The color- ful float with flapping wings and flirting eyes, steals the spot lights. Prop crew members be- gan preparing Mother Goose on September 16, for her star performances in the Homecoming pa- rade. Big Reds Bandboosters float puts the spotlights on our Victory Bell. 6 Floats Juniors ' The Old Lady in The Shoe strides into second place. As the Old Lady peeks out the back window to look at her competition Hickory Dickory Dock chimes into third place for the Sophomore class. As the mouse runs up the clock, the clock strikes four, for the Fresh- men and poor old Humpty Dumpty. Floats 7 Senior Grand It seemed like it was only yes- terday when we entered high school as Freshmen, full of all sorts of different ideas about how we would spend the next four years of our lives. Everyone seemed so towering in size com- pared to us little freshmen. The threat of ' ' Freshmen Kill-Day was always on our minds. In 1979, we were at two dif- ferent schools: PHHS and PHCHS. No one had any idea that we would merge into only one school. Here, at PHHS, our 1979 homecoming float entered com- petition with the theme of Toys . We placed fourth with our Choo Choo Train. Simultaneously, at Central, the class of 82 built homecoming walls, the theme being The Four Seasons . Proudly, it tied for third place. In 1980, the theme at PHHS for the float competition was The Muppets . Our Sophomore year must have brought out our spirit and coordination. We placed second with Ernie and Oscar the Grouch. Central ' s 1980 walls were based on the Holidays theme. We triumphantly built a giant As we crowded together for our final appearance of our high school years we gathered behind the Port Huron Fire Hall for our class picture. Fond memo- ries of high school days went through Seniors Finale Valentines heart with Cupid shooting his arrow and took sec- ond place also. The 1980-81 school year brought us up a step on the lad- der as we became Juniors. But this year also brought something else: split sessions. Though split sessions were the worst thing that ever happened to Port Huron High, there were also good things that came out of it — like the merging of two schools which gave us all the opportunity to meet new friends! Classrooms were occu- pied with weary students from 6:40 a.m. until 5:25 p.m. and our sports were taken away from us, but somehow we managed to adjust. Now the class of 82 is the Senior class. Mother Goose took off flying into first place, and we have a winning football team. We finally put our cross- town rivals. Northern Huskies, in their place and we let the whole community know it! Now as we look back on our Senior year and everything we have accomplished during our high school years, we wonder, as we did as Freshmen, what the world holds in store for us. our minds. Remembering the embarrass- ing times as freshmen, the exciting times as sophomores, the glorious days of our junior year, and finally our senior year helped all of us to grow. Seniors The Day the Parade Was Made Brad Dickey, Teresa Shank, and Marcia Ruff ride in a truck in the Homecoming parade. Mr. Burgess supervises the egg toss during the Homecoming games. 10 Homecoming Determined Stacey Reynolds catches the egg but misses the yolk. Smiling Mary Crimmins, Ann Breidnich, Mary Anne Kruse, and Chris Horbes watch the homecoming games. Cheerleaders Karen Novar, Beth Hooper, Anna Prax, Petra Dickerson, Denise Nadeau, and Carol Phillips provide sound effects during the homecoming parade. 11 Homecoming 1. Seniors win Tug-of-War! 2. Mighty Larry Thelmas is looking for an outlet on the side- line. Sophomore, Troy Dixon pulls for a shot up from the baseline. Not one member of the J.V. Bas- ketball team has ever played on a high school level before. The team votes on a new captain every game so every player has a chance to be captain. Semelsberger feels that East Detroit game was the best played because of the defensive line. Key play- ers were Larry Thelmas, Troy Dixon, Aaron Hauenstein, B.J. Sanderson, Steve Phillips and Bill Gilbert. Varsity Jumps Into Action 60 Varsity Basketball Freshman Wendell Callahan shows us his good style in throwing in a technical shot. Off to the side Ter- ry Renaker tries hard for a good sharp pass. Forward Ron Ed- wards shoots from the top of the key in the New Haven Game. Center Howard Reynolds pulls up for a jumper against Mt. Clemens. Coach Boldon ' s Big Red Bas- ketball Defensive Philosophy is one simple statement: Do unto others before they do unto you. This year Boldon has taught his team that good defense is a real signal of pride. Although this year ' s record has been poor, next year promises to be much improved. 