Page 64 HARTFORD The Plrates got back 1ntow1n column w1tha 32 to 6 vlctory over Hartford The Green and Wh1te defense played heads up ball 1ntercept1ng4 passes recovermg 2 funmbles and scor1ng 3 of 5 P1rate touchdowns B111 K1mball and M1ke Koenen returned passes that they mterc ep ted for touchdowns J1m Lubahn tackled a Hartford ball carr1er on the Hartford 8 where he fumbled The p1gsk1n rolled 1nto the end zone where Lubahn fell on It and scored a TD The 2 other TD s were scored by Jack P6HkW1tZ and R1ch Decker .Tohn DeMer1t added 2 extra po1nts FOOTBALL Homecoming MENOMONEE FALLS The Plrates made the Home Comlng celebrat1on a suc cess by trlrnmmg the Menomonee Falls Indlans 32 6 ball w1th John B1chler scor1ng to top off a 58 yd march As the flrst quarter neared 1ts end Menomonee Falls scored suddenly on a long run by the1r f1ne halfback Tom R1ChaTdSOH The Plrates got rolllng then and added two more touchdowns 1n the second quarter and two 1n the th1rd The last quarter went scoreless Blchler and DeMcr1t each scored two touchdowns and Cherney scored one WEST BEND Port lost a hard fought game to West Bend 13 6 and also the trad1t1ona1 Bulldog whlch has traveled between the two schools s1nce 1929 Port s only score came on a pass 1ntercept1on by Dennls Cherny The Green and Whlte offense couldn t seem to get the1r feet on the ground When they d1d get rolllng some ant1 Plrate referees came up w1th a penalty. KIEL The P1rates opened the 1953 season by trounclng K1el 33 O The f1ne play of the Port defenslve l1ne was largely respons1ble for the vlctory John DeMer1t was hlgh scorer w1th 13 polnts R1Ch Dec ker B111 K1mball and John B1chler each scored one touchdown Tom Kauth tackled a K1el back 1n the end zone to score a safety Port ga1ned a total of 359 yards as compared to 154 yards for Klel The P1 rates also connected on ll out of Z3 passes FCDOTBALL HORLICK Port lost 1ts f1rst game smce 1951 to Rac1ne I-Iorl1ck, 15 O. The game was played 1n a downpour of ra1n, wh1ch greatly ham pered Port's pass1ng attack. Rac1ne scored a safety and touchdown 1n the last 4 mmutes of play. CEDARBURG - In the traditional battle between Port and Cedarburg the bulldogs of Cedarburg downed Port Z0-0. It was a rough and hard- fought game with Cedarburg cashing in on the breaks. Port threatened several tirnes, but never could get their offense rolling enough to score. The Pirates played a very good game, but just couldn't match the Bull- dogs. FOOTBALL WAUPUN The Pirates traveled to Waupun and came home with a victory beating the Prison City ' ll by Z0 7 Port kicked off to Wau pun and on the first play from scrunmage Port recovered a fumble on the Waupun 20 yard l1ne The P1rates advanced to the Waupun 3 yard line and Dave Lebesch drove 1nto the end zone for a score Waupun scored late 1n the second quarter, but mlssed the conversion The P1 rates roared back 1n the second half Wltl John DeMer1t scoring twice WATERTOWN Port foughta val1ant battle with Watertown but came out on the bottom w1th a score of 19 6 .Tohn DeMer1t ran the opening kickoff the length of the f1eld for a touchdown The Goslings scored three times inthe f1rst quarter to stun Port After this the game settled into a bitter duel w1th Port threating several tunes but were unable to SCOT8 B' TEAM Port s B team, which is organ1zed for the purpose of produc1ng future varsity stars played five games this year Although winning none they gained valuable experience Page 65 i - . . . o 0 Il -. . - I O on end runs. ,, ll 9 - U - ' ' ' . . , . . . . . , .
