The people had many problems and questions which arose when they staked their claims. In this 1949, the El Granito Staff had a problem: the problem being to whom our El Granito should be dedicated. Our question has been solved and our claim has been staked. We have dedicated our year book to four sincere schoolmasters, who have served us faithfully for many years. Each was patient and wisely advising in every way. They were always willing to help a student. These teachers were capable of engineering the students and the school. They were willing to help promote any project that would help with the better- ment of the school. Economics Department since 1911, Mrs. Danner who taught in the Commercial Department since 1921, Mr. Copeland who taught in the English Department since 1926, Mr. Hamlin who served the Coaching Staff and in the Math Depart- ment since 1918, and Mr. Noyes, who served in the Math and Science Depart- ment since 1924. These teachers will remain a pleasant memory in our hearts forever. 345' wi 1 Q '?'i:V f f .kiiifxx i..Ui' t ,K 1,1Q3jfHgfig 5.2 M yi y HSN' - Q? fi '4 4f HT 533 lg f-J, E51- '. X ? One hundred years ago there occurred the expansion to the West, the Gold Rush, and there were the 49'ers who lived in that era. With the coming of 1949, another century has vanished from our sight with only the memories lingering. The Gold Rush of 1849 and the rushing of these last four years were alike in that they held happiness, excitement, and hard work. Iust as men, in 1849, went to the hills in hope of finding a new vein of gold, so the students came to Porterville Union High School with the hopes of finding a vein of luck and success. Similarly as many of the gold- seekers toiled day after day, finally quitting in disgust, others worked on toward the pathway that would lead to a better future. So the students have striven to find that same pathway: the one for success. The first methods of recovering gold were most primitive. Gold mining today has become a highly scientific enterprise in which success awaits only those who avail themselves School is based on the same principle When the Freshman first entered high school his methods were pr1m1 tive Upon becoming a Senior there was a decided improvement and ad vancement of the methods used This proves only that experience and hard work are the best teachers We hope as you rem nisce through the yearbook that you will be on the pathway leading to enloyment of this 1949 El Granito ' at l 'Q ws 515 fx! All were hopeful that there would be an ever increasing desire on the part of students and faculty to cooperate in hold- ing to high standards of scholarship and citizenship. Now that it is time for the graduation of the Senior Class and the presentation of a new Freshman Class, we can look back to see how well we have achieved our goals. There may be a few regrets over tasks still to be done, but there can be no denying that it has been a happy experience of working together for the best interests of the school and the stu- dent. I congratulate the Seniors upon suc- cessfully reaching an important step on the ladder of Education. To all of the faculty and students, and friends of the school, I extend my appreciation for your part in helping to make this a successful school year. It has been a pleasant experience, for me, to work with you, and take part in your activities. -C . W. It is the duty of the board of directors to promote this advance- ment in our school. The Board consists of five efficient and expeii- enced legislators who meet and discuss the needs of the boys and girls: making plans for the present and the future. The careful distribution of the ta x- payer's money affords the best possible educa- tional facilities and instructors. These truly hard-working executives seldom re- ceive the credit they deserve for handling the dif- ficult and tedious roles behind the scenes. No engineer or miner ever worked as hard or was as deserving of credit es our Vice-Principals, Miss Mary Sprott, Dean of Girls: Mr. Edward Land- graf, Dean of Boys. It is the task of the vice-principals to arrange and to adjust the size of all classes, program students to their needs, likes and dislikes. assign teachers counsel seniors and keep records of all students in the high school. Various other duties were as- sumed by both, including making up the school extra curricular calendar and daily bulletin. Beside his other duties Mr. Landgraf is Attendance Officer of the boys. We feel we owe them our gratitude. Mr. Hubbell Miss Sprott Mr. Landgrul' seq 565 .xiii . A