Through the hard work of the school board members. Principals, and teach- ers, changes are made each year to keep pace with the need of students in a chan- ging world. The duties of the board have to do with matters that will improve the education of children and the teaching conditions for the staff. These matters include the school building program and the maintenance of buildings, teacher's salaries and gaining of public support for school budgets. 1987-88 Gulf County School Board-Ted Whitfield. During the 1987 football season, a Shark team consisting of only six seniors as well as a large number of Freshmen and Sopho- mores displayed great potential as they worked to build a team to be proud of. In spite of the number of losses, this young Shark team and its coaches remained deter- mined and high-spirited. The Sharks began their season with an exciting victory over the Wewahitchka Gators, a team picked by the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT to beat the Sharks 35-13. The Sharks scored another big win over Apalachicola. Other successes included wins over the Havana Gladiators and the Mariana Bulldogs. This spirited Shark team took on such rivals as the Rutherford Rams, a class AAAA team; the Monticello Tigers, the defending Dis- trict Champions; and Florida High, a team ranked in the top 5 in class AA. The Sharks ended the season with a 4-6 record. With only six graduating seniors, and with forty lettermen and eighteen starters returning next year; the team, coaches, and fans look forward to the 1988 season. BELOW: Kevin kicks off to a victory. Jr. High Football Productive Season The Jr. High Football Team struggled through the '87 season. They had a very young team without much experience. The end result was a total of one win and five losses. The high point of their season was against Apalachicola. It was the only win for the young team, but the Sharks were a hard hitting team. The wrestling team not only in- creased in size, but also in quality. St. Joe started a young but strong team. With each match the team matured and became more competitive. Before Christmas break, the team struggled at 1-2, but after the Bay Tournament the team flourished with five wins, a tie and just two losses. The Sharks finished the season 3-3-1 in the District and 6-4-1 overall. In the District tournament the Sharks finished 4th in District 1-AAA. This year's edition sent one wrestler, Ivey Henderson, to the state tournament with a 17-3 record. Other outstanding wrestlers this year were: Keith Cooksey, 13-4; Terry Goldsmith, 12-5-1; Dusty Ballard. 10-6; Steven R. Howell, 13-5; and Ross Yowell, 11-7. This year's wres- tling team did not win every match, but were competitive in all. RIGHT: Ivey goes “psycho” on a Wakulla opponent. FRONT ROW: Bobby Henson. Terry Goldsmith. The season was full of optimism and surprizes along with some ups and downs. The sharks had a 7-13 record and finished second in the district standings after the regular season. The Sharks line- up consisted of two returning seniors and one junior that had a full season of exper- ience before the 1988 season, the remaining players were ninth and tenth graderes with little experience. The Sharks chalked up victories against Sneads. Apalach, Carabelle. Blountstown, and Wakulla. “I knew going into this sea- son that this was the youngest team to ever start at Port St. Joe High School. Playing a competitive 20 game schedule with one ex- perienced pitcher scared me at first, but we had some young kids that responded well. For you to love while she lives, and mourn when she is dead. It may be six or seven years, or twenty-two or three, but will you, 'til I call her back, take care of her for me? She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and shall her stay be brief, you'll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return, but there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true, and from the throngs that crowd life's lane. I have selected you. Now will you give her all your love, nor think the labor vain, nor hate me when I come to call, to take her back again. I fancied that I heard them say, “Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joy thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter her with tenderness, we'll love her while we may: and for the happi- ness we’ve known, will ever grateful stay. But shall the angels call her much sooner than we planned, we’ll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand! 144
