The dictionary definition of Dedicate is . . . to inscribe or address to a patron, or friend, by way of honor or compli- ment. Our dedication of this War Whoop to Mr. Jerry Tucker covers much more than iust that. It is a warmer, more per- sonal thing than a dictionary meaning can possibly express. And it comes from the bottom of our hearts. To us, Mr. Tucker is a good friend, someone each of us can turn to, know- ing that his decisions, advice, and assist- ance will be individualized, sympathetic and fair. To us, he really is a counselor . . . in name and deed! All through the years, student interests have been Mr. Tucker's interests too. This warm attitude is illustrated by the indivi- duals and organizations with which he deals directly. He helped organize the Hi-Y Club, and until 1958, he taught Eng- lish ll, American History and Texas His- tory. At that time he became counselor of our high school. And so with hearts humble with grati- tude, we of the War Whoop staff dedi- cate our 1960 War Whoop to you, Mr. Jerry Tucker. Derhczzfmu

From the standpoint of society, people may be divided into leaders and follow- ers. There are leaders in every profession, community, state, and nation, and there are also followers who far outnumber the leaders. The position of a leader is not one of great power, but rather a burden of responsibility which one has been chosen to bear. One's election to a high office does not assure success as a lead- er. One has not yet reached the height of achievement, he has only been afforded an opportunity to prove himself a good leader. Leadership is a compound of many qualities, the most important of which are the ability and willingness to accept re- sponsibility, a spirit of humility, the de- sire to initiate, a feeling of self-confi- dence, a sense of fairness, and an abund- ance of courage. Courage is the spark that keeps ambition's fire burning. True courage gives us the incentive to do bet- ter than has been done before. To some of us, these following pages will make up the last volume in our high school careers. As we thumb through the pages, we shall always remember the good times as well as the bad, the happi- ness as well as the heartaches. Of course the foremost thought in our minds will be what we have gained in the years of hard work. But, while knowledge is proud that he has learned so much, wisdom is humble that he knows no more. Throughout our lives we shall strive to meet our goals, not only as leaders, but as followers as well. ln fulfilling our careers let us keep in mind that he who only plans is a dreamer. He who only works is a drudge. But he who plans and works is a conqueror. Q2-WW President