qi, 5 ,Q 1 f I 1 , 1- j gf W 3 I Q Y U6 1, A 3 , 3 2 R . Q-5 Hunan, W 'J' ? Y A .V X42 W, fs 4.5 .. As our Freshman year progressed, we created what we called Loud Shoe and Sock Day , this being different from anything that the school had ever had. lt went over big with the entire student body. Besides this we had our annual picnic and assembly. Our assembly was acclaimed one of the best of the year. We made a showing for ourselves from the beginning by participating in athletics, tal- ent assemblies and other school activities. However inexperienced we may have been, we have certainly proven our outstanding ability as leaders. Our Sophomore year we showed even more enthusiasm by originating the now annual Sophomore Kiddy Day . We had a very good assortment of talented actors, therefore we had a very successful assembly. About the middle of the year we ordered our class rings which were rectangular in shape and were gold with a choice of stones. Virgil De Vore. Our Iunior Rube Day was said to be one of the best in history of Porterville Union High School, our theme being Funny Papers . On that day you could see super- men, Daisy Maes, Little Lulu's, and many others all over the campus. Our enthusiasm was no less in our assembly. The Circus was our theme. As Iuniors we presented the unusual and beau- tifully decorated prom with the theme of Midnight Masquerade. The scene was in a medieval garden and a waterfall with floating water lilies being the center of attraction. At midnight all the lights were turned out except a pink one which shown on a black clock sprinkled with silver which told the time of 12 o'clock. Hilarity reigned, in a packed house, the night that the Iuniors presented their play Sis Perkins. A picnic at the end of the year bade farewell to our Iunior year, and we took up shovels to dig in deep at our Senior year. The 49ers emerged triumphant with this being our biggest year. As we started down the trail we took everything in our stride. On the annual hat day, it was interesting to see the many original creations on every senior's head. Our assembly was a variety of talent including the georgeous Varga Girls. We Shook the Family Tree was the name of the tre- mendously successful play that the Senior Class put on. In this the talented actors of the class exemp- lified their ability. Last but not least was our Dress-up day, it looked like Broadway on Easter Morning. Then at long last we had reached our goal that anxiously awaited day .... Graduation. We had looked forward to this day but when it arrived all the long faces you saw were Seniors. We only hope that our future lives will be as successful as we hope our school years have been. The Senior Class Officers for the class of 1949 were the students who were chosen from the class to represent us at all meetings and affairs. We accomplished a great deal during the course of the year for the class and the school as a whole. The class presented, with the arrangement by the officers, several well attended dances, presented a good assembly, and earned enough money to donate a basketball scoreboard to be placed in the gym in our name. A Senior bulletin board was ar- ranged by the officers, to inform us of all senior activities. 19 Iona Haxton Wanda Helms Nadine Henderson Bill Hepburn Gerald Hildebrand Howard Hill Natalie Hodgson Maebelle Holbrook Betty Hoss Kay Howeth David Hunt Betty Iohnson Charles Kamrath lohn Keeler Margaret Kellerhals Elma Kerr Iane Herrold Marion Hester Rodney Homer Myrta Horst La Verne Iones Pete Iurkovich Phyllis Kirk Earl Knight Doyle Krause Margaret Krause Myrna Lahman Earl Lambert Edward Lasley Kenneth Overman Willy Parham George Parker Claudine Parkinson Ieanne Preston Billie Prince Velta Reynolds Betty Rider Rouene Robinson Evelyn Rockwell Belen Rodriquez Leroy Ryrner Richard Sheldon Francis Shellabarqer Richard Simpson Marietta Slaughter 4933 PINE ART Under the direction ot Mr. Henry A. Foley, the stage craft class turned out a production which in the technical aspect, was one of the most ambitious plays ever given in Porterville. The set decoration committee was Dickie Wilson, Marietta Slaughter and Pat Salisbury: and Ioan Bellah was in charge ot props, ward- robe, and make-up. Charlene Anglin, Lillian Graef, and Gary Cutburth were in charge of publicity. Imogene Campbell and Maebelle Holbrook were the program chairmen. The stagecraft class itself consisted of Gary Hill, Denny Stout, lim Long and Gilbert Orozco. The Senior Class wishes to especially thank Mr. Foley and his stagecraft class for it was through their