The concept of sportsmanship, however, reaches far beyond the athletic field. It is an ideal which each new generation must learn to cherish, for it is the essence of democracy. It means fair play for all with whom we deal in our day to day living , it means respect for the rules wherever we are and in whatever activity we are engaged , it means honesty, the basic ingredient , it means always giving your best, and it means a graceful acceptance of the results, whatever they may be. Today, the people of the world have' come to realize that this ideal is a principle which may be used as a guide for enduring world rela- tions. For rivalry is but one ingredient of sportsmanship, but what sports- manship teaches us is far more important. Ex Lfbffsmt-li U ggi 'T .fin K Nxhv if -Q ,, .., . Q . A 1 ' Port Jervis High School if J X 7 ,shL A J J Port Jervis, New York A , , A A To the members of the Class of 1956 go our hearti- ' A 9 f o I est congratulations on the completion of your high . . . A school courses of study. l am sure that you realize by A . X now how brief your stay with us has been. lt is our , Z- hope that it has been not only a happy and enjoy- . - able one but a most worthwhile one as well. Each year g . X we approach Commencement with mixed feelings be- . Q - cause we regret to see you leave and at the same time A we are happy that you have been successful in com- X pleting your work here. On the whole, we are very proud of you and the 'accomplishments you have made, . but as you leave us we would like to feel that you have gained a certain amount of know-how and the ability to apply it to some constructive and useful end. Sometime ago someone said about-a certain person that he knew how to do much better than he did do. I think it has to be recognized that most of us know how to do things better than we do them. This is often clue to conditions beyond our control, never- theless, I hope that your training here'will help you to do most of the things you may undertake as well as your knowledge and ability will permit. And, now as you leave us to go on to other achievements, l want to wish you the vest best of everything that life has to offer. Cordially yours. MR. Envm R. FLETCHER Superintendent of Schools .
