During the second part of the game they were '- f able to hold their own, losing it 31-20. Wllile the victorious Hanford team returned home, it was freely predicted that the second game of the tri-county league playoffs would be an absolute slaughter when the Panthers played on the Hanford floor The players felt differently however and did their best during the week to prepare for the game From the start the second game was different from the first Hanford confidence was never regained when Har ett eased the ball into the basket on the opening tpoff play Although they played much better ball than the week before they trailed at the half 9 12 but came back with the most bewildering ball Coach Took of the season at the beginning of the third period and before the unbelieving eyes of the Hanford rooters ran up a four point lead In spite of the weakening of the team because Hargett was sent out on foul shots the lead was retained and Porterville ended the game victoriously 26 24 Losing the fllp of a coin the Panthers had to journey to Hanford the next evening to decide the county championship Crepe hangers continued to predict a bad loss by Porterville Fighting even harder than the night before the local cagers played even with Hanford s wonder team and ended the half 12 17 gon g stronger every minute Hanford s coach wishing to pull a psychological stunt sent in a fresh second string while his first team rested They were meat for the infuriated Panthers who ran up a 10 point lead in less than that many minutes Hanford s fresh team found itself unable to function properly when it came back in and were able to do little better than hold their own in spite of the fact that two men were pulled out on four fouls Ending the game 28 19 the Panther team was in possession of the Tri county league championship after having defeated a team which coaches declared superior to them in every particular except fight This was the first time since 1925 that a local basketball team had even taken the league championship Panthers next had to face Bakersfield high school s Kern champions on their opponents large floor Starting the game with their usual fast agressive game at times they held as much as a nine point lead over their opponents During the latter part of the game however they slowed up almost fatally before the Bakers game Undaunted Hargett snaked the ball up under the goal and dumped it in 20 seconds before the game ended winning thus the Southern San oaquin Valley championship Meeting Fresno on the Fresno floor the Panthers played circles around the northern team during the first quarter but then slumped and played rather ordinary ball allowing the inspired Warriors to defeat them Z6 17 Although they left the highest honor as a goal for next year the cagers set up J!-LJ v V . 7 7 S , A .