untiring efforts that the Seniors were able to present a successful play. It was entitled We Shook the Family Tree and was under the direction of Mr. Henry A. Foley. The three-act comedy involves tour conflicting parents, a walltlower, and a pair of knickers. The play concerns Hildegarde Dolson, a girl who is tired of being a wallilower. She isn't popular with the boys and there is a Prom coming up. She decides that she has to do something to make some- one notice her, so she enters a school debate. In the debate she is very dramatic: so much so that she gives the impression that her father is a habitual drunkard. This is very bad because her father, Mr. Dolson. is a clerk in the local bank. Mr. Shermer, the banker, is a huffy, hen-pecked man, who can really cause trouble, which he proceeds to do when he hears of the debate. The plot thickens as Mrs. Dolson arranges with Mrs. Shermer for Hildegarde to go to the Prom with Freddie, the banker's son. Freddie is the boy who wears knickers. Hildegarde is mortified at the very thought of Freddie and his knickers. Among all of the confusion, Hildegarde mis- takenly gives some letters to Egbert Mason. These letters were Hi1degarde's parent's love letters. Eg- bert distributed them throughout the neighborhood. In a round-about way Hildegarde encourages Freddie to get a new suit. She tells him to either beg, borrow or steal a pair of trousers. Freddie can't beg or borrow a pair of long trousers, so he steals a pair. While all of this is happening, Hildegarde takes a mud bath to improve her beauty. What more do you need for an outstanding play? Since the beginning of the play, Mr. Dolson has lost his job and the Shermer's house has been robbed of a Wrist watch. In the end everything is explained. Freddie stole the watch so he could buy the suit, and Mr. Dolson gets his job back. Hildegarde and Freddie attend the Prom and Hildegarde turns into a sophisticated young lady. EL GRANITO The year 1949 marks a milestone in the history of our state as well as in many of our lives. The paths we have trodden thus far cannot be retraced. We have had some happy moments, some sad moments, and some mo- ments we will never forget. These moments make up the days, months, and years of our lives. It is the hope that we of the El Granito staff can help you hold a few of these precious high school events in the form of pictures, drawings, and writings bound together into a book you'll cherish in your memories. This book would not have been possible, of course, without the capable assistance of the El Granito staff. We had our slow times and our rushing times, but thoughtful cooper- ation at all times. l would like to thank each and everyone for making such a wonderful year possible. Among the most capable and helpful we find our superb advisor, Mrs. Florence Offutt. Without Mrs. Offutt we would have no book. while with her we have turned out the finest book we know how-like it? Patmore, and Editors, Helen Dennis Qfirst semesterj and Marian Chung Csecond semester J, Cpictured below D, the Orange and Green staff has worked diligently each week in order to present a paper of interest to the student body. The staff not only reported on current events, weekly, but also in- cluded a certain amount of gossip concerning the various social affairs of the school year, and all the latest on Fashions. This year the paper was financed by the student council and could be obtained free by the students who had student body cards. Those who didn't purchase cards received the papers for five cents. One of the highlights of the year for the journalism class was the dance spon- sored by them. The proceeds went to help finance the Orange and Green. Another memorable event was the assembly the staff put on. They presented a clever skit for the purpose of advertising the paper. This project was really a lot of fun. All in all, those of the staff had quite a successful and eventful year. This year they chose Quinon Gibson for Iudge: Don Allen, Asst. Iudge: Vincent Passion, Prosecuting Attorney: Charlene Anglin, Recording Secy.: Ioan Trost, Secy.: and Mr. Toole, Supervisor. When a student is arrested he is brought to the Student Court and tried. There are witnesses and a jury. Every student is invited to meetings held by the Court, to get to know a little better, its funda- mentals. Some of the violations are, running in the halls, crowding in the lunch line, throwing papers on the campus and making noise in assembly. No teacher is permitted to make an arrest, only members of the Student Court. Members were posted at the doors of games to keep law and order. The school has been made a better school, by the help of the Court and all the students of Porterville Union High School. g ,K F -ip ,, -..M . .. .. .. . X fx B HUNUP. