Always interested in en- gineering, he took his studies seriously. At 19, he 'want- ed to go places and see things , so the life of the sea gripped him for 50 years. But , said he, 'the sea is for a young man, so I quit and built a marine shop in Corpus Christi just as that port was starting to develop. Later I came to Port Isabel and saw its possibilities and built a shop here, which was in 1928 . He plans to stay. Mr. La.Moore has received the higxest certificate issued by the United States Department of Cormnroe, that of Chief En- gineer cf Ocean Going Vessels. He held the record at the time for having completed his examination with 'Very Ex- cellent' rating in the mortest time possible. At, '75, his hearing is perfect am his eye is accurate. 0n one occa- sion, the author saw him with one jerk each draw tour red hot bars into perfect right angle. He dared the author test with a square, but In knew better. Mr. LaMoore's hobby is pets. He has ducks, geese pigeons, and guinea fowls that :ntch their young under his work benches. 66

QP 6 980464 lt doesn't take a big town to have interesting people, and good people, in fact, it doesn't take a town at all But we have a town that is a town but not a big town, and we have Miss Maggie Valent NN Frank M La Roche al lnteresting people, and good people, too Miss Maggie's father who lived to be lOO years old was born in Palma Mayorce, Spaln, ln 1822 He came to Port Isabel in 1884 where he later started in the fishing bus iness with three salling vessels, La Linda, El Mar, and El Mundo Ferdinand VII was King of Spain at the time M Valent left Spaln Mr Valent was a member of the Con federate Army Miss Maggle was born in Port Isabel November 22, 1888 As a child, she was wide awake, and now remembers many interest ing things 1D Port lsabel's history Mlss Maggie was Chair man of the Red Cross for this section durlng the first World War She is public spirlted and does a great deal of Charity work She 1s an accomplished seamstress and artist in waxing flowers and creating designs on textile materials His father, Daniel Constance LaRoche, was brought to Brazos Santiago Pass a prisoner of war in 1860 H stole a yawl boat from the captain's ship, a barrel of water, some hard tack and a compass, and escaped by sailing up the Rio Grande River After the war, he settled at Point Isabel and brought his family here where Frances was born, November 25, 1889 and has raised and helped en people, one of wifen, accord ing to Mr LaRoche, was a better fisherman than he was be cause she caught a 7 ft tarpon Mr LaRoche is the father of eleven children two more He had to keep busy He has seen tertain on fishing parties some illustrious whom was President Warren G Harding, nwhose Mr LaRoche operated the Casino Boat line from Port Isabel to Padre Island for two and one half years, has been and still is a boat builder, has served as Master and Engineer for the United States Army and worked with the first dredge ever to work in the Pass Mr LaRoche knows the history of Port Isabel and he likes Port Isabel, tool as ' 0 .. At the tlne he W25 working Cn the Dredge Beg that dug the channel here at Port Isabel. Bernie said, NI stayed with the dredge for two years and then started fishing. I had a llttle QO2i named H-g11yN made out of fourteen foot lumber. 1 flsheo cy myself for about two years and decided tc QOIIU the f1Sh business.
