Footboll Season of 1955 FootbalM955-found the Porterville College Pirates a small but determined group of men with a great desire to play football, promote sportsmanship, a desire to be a unit, a team, and to win. The Pirate grid machine, under head coach Sid Hall and his as- sistants Paul Juhl and Bill Stroud, finished its campaign with a four win, four loss, and one tie record. The Pirates football debut began with the annual intra-squad game between the whites and the blacks with proceeds from the affair to be used to secure traveling lackets for the team. In the first real grid test of the season the Pirates met a determined Hart- nell Panther who capitalized on 3 recovered Pirate fumbles and 3 intercepted passes to post a close 14-13 win Some of the defensive Pirate stand-outs were Aubrey Worden, Bob Edwards, Bob Johnson, and Richard Hardin. Traveling to Reedley for their first CCJCAA game of the sea- son the Pirates found the Reedley Tigers no match as they rolled to a 40-6 victory. Porterville College s grid machine was not to be denied as it met its arch rival, the College of the Sequoias Giants, in what has been billed as the Civil War of Tulare County. The Pirates held a half time edge of 7-0 on a one yard plunge by Bob Wiley and Ed Tuttle s conversion. The Pirates took complete possession of the pigskin in the final 30 minutes scoring four touchdowns in the fourth quarter of ploy, two by land-Tuttle and Wiley -and two by air--Wendell Bland to Mountie Bedford and George Stamatz to Dan Aonestod. The Giants six points came in the final minute of ploy. Coach Hall cleared his entire bench during the contest and later said. It was a great victory, everyone played good boll. The Block and Crimson grid machine next met a hapless Coalinga Falcon who went down to a 41-0 defeat The Fresno JC Rams, paced by their rampaging fullback, J C. White, foiled Porterville College s hopes for an undefeated lea- gue season by posting a 33-13 upset win. The game was a close one right into the fourth quarter with Fresno leading 14-13. The Taft Cougars were next to come to Pirate Town, but living up to advance press clippings they could not be denied. The Cou- gars, led by fullback Archie Schmitt, who accounted personally for 21 points, broke the Pirates back with a 47-14 win. Traveling to Lancaster by special train, the Pirates ran head- long into the Marauders of Antelop Valley. It was one of those nights, and although the Pirates outgained the Marauders in total yards gained by rushing and passing and also registered more first downs than their grey friends they still lost by a 47-20 count. Thanksgiving Day found the Pirates up against the greatly re- spected Citrus Owl of Azusa in the ninth annual Olive Bowl. This was on honor for the Pirates; it proved others knew of the fine team Coach Sid Hall had. After fumbling 8 times in the opening stanza the Pirates got down to football in the second quarter and soundly took the Owls apart Halfback, Bob Askins, scored first on a two yard plunge over tackle, Bryce Boley converted. Center Bob Salyer then picked off a pass on the 1 4 yard line and went into the end zone making it 13-12 at half time. In the final 30 minutes the Pirates really picked the bird clean by chalking up a 39-18 victory. Bob Askins, Bruce Fife, Dick Hardin and Bob Wiley took credit for the final four scores aided immensely by the power driving runs of fullback, Jim Baxley. It was one of the Pi- rates best gomes of the year and the tiiumph allowed the team to end the season on a merry note On Thursday, December 8, the Piiates were honored at a ban- quet given by the Student Body at the Distiict Cafeteria to which the public was invited. Lynn Pappy Waldorf was the guest speaker at the first PC Football Banquet. Several awards were handed out to the Pirate gridders.