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club has not been an active organi- zation for the past ten years. This year under the supervision of Mr. Richard Burrell the club has been successfully organized into an active club.. One of the first problems was the making of a club con- stitution. We received our Club pins in the middle of the second semester. Our Club presented an as- sembly the first of the year. The big party at the end of school was held at Bartlett Park. We have had a very eventful year and are look- ing forward to its continuation and growth. There are about eighty-five active members. The club of- ficers for the year were: Ben Webb, president: Nina Foran, vice-president: Clarence Collier, secretary: and Georgea Farmer, treasurer. Lots of hard work and effort is necessary to make a Glee Club. Through just such hard work and effort Mrs. Katherine Washburn has built an excellent chorus. Some activities of the year were the Christmas assembly and the candlelight services at the Con- gretational Church. Several girls entered the Fresno music festival. The trio that entered received a su- perior rating. Ioyce Bryant, who sang a solo, also received a superior rating. The Girls Chorus joined with the Boys Chorus and presented the Patrons Day evening concert and they also furnished music for the Baccalaureate services. The Girls Glee Club wishes to thank Mrs. Wash- burn for they feel that it was only through her hard work and interest that their year was one of success. Row I: Davis, Arm- strong. Hatfield. Davis. The Boys Chorus this year represents one of the largest groups in the Boys Chorus, there being B8 voices under the direction of Mr. I. Vaznaian. The chorus sang for the assembly program, and combined with the Girls Chorus to present the Christmas Assembly. For the first time in many years the boys presented an all-boys operetta, Cleo- patra, which received much favorable comment. The boys sang for the annual Fish and Game Ban- quet. Other programs were Patrons Day and Bac- calaureate services. The chorus will lose several outstanding voices by graduation: Leroy Rymer, Virgil DeVore, Mike Torigan, Richard Calderon, Don Trueblood, Harold Massey, Vernon Snow and several others. The chorus wishes to thank Mr. Vaznaian for his help and interest as they feel that their year was truly one filled with success. BAND The Band really hit a stride this year and was able to play a great deal of concert type of music, aside from the march type which is required for the many public appearances, such as the Armistice Day Pa- rade and the football games. This year the entire band journeyed to Visalia for the game there. A so- called pickup band was organized within the band, they played at basketball games and football rallies. The regular band played at the Fish and Game banquet this year, and the boys had an opportunity to really get their fill of good eats. Several of the band members were chosen to play in the Tulare-Kings County High School Honor band which presented a concert in Mooney's Grove in May. The Memorial Day Parade closed the year. Two of the members were honored by being chosen as members of the All Western States or- chestra which presented a concert at Sacramento, at the Music Educator's conference in April. Several of the members played solos on their respective instruments at many different functions in school and out and some participated in the Cen- tral California Music Festival at Fresno and were rated very high on their respective instruments. INTERNATIONAL CLUB The International Club was organized in April, 1948 as a result of interest taken by the students who appeared at a Rotarian program. The theme for their program was the Melting Pot. Several meetings were held to draw up a consti- tution so a group might continue this year. At first the club was limited to students who had parents or grandparents who came from foreign countries. It was decided to be a high school and college organi- zation where all may enter providing they were interested in working for brotherhood. The projects were an assembly for the aid of CARE seed packages and postage to send books to foreign countries Our assembly was held in April, the theme being, And Crown thy Good with Bro- therhood from Sea to Shining Sea. The officers for the year were: Taylor Bradley, president: Eva