' u 'lionnllll vi 'A lt if 1 cmsfv D R 1 M' Hllllllllll EG ,,0L .nf TAG No. I OF zmfncfucr me four E f1!The nation's energy crisis continued throughout the year with gasoline prices soaring to all-time highs. 2!Faced with higher auto operating costs, many students rediscovered the enjoyment of nature. 3fService station operators in some parts of the country were forced to close due to petroleum shortages. 4!Administration sources reported that a supply of gasoline ration- ing coupons similar to the above have already been printed in the event rationing becomes necessary. 5!Lagging sales brought about layoff in the auto industry and swamped the unemployment offices nearest to the affected auto assembly plants. 6lAfter reverting to fossil fuels due to petroleum shortages, power company officials became uneasy when the United Mine Workers threatened to strike and carefully watched their dwindling coal supplies. 7!Protesting higher fuel prices, independent truckers blockaded numerous truck stops across the country. 8!Suspended by a parachute, Evel Knievel' and his rocket cycle head for the bottom of Snake River Canyon in Idaho after premature opening of the chute aborted his attempt to cross the 1,700- 5 foot wide canyon under steam power. 9!W ith Daylight Savings Time in effect in the early months of 1974, students found themselves walking to school in the dark. 10!A Turkish jetliner crashed in the woods north of Paris in March, killing all of the 345 passengers and crew members aboard. The crash ranks as the single worst airline disaster on record. 11lThe once-thriving recreational vehicle market also suffered due to the energy crisis as evidenced by the hun- dreds of unsold motor homes outside of Winnebagols plant in Forest City, Ia. 12fMany farmers gave up hope of harvesting a decent corn crop due to ex- treme drought conditions in the Midwest and chose instead to chop their crop for silage. An early frost affected the soybean harvest and overall yields of corn and beans were cut drastically. 13!Market prices for hogs topped those of cattle for nearly all of the year. A New York farm organization donated hun- dreds of calves to charity rather than destroy them in protest to rising produc- tion costs and low market prices. 14fFollowing an excellent year in 1973, the 1974 agriculture picture was dimmed by forces of inflation and recession.
