Assisting him are his three “under chiefs Mr. Nauit, Mr. Moeller, and Mr. Smith. We reach to these four men for the rules and privileges as- sociated with being a student at P.H. H.S. Another important part of the ad- ministration is the counseling de- partment. Led by the coolest guy around, Mr. Frost : Miss Brocken, Mr. Harwood, Mr. Ufford, Miss Welch, and Mr. Wendling do their best to direct our time and abilities toward the goals we have picked in life. The people we have contact with the most are from the faculty. They are the ones who teach us a trade, or prepare us for college. Now The STUDENT presents the 1972 faculty. Mr. Chester S. For the student who goes on to col- lege, typing can really come in handy for those term papers. The student who prefers to go right into the job market has office machines, and various other classes like retailing, shorthand, data processing, and bookkeeping to help him be top notch in what ever profession he goes into. All classes are taught by first class teachers like Mr. Miller, Mrs. Grimes, Miss Miller, Mr. White, Mr. Winters, and Mr. Verran. Mr. Miller instructs his class in the correct style of typing. Pm rather sorey i didn t habe bin for typong. Oh, well. Rhonda Peck understands that looking at those keys can in- crease her speed, but it is so hard not to look! Shorthand re- quires concentration and skill with a writing implement. Coats and books are piled out of the way so more room is made while dictation is being taken in this shorthand class. Expertly taught by Mr. Richard Hillaker and Mr. Mike Maul, students learn the proper driving tech- nique as well as good sportsmanship on the road. The course consists of class work, range driving, and experience on the road. Everyone is drilled with the fact that the course is Driver’s Education and NOT Driver’s Training. Remember the old saying you train dogs not people. Jeff Tanton studies very hard, because this is one course you don’t want to fail. Right? RIGHT. Mike Wolford takes one of the tests. How would a school ever be able to survive without them? The Student 1972 salutes them and says “thank you”. Student Life, what is it? It’s all the little things that happened during the year. The things we might have forgotten about, but without them the school year would be boring and uneventful. Bill Copeland in Sarasota Florida’s JOURNAL says: “How strange to use ‘You only live once’ as an excuse to throw it away.” Our life at Port Huron High is very important. We must not throw these years away by not getting involved and doing our best. We will never get the chance to relive one sec- ond of our time here. Don’t waste it. REACH OUT! The day began with a flourish of car- nations, football programs, news- papers, and cries of, “But I’m broke!” Later, the band, Thunderbirds, color guard, majorettes pose for photo- graphers; then floats and cars prepare for a parade through downtown. The benches in the student commons and across from the cafeteria give many students a chance to relax from their busy schedules. Patty Beach, under all that hair, takes it easy on her way to school by bus. A nice long walk down the strip to school in the fall could almost put anyone to sleep . . . Except if there was a pep assembly like this one with the Northern cheerleaders. The benches in the courtyards are an asset to any young couple. And when the NHS sells carnations why not give one to a FRIEND? Finally what could be more relaxing than carving out one of these pumpkins into a scary face? Stided Actu Uia A student’s life is filled with many ac- tivities. Mr. Wydrzynski got up at 5:30 a.m. just to see the Big Red’s Marching Machine off down to Detroit for the Hudson’s parade. Then the Evening of One-Act Come- dies we had put on by the Drama Club. The Big Red’s Stage Band played dur- ing the Mexican dinner too. DOWN WITH NORTHERN-what more could we say? WOW! That about sums it all up in one word. WOW! 53 y.H.H.S. u Ou ojf 7iUt Association with each other in the halls is important. So is the relationship between teach- ers and students. This young visitor might someday be a student in these very halls; he might even have this same classroom. Who Knows? He might attend an assembly and be elected like Dave Frei- ger to be a part of a little fun. If he is lucky like these students he may leave sixth hour and and go home a little earlier than everyone else. Wouldn’t he be surprised if he walked into class and found Mr. Hodge as he is here? I’m sure he’d be a part of the annual Walkathon and proba- bly will make a few walks to McDonald’s. And if he’s not so smart he will join the yearbook staff and puzzle over things like Anne Fleckenstein. 9ibb£ ■ ■ .asueSt r.- tti. Perhaps the Big Red March- ing Machine is the most famous of the PHHS organizations. Many clubs provide time to enjoy such favorite pasttimes as chess and photography. The most important of the organiza- tions is the Student Council. They try to provide the necessary leader- ship for the school. Football, Wres- tling, Cross-Country, Golf, Tennis, Track, Baseball, and Basketball keep all of us-faculty, administration, students, and alumni-united. Recall cold nights in Memorial Stadium, watching our boys run two and a half miles, crowding into home court stands, and seeing the high-speed action of a tennis match. Competition for the boys is important too. There are the many practices, invitational meets, and games. There are the trials of wondering if it’s really all the trouble and then knowing it is when the game is won. REACH OUT THROUGH ATH- LETICS. Thanks to the Times Herald. The football season was one of the best in many years. On the following pages are some of the players and some of the highlights of the ’71 season. We would like to give our thanks to the Port Huron Times Herald for the use of these pictures. We find Hillary Thigpen going in for one of our touchdowns. Bet Hill had an awful stuffy stomach after that hit. In the Northern game Byron Dabney picked off this pass that was meant for Alex Dalrymple. Dave Ceglarek puts the ’ole pig skin into the air with tre- mendous pass protection. Dave Ceglarek again shows his runnig ability (and acrobatic ability) going in for the PAT in a game. 92 UmUif ' i JLut ! Varsity Football Opponet P.H. Warren-Mott 14 0 Sterling Hghts. 0 40 Mt. They run up and down a court, taking balls from the opponent and scoring two points for a field goal. Should someone get a little pushy or pull an error, his victim gets a free shot at the basket. Actually, the senior year is the most stimulating year of all. Of course, in order to get much out of their senior year, they must put what they can into it. As Seniors they will be one of the greatest classes Port Huron High School has ever seen. They have the enthusiasm that will carry them far. Their overwhelming spirit is displayed in everything they attempt. Smlou The Port Huron High School Class of 1972 leaves in June. Throughout their four years they have reached out in everything. Sue Saunders reach- es out to promote spirit among fel- low seniors. Reach out for success. Smol tka 0 1 72 The Senior class of 1972 looks back on their years, sometimes fondly, some- times reluctantly, but with the knowl- edge that they will miss old friends and favorite teachers. Led by their officers, they set a ster- ling example of organization and unity to their underclassmen. To those who have supervised us, we say “thank you.” To those who have guided us, we want you to know our gratitude. To those who have taught us we say a very special “thank you.” We will never forget your wisdom. As we look back on our high school years, we realize, even though we will be glad to graduate and begin new lives, that we will miss old friends; friends who have helped us, who have been our companions. We are leaving them to make new ones, but their memory will always last. As the leaders of the school, we pass our torch of leadership onto the up-and-coming leaders of tomorrow, the class of 1973. Theirs is an awesome responsibility for they must live up to the outstanding char- acter and vibrant spirit of the now-graduating class of 1972. Ours now becomes a world of tomorrows, of new responsibilities, of new objectives. The world will be ours to govern, and ours to discover, but we first must discover ourselves. Then, and only then, can we give to others that of ourselves which was meant to be given. Now, as we say goodbye to all we have found dear (and maybe not so dear), we would like to say that our experiences at Port Huron High School have been enriching and amusing.
