Student Life Romance tonight — ' Just You and T 1 he traditional garter ceremony was the highlight of many guys ' evening. Junior Sam Haines removes sophomore Missy Utterback ' s garter. The special night had finally arrived. After hours of preparation and anticipa¬ tion, couples were arriving at the Porter County Expo Center for an evening of dinner, dancing and excitement. The night was made for couples. The theme, Just You and I, along with the slow music played during dinner, set the mood for romance. People were shocked to see the Prom queen when she was crowned — in a tuxedo! Seniors Shelly Sobczak and her date Dave Pieroni wore matching tuxes to portray a different look. Many Prom-goers agreed that being with a boyfriend or a girlfriend made the evening more special. I had a wonderful time with my girlfriend. It was the best time I ever had with her, said senior Steve Miller. On the other hand, several students found Prom not to be as sentimental as they expected. Maybe I would have had more fun if I would have taken a girl¬ friend instead of just a friend, com¬ mented Mike Whiteman. This was the first year that the tradi¬ tional wine glasses were not given as a memento. Some had complained that such a gift encouraged teens to drink alcoholic beverages from these glasses. Instead of the glasses, bud vases were given to all that attended. Out of the 749 vases ordered, 48 were broken and need¬ ed to be replaced. Many couples were angered and upset to find out they received the dreaded phone call. Barry ' s Photography had a problem with their cameras, and 25-30 couples ' pictures were ruined. A total of about 325 pictures were taken, either of a couple or of an individual. It didn ' t real¬ ly matter that our pictures were ruined, because I had a great time while I was there. That ' s what counts, said junior Phillip Martin.