4V Varsity Basketball 61 Top Row, Dwan Lindsay, Art Dixon, Howard Reynolds, Terry Renaker, Wendell Callahan, Doug Lohr, Eric Bolden, Fred Revenue Bottom Row, Charles Jemison, Paul Prax, Dave Ver- non, Mike Gibson, Corry Banks and Manager Danny Wilson. Gaining varsity experience is Wendell Callahan who drive the outside land during the Mt. Clemens game for an easy two pointer. Corry Banks looks on in the back court ready to move of- fensively or defensively as need- ed. Coach Bolden stressed, ball control as a key factors in offen- sive basketball. When you have the chance to play ' Breakdown basketball do it. Working for a good shot without turning over the ball is the key to a good of- fensive game. For both offense and defense you must have good rebound control. In pres- sure situations its better to go with a high percentage shot. Underclassmen on this years team will be much improved next season. 62 Varsity Basketball Set to Conquer Conquering was not a habitual act for the Junior Varsity Volleyball team. The team ac- complished many things through out the year with learn- ing and improving the basic skills as a main goal. Also, team- work was an important factor for this year ' s team. Practices helped to prepare the girls for the game. These usually consisted of running laps, spik- ing, bumping and setting drills, repetition serving, and playing matches. Though this was tiring, it was well worth the task as it kept the team in condition and good health. At left freshman Mo Koerber gets ready for her teammate Tori Hartman ' s setup in hopes of spiking it at her op- ponent. This resulted in Port Huron High ' s first varsity volleyball wins. 64 Varsity Volleyball Coach Arlene Elliott, Becky Lapine, Vicki Aguinaga, Lisa Jacobson, Kim Tinsley, Janie Driggers, Jill Wager, Dawn Wogtoszek, Loradean Jones, Julie Brown, Diane Hamlin, Nicki Berro, Brenda Vincent, Judy Polechonski (Captain). Varsity Volleyball 65 The Curtain Rises on the Director and Assistants Big Red country is fortunate to have such a dedicated leader as Mr. Wydrzynski! Mr. Payton. Chet Wydrzynski was born in Detroit and attended North East- ern High School in Detroit. He attended Wayne State for four years, Michigan State and Uni- versity of Michigan both for one year. He also served in the Army for three years. Before coming to Port Huron High School he taught English, Social Studies, Latin, and coached track and football at Northern High School in De- troit. He became a Big Red in 1968. The behavior and the spir- it of our students is what he likes best about his job. Assistant Principal John Ufford says it for all Big Reds, Chet Wydrzynski is the most dedicated school administrator that I have ever worked with. k 4 66 Principal Principal Chet Wydrzynski stated that Tim Haynes, ' ' works hard, is dedicated to his humanity and loves kids. Mrs. Biddle also states that Haynes is, a good Assistant Principal, who backs up teachers, and is fair with the kids. Tim Haynes was born in Ann Arbor. He went to Port Huron High School and then went to college. He attended five different colleges in eight years. His first line of work was the ministry, but he quit so he could be closer to kids. He has been our Assistant Principal for eight years, and loves his job, especially now that we have sports. Mr. Haynes ' favorite sport is football. Some of his hobbies are: jogging, handball, fishing, and gardening. Who do you see every schoolday? Who is a friend to every student? Who disciplines you, but always gives you a fair chance? No, it ' s not your mom, it ' s Mr. Ufford. Mr. Ufford is one of P.H.H.S. ' s assistant principals. A few of his responsibilities are equipment inventory, the buildings activities, discipline, and more he ' s our friend. Mr. Ufford said t hat P.H.H.S. is the best building he has ever worked at. It ' s biggest asset over other schools is the students. He feels that P.H.H.S. has a super bunch of students. He said that when anyone walks into our school they can see the friendly Big Red spirit, and when we see Mr. Ufford we can see he really cares. Our third assistant principal is Mr. Lyszak. His main job here at Port Huron High is doing all the schedules for the students and teachers. He ' s the man who decides if you get the classes that you ' ve signed up for. Mr. Lyszak also deals with discipline prob- lems. Mr. Lyszak came to us from that other Port Huron high school, but now we are sure he is a true Big Red. Currently, he is completing a doctorate in Educational Administration at Wayne State University in Detroit. Assistant Principals 67 Counselors Write the Script The counselors main jobs revolve around the occupational, educational, and social aspects of school life. Occupational means the career resource center. Edu- cational would include schedul- ing, preparing for college and testing. Social means the stu- dents personal problems. The counselors have many problems