Gong, vice-president: Vera Demetriff, secretary: La Vern Richter, treasurer: Frank Long, reporter. They had a snow party in March, and a skating party a little later, both were a huge success for all. Mr. Kralowec, our advisor, arranged for several movies on woodwork to be shown to the group. All woodshop boys were invited. Speakers were asked to tell about various trades. In May our club was in charge of the display at the annual Patron's Day. The Chamber of Commerce, taking a great interest in our club, awarded ribbons for the best projects of all high school students taking woodwork. We hope that this club will be continued in future years because we thing it helps a boy appreciate and enjoy woodwork more. It puts on one or more dances per year as well as its annual initiation day. The initiates wear very clever and even ec- centric costumes, go through every kind ot harsh treatment, and come out all smiling in the end fit they live through itj! This year the Panther Punchers chose as their queen, Novella Wilson. Novella was the first Scamp- er Queen ever to be elected and she was in com- petition with the following girls: Evelyn Rockwell, Helen Dennis, Wanda Lewis, Eleanor Crow and Iackie Iones. Novella was crowned with a beautiful crown during intermission and was presented with a golden glove. 75 GRIDIRUN GREATS The Panthers had a moderately successful season but only on occasion did they look very good. Some of the games in which they looked exceptionally good were Edison, Taft, Tulare and Visalia. The first three were won and the fourth was a tie. Some of the hi-lights of the season were Trueblood's passing, Ashley's pass catching, and Torigian's, Rymer's, Gibson's, and Adam's running. The opening game of the season was with East Bakersfield in the southern city. Although the Pan- thers went down before the Blades 25-19, they all but ran the southerners off the field in the second half. Ashley and Trueblood were outstanding. The first practice game was with Strathmore and was won 28-6. Adams and Miller were the outstand- ing players in this game. In their next game the Panthers ran over the Edison Tigers 20-O In this game Rymer was outstanding by his running. The line also played a good game. The fourth game proved to be one of the most disastrous of the entire season. It was with the Madera Coyotes, champions of the northern half of the valley. The game was won by the Coyotes 33-18. The half-time score was 18-14 in favor of the Panthers but after the half they failed to click and the Madera team got better as the game progressed. The second league game was with Taft and the final score was 26-6 in favor of the locals. The game was never in doubt as the Panthers led 13-6 at the half. Those who scored touchdowns were Ashley, Mays, Gibson and Adams. The Wasco Tigers mauled the Panthers in the next game 14-12. The Panthers played inferior ball throughout the game and all but gave the game away by their fumbles. In the Tulare game Gibson really hit his stride. He scored twice and made long gains almost every time he carried. The score at the final gun was 26-0 with the Panthers coming out on top. Prandini, Zaninovich, Trueblood and Torigian also made long gains. Torigan was injured the first half and was out the remainder of the season. The Home team then met Tulare on Tulare's field. The Cubs got off to a slow start, and at the end of the third quarter the Papooses were leading by a score of 14 to 0. Even though every member of the squad had several years of playing experience, they failed to click as a team. In the pre-season games they showed promise of developing into a very strong team. They won almost all of their practice games, twice defeating Exeter who later won the County championship for small schools. The most consistent scorer on the team was Chuck Harris, forward, who was chosen for the all-county team. He was very good on lay-up shots and also did well on the longer ones. He is a junior and will be back to play on next year's team. Other members of the first string who will be back next year are Gibson and Newman. Edd Ashley, center, was high scorer during the season play. He also did very well on defense. Row I: Phipps. Harris, Easterbrook, Ashley, Newman, Standifvr. Row 2: Coach Mock, Gibson, Trueblood, Pearson, Mays, Kennedy, Caldwell, Sharp Harris Trueblood Kennedy Newman Ashley Gibson Caldwell Phipps Other players showing good ability part of the time were Trueblood Caldwell and Ph1pps The Panthers were strictly a one half team ln many of the games they were able to hold their own during