Copeland MEMORIES Four years ago a group of boys and girls entered the Porterville High School for the first time -backward, but with a willingness to take their place among the other students of longer training. Today, these same students are iinishing the course they began in the not-dis- tant past. During their few short years here they have made many new friends-began together, studied together, and now finish together the work all are called upon to provide. The time has slipped around when we, the senior class of 1937-38, no longer can view ourselves as part of the life of Porterville High . . . Days here will live on -not in reality, but as memories. In behalf of the senior class, the staff, myself, and with our appreciation of thanks to Mr. Copeland for his splendid assistance, we dedicate this bool: to you, the entire student body, with the hope that in it you will find streams of happy memories of days here at Porrerville High. -The Editor. 1 -7- Women Mrs. Miss Ann B. The sopho- more party in the gymg then the big picnic at California Hot Springs where we bathed and skated until worn to a frazzle ,... Our junior year oHered us a chance to strut before the footlights in the form of the junior play. An' remember how we had to raise money to have the junior-senior upromv just 'cause we didnit make a cent on our play! The prom was certainly nice though, dancing mid the cool shadows of the gym. The soft colors so appropriate to the theme, Moonlight and Shadowsn, played by Allen's orchestra .... Pirates, gypsies, island girls, old fashioned ladies, men in night clothes, a criminal, the hill-billy orchestra-flaming colors, rufifiing skirts and effervescent joy marked our junior rube day. Some of us had a busy day with our cameras, taking interesting pictures of friends who were so gallantly dressed, while others of us just had a swell time . . . Our Senior Year began slowly, but increased its tempo as the year rolled on. We sort of made up for our financial Hop in the junior play by registering one of the largest attendances ever to witness a senior play at Porterville high . . . My, our athletic teams really did well too. We certainly had a football team. Wow-only one touchdown scored against us in league competition, but yet, it cost the cham- pionship title! . . . Ten straight victories and the varsity county championship was ours in basketball. Remember the fun we had riding the bus to these games an' then the climax of getting a special train to Bakersfield? What a train ride! The poor conductors were run ragged by the kids who insisted on keeping the lights out. It rained outside, but inside we danced, roamed through the cars, and had a grand time. We arrived back at the Porterville depot with a peppering rain to greet us . . March 18th will long be remembered by most of us seniors. That was the day we decided to take a preliminary vacation and put a iigure 'QBN on top of old Magnesite Hill. There was the wienie feed at Bartlettg some went to visit Lindsay and Strath- more high schoolsg and then the big reunion in the afternoon when we put the figure back on the hill. fsome juniors disturbed the first onel . . But now, it's all over- high school life is just a memoryg but within us, that memory will always live. -9.. Our annual prom, the highlight of the year, given in honor of the senior class, was successful in every way. Our activities consisted of our play, The Whole Townls Talking , which was presented to an appreciative audience late in the spring. A well planned assembly was also outstanding in the performances of the junior class. Under the direction of Keith Skidmore, our president, we successfully pre- sented a junior dance and rube day. We believe that we are fully equiped to fill the places of the graduating seniors. ,23- K r T Johnny Cemo ,...,. ,,,,,,.,,..,..Presiclent Cyrille Faure ,,,Y,,YY,g ,,,,.,,, V ice-President Louise Holt ,,...,,,,.,,..,.,,,, ..,,..,..,....Secretary Donald McDonald ,,,..,. ..,,,,,, T reasurer Dick Jamison ,,,,,,,.,,,,,,,,,, , ,,,..,.,.,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,Representative The cool, tantalizing waters of the swimming pool and the glistening whirr of rolling skates at Hot Springs will long be remembered by the group of sophomores who journeyed to this favorite resort one Saturday morning near the closing brackets of another school term. The picnic was sublime-flavored with toothsome food, vigorous swimming, spills and jills on the steel rollers, and rhythmic dancing from 2:00 until 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon. Oversh p ngs picnic was our party held in the nasium one memorable ni ht. A few of our talented entertainers performed in assembly, thus showing that the freshmen class had the necessary requirements if called upon to lend their help. This year has been used more as a primer to accustom the class to the environ- ment of high school ways, with the result we haven't much to write about, but feel that we have lived up to the expectatio b ns estowed upon us, and will