tudents involve themselves in area Many student and community activi¬ ties took place. One was the first-ever teachers ' strike. It lasted for five school days and was something many will nev¬ er forget. Three students in particular were in¬ volved: Ron Steve, junior, and Cathy Huey and Tina Wiggins, seniors. Tina acted as the spokesperson for the stu¬ dents. I felt that we needed to be in school. It was the students ' responsibil¬ ity to voice our opinions and concerns to all parties involved in order to end the strike. She called around to see if any stu¬ dents wanted to do anything about the strike, but many parents wouldn ' t let their children get involved. Finally, Ron and Cathy helped her get organized. She spoke to Mr. Marvin Allison, who was the spokesperson for the teachers on the picket line. I told him we were against the strike and were hoping it would be resolved quickly. There were also special concerns for the seniors in particular. Tina told this to Dr. Donald Bivens, strike headquarters and Mrs. Glenda Owens, president of the school board. We needed school for pre-college preparation. said Tina. Soon, after a long time negotiating, the strike was over. Tina would like to think that the students influenced the decision to end the strike, but even if they didn ' t, they accomplished what they set out to do. Another experience was Student Gov¬ ernment Day. Nine students participat¬ ed. Senior Mike Hall held the position of orking for the elections was a way to get involved. Junior Colleen Hyde and Mrs. Janette Allen help Councilman of the 1st District. A vote took place after people were nominated. Those interested turned in a form indi¬ cating which position they would like to run for. Then, students voted in their Economics and Government classes for the position titles, said Mike. One reason why Mike liked the pro¬ gram was because it was really interest¬ ing, and I learned how the city handles all matters concerning Portage. The program used to take two days; this year it only took one. Everything was crammed into one day and it was just too short of a period to get the full effect, added Mike. The community and students of the community worked together to add a va¬ riety to life in good ways and in bad. til Student Life

With the beginning of school came football games. With football games came crowds. This crowd reacts to a good play at the Aug. 28 LaPorte game.
