A major factor in the teams success was it ' s tenacious style of defense, combined with an occasionally explosive offense. Seniors Howard Price and Don Rich where the leading tacklers for 1979 and where rewarded as all league selections. Senior Ken Lewis was rewarded for his ef- forts on the offensive line as he was selected to the 1st team all league. Junior Mike Eastwood earned 2nd team recognition from his defensive end position. Five Big Reds received honorable mention Tom Ceglarek, Mike Bourque, Jeff Diggins, Kevin Watson, and Steve Sax. The Big Reds offense was severly ham- pered by the loss of it ' s star run- ning back Steve Sax for the sec- ond half of the season, due to a shoulder injury. The highlight of the year was a 7-6 win over the Mt. Clemens Bathers. Picture 1. Steve Sax takes the hand-off and cuts inside against Royal Oak Shrine. 2. Ron Chis- holm returns the punt. 3. Clemens rivalry. It is one of the oldest in the state. For the last 17 years the Bathers have dominat- ed, but in 1979 it was the Big Reds who took the brown jug home. Port Huron trailed at the half 6-0, but the Big Reds took the 2nd half kickoff and marched down the field for a touchdown. John Paciorek taking it in on a 1 yard quarterback sneak, and adding the extra point gave the Big Reds a 7-6 lead. Thanks to an outstanding defensive effort PH held on to win 7-6. She scored a total of 184 points, aver- aging 8.7 points per game. Terry and Roni Lloyd added to the teams offense averaging 6 and 6.8 points per game respectively. Picture 1. ??? 2. The team ' s two victories came against Algonac (24-10), and Roseville (33-17). At the end of the first marking period, the sports and other ac- tivities, for the three high schools, were in financial trouble. In a desperate attempt to save all of these programs, a walk-a-thon type fund raising effort was orga- nized. Thanks to a tremendous job by the newly founded boost- ers ' clubs, faculties, and students of the three schools, it was a suc- cess. Picture 1. The team finished the year with an overall record of 7-9. The year was highlighted by an upset win over Port Huron Northern, by a 2-1 margin. The key to this team was their ability to play as a team. These high hopes and expectations failed to materi- alize as the team finished 12-9 overall and fourth in the league. The 1980 Junior Varsity basket- ball team established themselves as a team almost completely on the running game. They ran at every opportunity and then some. The basic reason for this style of play was their general lack of size. Due to the number of returning seniors on varsity, four junior guards elected to play on the junior varsity team for more game experience. The team fin- ished the season with an overall record of 6 wins, and 1 1 losses.