continue to fill our place at Porterville high. 1 1 'X ., X K, YHA- Le fr to Right from Top to Dituhers!,' Together We Stand Lookin' an' Longin' Swartz' Ex-barn Rosalie Cuties Window View Where to From Here? The single topic in which the most progress was made was obtaining foreign correspondents for students in the club. The purpose of the Panaclelphic Club is to give students an opportunity for find- ing out more about foreign countries, thus providing for better understanding be- tween them and our people. There is no better way to find out how they live, what they believe in, and a multitude of other things, than by being told by someone of the same age. All of the students who wanted to write to students their own age in foreign countries had correspondents arranged for them. Club members had writers all over the world, from Sweden to Australia, and the new things they learned were valuable as well as being enjoyable. All in all, the members of the Panadelphic club have had fun and profited from their experiences in this social group. According to Mr. Robbins, this yearis Orchestra is made up of practically all new members, where before the musicians were somewhat experienced. Some of the musicians in the orchestra are expected to go far in the musical world. This year we played a very difficult piece, On the Trail , by Fredi Grofe, from the Grand Canyon Suite . While the piece is being played you can visualize a pack train of mules winding in and out of the rocks. You can imagine the setting sun with a background of blue, cloud-dotted sky. In the fall, the band participated in BalcersfLeld's Pioneer Day parade. This was a colorful occasion. There were scores of glittering costumes, prancing horses, elaborate Hoats, and many bands. There were also nine members of the band who were chosen to play in the All- County Band, which gave a concert in Mooney's Grove, Sunday, May 8. When the one Great Scorer cornes To write against your name, He'll ask not if you won or lost But how you played the garnef' -GRANTLAND RICE Q ,511 uprobably one of the most successful high school football squads ever turned outf, was this year's sports comment about the Porterville Varsity eleven. Four players from Porterville were chosen to fill all-county berths, and the team itself was beaten out of the county championship only by Tulare, who remained undefeated. In the first practice game with Bakersfield, the Panthers were defeated 13-7. Prospects began to look better for Porterville right then because Bakersfield always has a stronger team than any league team. Exeter, Delano and Hanford were first on the Panther list and were easily folded under, but then came Tulare. Tulare was also undefeated, and a good battle was expected when the two teams met, but nothing was forecast to happen the way things began to pop on the Tulare field that night. Although Porterville outplayed, outclassed, and outweighed the Tulare group, they were held to a scoreless tie until, with eight seconds left to play, a mix-up of signals caused a pass instead of the intended kick and an interception on our 30-yd. line. A short pass by Tulare put the ball six inches from the goal line. The gun went off, announcing the 'end of the game, but it was decided that there were still seconds left to play, and Tulare drove the ball over the goal for their 6 point win. Strathmore, Visalia, and Lindsay were swept over by the Panthers, but it was too late for all-county honors. Those chosen for the all-county team from Porter- ville were: Ernest Chitwood, left end, Barton Sheela, right guardg Lawrence Collier, left taclcleg and Ernest Belezzuli, halfbaclc. And so this yearls football players pack their suits away, some of them for the last time, being able to say that Tulare was the only team in the league who crossed our pay stripe, but deep inside of them they will cherish the thought that they who so well represented Porterville would remain the Uncrowned champions of l937. Q VARSITY FOOTBALL ' V ...nl 1 'f -49- LIGHTWEIGHT FOOTBALL The lightweights, although not as successful as their older brothers, were not obliged to look up to any team, putting up a sporting scrap in every game. This time it is the heavyweightsg a finer bunch of casaba heavers has never been found. The team was composed of Clare Slaughter at center, and a better fighter will not enter Porterville for a good whileg Kermit Hargett, at one of the forward posit- ions, oftenmade the spectators dizzy with his dodging and twisting in and out among the players to grab the ball and toss it to Russell Belton at the other forward position. Russell was the spark plug of the team. His ability to snag a ball out of mid-air and roll it into the basket when he was almost on his head amazed the spectators at every game. At the guard positions were Carson Dykes and Dene Simpson. Carson was the only fighter in the county who equalled Clare. His consistent ball playing and stubborn opposition made him the favorite attraction of several of the games. Dene was the toughest man