DEDICATIUN One hundred years ago there was a famous rush to California. . . the rush for gold. People moved West rapidly and the population grew. The land was soon occupied. The people had many problems and questions which arose when they staked their claims. In this 1949, the El Granito Staff had a problem: the problem being to whom our El Granito should be dedicated. Our question has been solved and our claim has been staked. We have dedicated our year book to four sincere schoolmasters, who have served us faithfully for many years. Each was patient and wisely advising in every way. They were always willing to help a student. These teachers were capable of engineering the students and the school. They were willing to help promote any project that would help with the better- ment of the school. Economics Department since 1911, Mrs. Danner who taught in the Commercial Department since 1921, Mr. Copeland who taught in the English Department since 1926, Mr. Hamlin who served the Coaching Staff and in the Math Depart- ment since 1918, and Mr. Noyes, who served in the Math and Science Depart- ment since 1924. These teachers will remain a pleasant memory in our hearts forever.

THEME What could be more suitable for our theme than the 49'ers? Following this line of thought, we have chosen them as our theme of the El Granito this year. One hundred years ago there occurred the expansion to the West, the Gold Rush, and there were the 49'ers who lived in that era. With the coming of 1949, another century has vanished from our sight with only the memories lingering. The Gold Rush of 1849 and the rushing of these last four years were alike in that they held happiness, excitement, and hard work. Iust as men, in 1849, went to the hills in hope of finding a new vein of gold, so the students came to Porterville Union High School with the hopes of finding a vein of luck and success. Similarly as many of the gold- seekers toiled day after day, finally quitting in disgust, others worked on toward the pathway that would lead to a better future. So the students have striven to find that same pathway: the one for success. The first methods of recovering gold were most primitive. Gold mining today has become a highly scientific enterprise in which success awaits only those who avail themselves School is based on the same principle When the Freshman first entered high school his methods were pr1m1 tive Upon becoming a Senior there was a decided improvement and ad vancement of the methods used This proves only that experience and hard work are the best teachers We hope as you rem nisce through the yearbook that you will be on the pathway leading to enloyment of this 1949 El Granito ' at l 'Q ws 515 fx!
