Mr. Mateyak came to Port Jervis in the fall of 1950 to teach World History. He became assistant coach of the football team and head coach of the basketball team. Everything he engaged in was done with pride and accuracy. His feeling was that if a task was worth doing, it was worth doing to the best of one's ability. In all instances, Mr. Mateyak proved to be a man of high standards, character, and ability. It didn't take him long to become familiar with Port Jervis and its people. In his endeavor to promote community activity, he worked with the Y.M.C.A., the Littlelleague and the Dutch Reform Church. J ' He was a just, modest, and decent American. He lived his life as he played his sports, hard but cleanly, with the idea always in mind to set a good example for his followers. On January 24, 1955, Mr. Paul Mateyak departed to a fuller and richer life. His absence touches the hearts of many and leaves an emptiness in our school. The sure belief that God has a greater need for him, eases the ache in our hearts. We can do no less than to cherish his memory, for whatever may have been his accomplishments, we are his inheritors.