of the team and was seldom outsmarted by an o osi player. In their second encounter with Porterville, Delano was nipped 30 to 23. In an overtime period, Porterville defeated Dinuba Z0 to 18. In Dinuba's second encounter with the Panthers, they found Porterville waiting for them and they went home with a 27 to Z6 defeat. Porterville high will long remember those five men. Others will remember them by the trophy in the show case, but the seniors will recall them by their valiant basketball playing and wonderful sportsmanship at every encounter. L... flk LIGHTWEIGHT BASKETBALL The lightweights this year were less fortunate than last, winning only half of their games. One noticeably remarkable point about their games was that they lost to the easy teams by a large margin, and the tough teams found that they had a pack of scrappy cubs after them and were nearly defeated. The cubs lost to Tulare 17 to 33 in their first encounter at Porterville. Qelano came to Porterville the following week and Went back with a 17 to 19 defeat, but when the cubs clashed with Dinuba the week after, they came back with a 14 to 4 loss, completely broken up by Dinuba's fast oEense and marvelous shooting. Hanford too, was a little too strong for the cubs and gave them a 22 to 18 trim- ming. In their encounter with Visalia, the lights were again defeated by a 24-19 score. In their second game with Delano the lightweights were defeated once more. They licked Dinuba, then whipped Hanford, and in their last game with Visalia they were again defeated. The cubs played a successful season, however, and next year the remaining men will probably have as successful a season as did this year's heavies. The lettermen were: Robert Nairn, Eddie Jones, Eddie Jarvis, Franklin Fiori, Donald Baker, Clarence Wheeler, Kermit Adams, Richard Falconer, John Cemo, and Buddy Garman. L The small Bantamweights this year made an excellent showing against all com- petition. Coach Hiram Fearey picked his squad from a large turn-out and cut it down to the most efhcient size and then traveled to Lindsay for the first game of the season. Lindsay turned them back with an 18 to IZ defeat, but they went right down to Delano and handed them a 19 to 17 trimming. Tulare was much too strong for the Heaweights and sent them back with a Z4 to 8 defeat. The Bantams then traveled to Lindsay again and took their vengence out on them to the tune of 33 to ZZ. Delano turned the fleas back again by one point after a bitter battle. In the last game of the season, Porterville played host to Tulare, who took the honors by a score of 10-7. Coach Hiram Fearey said that he was more than pleased with the showing his team made, and the lightweight coach will have a lot of excellent material next year. Those who made their letters were: V. Combined with the Booster Club, they put on many interesting events during 1938. The Block PH initiation in April proved very comical, everyone taking part in the pranks and jokes that were showered upon the incoming members. A dance in the evening topped off the day's festivities. The Boosters again combined with the Block P in presenting their annual assembly. This year it was a Charlie McCarthy program. The play was written and directed by Dick Loehnert, and the parts of Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen were played by Bobby Houghton and Edwin T. Force, a member of the faculty. Many radio and screen celebrities were introduced, such as Edward G. Robinson, played by Clarence Kerleyg May West, played by Nadine Lamb, Martha Ray, por- trayed by Pauline Stevensong Eddie Cantor, by Russell Belton, and Ted Healey, by Johnny Lucas. The climax of the year's events was the Booster-Block P banquet, held in the cafeteria in April. After the banquet, the senior class joined the two clubs in present- ing the annual senior dance, which was an evening of fun and amusement for all in attendance. 'P lm il. Porterville High was ably represented this year in regard to its baseball team, finishing the season with only one defeat. Although they failed to win the cham- pionship, diamond fans will find that the Panthers have played a good brand of ball for the season as a whole. The school was fortunate to have such senior veterans as Sheela, Nelson, and Wheeler for the first string and Riclcels and Rutherford as good reserves. Also, several juniors, Falconer, Gonzales, and the Hornsby twins have seen considerable service under the Orange and Green, while Goodrich is a capable newcomer. Underclassmen who have proved very valuable are Cemo, Culver, Jamison, and Williams, while Shaw and Cloer are good reserves, needing only more experience to Fill in. In the first game of the season, Porterville shellaclced Lindsay 10 to 2. Delano set the Panthers down 10 to 8, but Hanford was unable to conquer the fighting Irish and lost 10-9. Two air-tight contests marked the close of the season, with Porter- ville gaining the upper hand in both, winning from Corcoran 1-0, and squeezing out a 6-5 victory over Visalia in an overtime game.
