jesus said that the first step to entering life is to go through the straight and narrow gate . From here on He says that the way is not easy-the road is narrow and straight, but, more important than any earthly troubles we could have, are the spiritual joys and blessings along the way and finally eternal life at the end of the road. The last gates through which we will ever pass will be those of the new jerusalem. May God help each one of us to continue in His Way so that our happiness and joy will be complete when we face Christ on that wonderful day! Education Harold Steinhauer I Daniel Hager Chairman BUIMIHX Commute? Chairman Student Aid Committee MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT- In the Portland Christian School we seek to develop the three phases of each human individual, viz: body, soul, and spirit QI Thes. 5:23j as God intended. Through our body we are world conscious, able to move from place to place, our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost: through our soul ,we are self conscious, able to absorb the knowledge pre- sented: while with the spirit we become God conscious when we come into the right relationship with Jesus Christ. Then we have that wisdom which is from above Uas. 3217, and become complete in Him CCOI. 2:10J. Failure to recognize and develop the spiritual in our youth leaves them without wisdom to cope with the problems of this age. But at Portland Christian School it is our aim to bring each individual student into such a relationship with God through Christ that he will be able to see God's handiwork through every subject studied. And since by Him all things consist and in Him we live and move and have our being , we can have that peace that passeth understanding . We seek to give a complete education that equips our graduates to face the problems of life, and though the storm clouds may gather, we place our hand in the hand of Him who knows the end from the beginning and doeth all things well . Thus equipped we can face life calmly and without fear. GEORGE H. ATKINSON President of the Board COOLEY-WOLSBORN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY Homes Near the Christian Schools l 130 S.E. l22nd Avenue ALpine 4-5531 MR. GUILFORD MARTIN Principal Bible I English IV How I yearn to see each Christian High Schooler choose God's Highway for his journey through life. Most of us are standing on that narrow way that leads to life by God's Grace through our priceless heri- tage of Christian homes, churches and Christian schools. Yet, all too often each of us finds himself walk- ing down an arterial path - that of worldliness - in spite of the fact that we possess the Heavenly Road- Map for life which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. The poet JOSIAH HOLLAND wrote: God, give us men! A time like this demands strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands. Such men walk the narrow way of fellowship with God's Son, their faith in Him overcoming the world by God's indwelling Spirit. Out of the multitude of Christians living today, called to be saints, will you be one of the comparatively few who walk through the narrow gate and travel the narrow road of righteous living? If you will, someday you shall say, with another who has walked God's Highway through life, I remember the years of His hand's sure leading- How safe His guidance, His ways how wise: Often my thoughts and my heart would wander, My feet would follow my straying eyes: But never once did His patience fail me, And through it all did His love restrain, And when I followed where He would lead me, How all the wav and the end grew plain. We started ol? with a bang by taking a chilling trip to Mt. Hood in cars, one a convertible with the top down, naturally! Four of our class were privileged to sing in the school choir, and we began the tradition of having the Frosh decorate the chapel for Christmas. Joy Varney and Gwen Becktell were the two in the snapshot that won first place that year. Then there was the formal banquet, too. Beth Sternberg, our Valentine princess, delighted us all by taking the top honor of the year for our class, being voted queen of the Sweetheart Serenade. 1955-56-Now with thirty members, we gladly took over the task of Initiation, and earned most of our class money by sales - hamburgers, donuts, and chili. The year got under way for us by a bowling party and, later on, a day at the beach. Once again our princess, this time Carol Rogers, was chosen queen of the Sweetheart Serenade. She was also in the winning snapshot. COur girls are photogeniclj Lanita Smith and Sharon Mason ran the candy store, and four of us worked in the office that year. Marshall Benson and jerry Wade were on the starting fave of the basketball team. 1956-57-This year found us, twenty-nine strong, planning the formal junior-Senior Banquet taking place at the Ione Plaza, and helping the Seniors with the Spa-get-together. It was our turn to put out the Copywriter , and Eve of our members, including john Rogers, served on the Rally Squad. We had quite a few parties, including a Halloween party at Judy Corkum's, a swim- ming party and a farewell party for three departing classmates. Once more Lanita and Sharon ran the candy store, and our industrious class purchased an ice cream machine to bring in more dollars. Ruth Myrick, one of us, won the city's annual junior Symphony contest, 1957-58-Seniors at last, the twenty-four of us chose Breitenbush Hot Springs for our memorable Senior Sneak. We all loved our adviser for two years, Mr. Wade, who was always ready for another party, and had one at his house for us. We won the ad contest and yes! - it happened again. Angeln Brown of our class became queen of the Sweetheart Serenade, along with our first king, Vern Hoffman. Mr. Martin sa.id he would always remember us for our puzzling answers in Amer- ican Problems class. Ruth Myrick,,now annual editor, has been choir pianist for three years, and Joy Varney a cheerleader for four. Marshall was on Portland's high school Prep Panel, and Angeln wrote several articles on the school for the Oregon Journal. It was hard to gradu- ate, but we left behind us four wonderful years of memories, growing, learning and laughing together. CASCADE COLLEGE A Ready Mind - A Radiant Spirit 705 N. This school, founded, dedicated, and based primarily on Christian training for the young person, is a mill for turning out men and women dedicated to the cause of Christ, in all walks of life. When we as students realize this, we can begin to take advantage of our opportunity. With each succeeding year, the Lord takes us ahead an- other step. Because of His continual blessings and consecrat- ed faculty and society, we are reaping the harvest of a bounti- ful year. Again we are amazed at what the Lord can ac- complish with so little. Why? We changed the color from green to a rich brown. After we generously distributed the choclately liquid all over the buildings, Mr, Seaders painted the tri'n a mint green. But this was just the beginning! Through the wonderful help of parents and friends we ploughed, roto-tilled and ral-:ed the yard in front. This was later planted to grass. Curbs were put in and the drive-way was graveled. To top it off, the Seniors left a rustic sign out front as their gift. We're so thankful to God for making it possible for us to make our campus more beautiful. We're thankful for those whom He worked through - our parents, teachers, and friends. PHIL. 3:03174 COACH SEZ . . . The athletic program of PCH for 1957-58 has been one of real challenge. The year has marked our entrance into the Sunset League through membership in the Oregon School Activities Association. Both the boys and myself have learned much from our competition with other schools and we were afforded many opportunities to witness for our Lord. Our victories on the court were few, but victories through Him were many. Certainly, Christ can teach us many things as we play the game with Him as our Cap- tain and Leader. How wonderful it is to see boys and girls hiding the word of God in their hearts while learning the three R's. Beginning in the kindergarten and continuing through the eight grades, the memorizing of Bible verses takes its place beside reading or arithmetic. Under the guiding hand of God-fearing teach- ers each child is taught to see God's hand in every subject. While their lives are young and tender we must plant the seed that will later bring forth an hundred fold. Then we can claim God's promise that when they are old they will not depart from the way. The church has your child one hour each week, while the school has your child thirty hours each week. Your child is a gift from God, what will you do with it? GEORGE H.