they deal with daily. They get very frustrated when students fake an illness or are constantly tardy and come for a pass. They could use their time more wisely by helping students who want to excell in school. They work hard each and every day making this school a more enjoyable place to spend the day. The head custodian is Alex Dortman. Mr. Dortman has been at Port Huron High for almost twenty-five years. The custodians work around the clock cleaning, polishing, and preparing the school for the everyday events that take place. The cooks here at Port Huron High School do not directly cook the food for our lunches. Michelle Pelc, Kelly Bauman, Kelly Hurley, Ruth Warren, Debbie Dubrowlowski, and Rhonda Ellsworth with folders and Sandy Phillips and Fred Belger wear logos. 122 Student Life Loyal Big Red students think P.H.H.S. is 1. They try to convey this message by dis- playing their school spirit on jackets. About ninety-five percent of all P.H.H.S. stu- dents show their school spirit by wearing these jackets. Tony Porritt models his Big Red jacket with pride. Debbie Dobrolowski is so proud of her P.H.H.S. jacket that she said she ' d wear it everywhere. Does that include wearing it to bed? Their enthusiasm increased school spirit throughout the year. 158 Cheerleaders To Raise School Spirit Junior Varsity cheerleaders had an excellent year with prac- tices almost every day after school. They gained strength and skill to become a very strong squad. With Captain Ka- ren Novar and Co-Captain Carol Phillips the team progressed through the year. This year J-V Cheerleader ' s performed at pa- rades, football games, pep assem- blies, and J. V. Basketball games. J. V. Cheerleaders 159 Pied Pipers of PH Our school has three bands, the Cadet Band, the Varsity Band, and the Honors Band. The Cadet band is made up of just freshmen. Each band stu- dent entering Port Huron High must go through the Cadet band before being accepted into the Var- sity or Honors Bands. Next is the Varsity band that is primarily sophomores. Some sophomores, howev- er, who are exceptionally good, are accepted right into the Honors band which is primarily juniors and seniors. Each band plays at their own spring concert and at the annual Bandtastic ' s show. The Honors band, when combined with the numerous girls groups in the school, is turned into the Marching Machine. This group, of 223 hard work- ing students, performs at all home football games, and at most home basketball games. They also march in various parades through out Michigan and Canada. All three bands are conducted by Mr. Payton who has been the band director at P. H. for the past fourteen years. 160 Band The Marching Machine has traveled to places such as Germany, to perform at the summer Olympics, The Hudson Day Parade in Detroit, New York City, Walt Disney World, and this year was invited to perform at the Super Bowl Parade. Mr. Payton has been a big asset to the three bands and also the entire school. Many thanks is given him for his sup- port and devotion to the school and the community. Stajarmy means stage army. Stajarmy ' s job is to make sure the Machine has all the equipment they need when they perform. If it wasn ' t for the stajarmy the Machine would be in complete chaos. These days, money for college is becoming harder and harder to find. Except for people who look in today’s Army. The Army combines good-sized college benefits with a short two-year enlistment. So you could accumulate thousands of dollars for college and be home to use it in just two years. Y ' ou’ll also bring home the kind of maturity that can help in college. So, if you’re in a hurry to earn money for school, consider the Army’s two-year enlistment. It can get yo u money for college before you even start to lose your study habits. Yearbook Staff 207 The Grand Finale The 1981-82 year has been one Great Performance. Traditions and spirit set the stage as the year went on. The traditional scene of fine sports was carried on as the whole school participated eager- ly in pep assemblies and single sessions. The whole student body wel- comed sports back after a one year absence. School began with our first pep assembly. As the fight song was played the seniors stood to show their loyality. Then, the underclassmen stood following the leadership of the senior class. Our Varsity cheerleading team went to the Silverdome in Com- petition. They competed against 87 top cheerleading squads, bringing home a fifth place tro- 208 Closing Review phy to add to our brimming tro- phy case. Returning to the foot- ball field was the Big Red Marching Machine which per- formed to a drum corp move- ment titled, If you Believe. This brought the fans to their feet. Competing in three pa- rades, the Machine took two firsts and one third place.
