PORTERVILLE COLLEGE BASKETBALL The 1955-56 Porterville College basketballers were met at the beginning of the season by Coach Bill Stroud, new man to the Porterville College scene, but a gentleman with on enthusiastic know- ledge of the game and a desire to succeed and win. Our Pirates, a small band in number but strong in heart and will to win, played impressive ball throughout most of their games and lost several games by close scores or in the fourth period. Coach Stroud ' s Pirate squad, which averaged no more than five feet eleven inches in height, won 9 and lost 16 dunng its 25 game season and finished fifth in the Central California Junior College Ath- letic Association Basketball Conference. Mountie Bedford led the Porterville scoring this season with a total of 583 points, marking up a neat 23.3 game overage. In so doing, Mountie was named to the All-Conference Second Team. Bob Phipps with 279 points had an 11.2 average, Cleo Gibson with 202 points had a 9.6 average, and Dick Hardin drop- ped in 194 points for 8.1 average. Our cogers played in two tournaments this season, one at Bakersfield and the other at Ante- lope Valley. Richard Hardin, our sharp shooting guard, was elected captain for the season as well as being selected the most valuable player by his team motes. Hardin, along with his teammates was honored at the annual Basketball Banquet on April 1 1, at which time Richard was presented a trophy m commemoration of being named the team s choice as outstanding player of the year.
