Four travel to sectional quarter finals 118 Sports The girls ' tennis pre-season preparation techniques included six weeks of Nautilus, exercise and two miles of running a day. This regimen was designed to teach the girls to learn not only to play like winners, but to think like winners and develop a winning attitude for the team as a whole, hoped Coach Kathy Houpt. The team ' s toughest rival was LaPorte, to which they lost 7-0. An outstanding accomplishment for the girls was the close 4-3 victories over Calumet and Griffith. Sophomore Julie Sampson returns a serve tired to her during warmups. New additions to the team were the coaches. They were Mrs. Sue Hines, a special education math teacher at Grissom, and Mrs. Kathy Houpt, a loreign language teacher from Aylesworth. Two-year letterman Rosemary Kos, sr., returns a torehand to her Lowell opponent. Rosemary and three-year letterman Laura Peterson, sr., teamed up lor doubles and advanced to the quarter final sectional competition in LaPorte. The team also sent seniors Lisa Wilkinson and Marian Lacey for singles to sectionals. Seniors Rosemary Kos and Laura Peterson teamed up as did Suzy Kaiser, jr., and Tina Thielbar, soph., for doubles at sectionals. All four made it to the quarter finals of the sectional competition. Rosemary Kos, sr., commented, We had a lot of fun. We worked good as a team, and we had really good coaching. This year ' s team had some changes from previous seasons. Mrs. Kathy Houpt and Mrs. Sue Hines, both teachers from other Portage schools, became the coaches. Coach Houpt said, It ' s hard to select any individual who stood out above the others, but the team will lose five valuable seniors. We do have some promising returnees. One of the team captains, Laura Peterson, sr., added, This was more of a building up season with our new coaches, who did a great job. We had fun and I hope they do even better next year.
