,c K, I T But individuals were not the only ones to gain recognition. Athletic teams cooperated in bringing the name of Port Richmond High School to the fore and keeping it there. ln athletics, titles have been won in basketball, golf and bowling. For the two court seasons H937-38 and i938-39l Minstrel basketball teams have had the divisional championship flag of the P. S. A. L. hoisted high on the Port Richmond halyard. Warren Fenley, Joe Reno, Tom Smillie, Tom de la Pena, and .lack Barbour were some of the members of the varsity teams lsland diadems of varied sorts have adorned the collective brows of this school s bowling teams ever since a local high school league was launched amid strikes and spares and pop bottles ifor drinking not throwing purposesl two years ago And in the spring of 38 the golfers those gents who drive a hooked club at a small white ball with such seriousness and dexterity achieved fame swinging their way from the lsland championship on to the higher sounding and more pretentious title of Champions of the City of New York An interscholastic sport was revived in New York City two years ago after a brief layoff and Port Richmond chipped in with its contributory fenc ing squad ln the i939 campaign the sextet finished on the fringes of the equator of Group l in the P S A L The soccer team continued to fight against the unequal odds of lack of consistent practice and lack of a field which they could honestly call their own and with this handicap taken into consideration the booters more than held their own especially against lsland rivals Although it is not customary to pay as much recognition to girls athletics as to boys we must here tip our hats to the Girls Health Educa tion Department and to the chairman Miss Dorothy Zirbes ln i936 the girls won the L Edgerton Winthrop Trophy for the fifth consecutive year and continued to win it in the following years for having the greatest membership in girls athletic clubs in proportion to the total enrollment of girls in the school Yes the voyage is over The passengers disperse to their homes lt is hail and farewell We are leaving and only fond memories remain Just as our heroes and their achievements have succeeded those of the preceding classes so will ours be replaced by those of the younger genera tion of incoming freshmen But to us the best will always be our own From wave to wave the world has but one tale to tell Save this one cry of Farewell 2:51 1. 5- AES A Zidfffvln ' ' I ll ll ' ' 1 I I - I . . . . . . fl Fftys ,f K CLASS HISTORY OUR years ago the academic shnp of Port Rlchmond Hlgh School the vessel Mlnstrel embarked on an eventful trap lt was In l936 ln February and again In September that groups of bewildered elementary school grad uates came on board the good ship Mmstrel and were steered safely unto harbor by their pnlots Mass Gertrude Gale and Mrs Agnes Larkun The voyage was rough ln places storms yes gales at tnmes made It seem as nf port would never be reached However the shore as rn saght the voyage nears :ts end and the passengers chat about their remunxscences wrlt ten ln the log for the perusal of others ln December of the year l936 the class participated ln their flrst and unfortunately only Class Day However overshadownng thus dusapponntment came the news that Port Richmond was to have an addutnon For several weeks the tranquil lnfe of our school days was upset by the raucous poundnng and chuggmg of motors ln the fall of l938 history was made' Mr Wulllam Halloran our prlncupal stepped behund the controls of a steam shovel and of flcrally started constructlon of the new buuldlng This wasn t to prove a dream either for before the June class graduated the new llbrary and girls gymna slum were opened for use lt took a l94O student to make a record un the classroom The student was Joseph Maloy who not only achreved the hughest mduvldual average ln the hnstory of thus school wnth a standung of 99 2511 but also won second place In the National League of Natlons Contest In has sensor year Despite these achlevements Maloy somehow found time to be edltor rn chref of Crow s Nest for three terms to be vlce presldent of the General Organnza tlon and to be president of the Sensor Arlsta When Maloy graduated Jack Levy took the reuns of our school news paper Norma Steen was the edutor un chief of the l939 Issue of Pernagua whnch was manned almost exclusively by l94O graduates whale Warren Relger was at the wheel of the Spanrsh publncatuon El Faro ln the Arista Evelyn Beckvar held down the posltlon of vlce president and Cecelia Gumllar the post of secretary Holdung sxrmlar posts as their Immediate successors were Lena Sutera and Grace Egbert Warren Fenley asude from has basketball talents exhnblted prowess nn the polntlcral fleld also garnlng the post of presldency of the General Organs zatlon and then benng re elected agaln the following term lt was during thus perlod that the Confederation of Island Hugh Schools founded by Port Richmond was further developed Another phase of our student government was the G O Cabinet on which Rnchard Wresner Ruth Salter Regina Feeney Rose Perelka Dons McLees and Karl Schmendler held posntlons 1 Il - ll - - - I ' I I I - - Il - 11 - 1 1 , . . They were voted teach ers pets l Thus generosity was practiced to keep the round red marks off their report cards no doubt' A male and female member of the crew were both blessed by nature wlth exceedlngly good looks and they had just reason to be a lnttle proud of lt So Margot Carlson and Peter Henz recognized as the best looking shared each other s congratulatlons Dorothy Surko and Danrel Rosen lt seems were the llght steppers snatched the tltles of the best dancers Also nn the lnne of talent were Evelyn Beckvar and Joseph Tlrone Who doesn t know they were voted the class actors?