the first half but were defeated in the third and fourth periods The Panthers only league win was from the Visalia Pioneers. This was the first league game. From the showing they made in this game, high hopes were held for a successful season. The team, however, seemed to deteriorate instead of improve. After a number of the league games had been lost, Coach Mock used many of the underclassmen in an attempt to build up a stronger team for next year. 83 HAPLESS HOOP-MEN Row I: Ireton, Whitten, Lankford, Harris, Rymer. Row 2: Chaney, Gilbert, Anthony. Coleman, Hobbs, Ra1't'erty. Row 3: Coach Brugh, Farrell, Salaiz, Owens, Phipps, Roberts. The Lightweight basketball team completed an unsuccessful season in league play. They did not win a single game, although some of their scores were very close. The Cubs climaxed the last game of the season with Visalia, by nearly defeating the league champions. At the half the score was 22 to 20 in favor of Visalia. The Cubs then put on a powerful drive until the score was 25 to 25. Then, as in so many games, the Cubs couldn't sustain their drive and were finally defeated 35 to 27. One handicap of the Cubs was the lack of experienced players from the preceding years, but game by game the Cubs showed steady improvement. The last three games the Cubs demonstrated splendid ball handling. Although all the players were fairly equal, Anthony, Whitten, Lankford, Gilbert and Rymer should receive honors for sparking the team. Rymer, left forward, made second string on the Southern San Ioaquin Valley all-league cage team. The team was greatly strenghtened at the end of the season by the addition of Barnard and Axelrod. With a few of the lightweight players returning next year and some good possibilities from the C class we should have a leading team. 85 CLASS C BASKETBALL This basketball team was composed almost entirely of Freshman boys. They were under the capable coaching of Mr. Grimm. They started out with a rather unsuccessful season but came through to win second place in the county. Buryl Cox was chosen for the all- county team. There were eight lettermen re- turning from last year's A Class team, as well as several from the Iunior Varsity. The chief weakness of the team was infield er- rors. The Panthers were also weak at the plate, and failed to get more than three or four hits in each game. Theleague was chang- ed this year, and instead of playing six or seven teams, the Panthers met Tulare, Delano and Visa- lia three times each. They also took part in the Delano Invitational Tournament during Easter vacation. More than 30 schools were represented. The team played its best game of the whole season in this tournament. They won two games and lost two and every one of them were well played and the scores were all close. The games which were won were McFarland and Woodlake. The two which were lost were Bakers- field and Fresno High. Previously Bakersfield had defeated the Panthers by rather lop-sided scores. This time they were lucky to take out a 2-1 win in the final inning. The Fresno game was lost inthe tenth inning after the Panthers had tied the score in the seventh. Leading hitters in the tournament were Massey, Ashley, Lasley and Hawkins. This year's team was composed almost exclu- sively of seniors but many of the Iunior Var- sity players will be back to play for the Varsity next year. Throughout the year many games were played including: tennis, bad- minton, volleyball, basketball, softball, and also folk-dancing was enjoyed. This year the annual county playday was held in Porterville. The two best volleyball teams from each school in the league were present. The league consists ot: Dinuba, Exeter, Hanford, Lindsay, Orosi, Tulare, Visalia, and Woodlake. The advantage of be- ing able to kill the ball netted us lroth fi'st and second places. In Ianuary our officers went to Woodlake for a conference and banquet of all the San Ioa- quin Valley. We are on the four year plan meaning that ine points you earn one year are carried over until the next. The first year you should earn a pin, second a letter, third a stripe, and fouzth a stripe. The G.A.A. is spending a large amount of money to purchase a trophy to he placed permanently in the Gym. The outstanding senior girl and the class champions have their name on a permanent trophy which is also kept in the gym. The officers for the year were: President, Betty Io Iohnson: Vice President, Novella Wilson: Secretary, Ioyce Hair: Treas- urer, Dorothy Perkins: Publicity Chairman, Marybeth Toole: Program Chairman, Margie Boesch. , 5 ?!
