THE 1971 s T U D E N T Port Huron High School Port Huron, Michigan Roll up for the mystery tour Roll up, that’s an invitation. Roll up. to make a reservation Roll up for the mystery tour The magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away. Any tour naturally begins and ends with individuals of different feelings, ideas, patterns. And it’s each one of these individuals that comprise the ma ke-up of a school, a school where every individual strives to quench his own thirst for knowledge. Some drink greatly, others only in sips. But it matters not how much the individ- ual drinks but how much is actually absorded. And with each individual it’s different because each one is dif- ferent — each one has his own mood. 6 10 Contents Introduction 2 Student Life 12 Organizations 30 Sports 62 Faculty 84 Underclass 108 Seniors 136 Ads 170 . . Canned Heat As in the past, the 1970 Home- coming was the highlight of the school year. The air was full of fun and excitement leading up to the big day. It all began weeks before when all of the classes and many clubs began work on their floats. Excitement mounted as the moment of the parade, and later the game, arrived. Pictured from bottom left moving clockwise are the queen and her attendants; Senior attendants Gayle Williams and Kathy Heyer; the senior’s cowinning float, “Beany and Ce- cil”; Chris Albert, Homecoming Queen; the co winning junior float, “Sylvester and Tweety”; and sev- eral Big Reds in the Homecoming parade. iBll The freshmen, participating in their first Homecoming, made two fine choices as they selected Debbie Pendrock (BELOW) and Cheryl Winfield (RIGHT) to represent their class on the Queen’s Court. 16 The sophomores likewise elected two enthusiastic members of their class. Jean Andrews (ABOVE) and Barb Beattie (RIGHT ). The juniors, in their last Homecoming as underclassmen, made two fine selections when they chose Jenny Hunt (RIGHT) and Marsha Dinkins, (BHLOW) for the Queen ' s Court. 17 The beginning of school brings many things to mind mainly the thought of getting out of school. Although a new school year made many feel like dancing (TOP), it also brought headaches with the thought of all those books and hours of study (CEN- TER). And no matter who entered our hallowed halls they were always given a warm welcome by our friendly parking lot at- tendant, Mr. “Mel” Larcomc, shown at FAR RIGHT. TO ACF AC- Competition m Book Of m oOolt for Writing I 18 Pep Assemblies also played a significant role in student life. Not only because it gave a temporary reprieve from the boredom of classes but also because it gave the stu- dents a chance to yell off their frustrations. (AT RIGHT) Hillary Thigpen shows how fired-up he is after one of the pep assemblies. 20 21 The Port Huron Port Huron Northern football game was one of the more exciting highlights of the school year. The Seniors sparked a keg of spirit by “T.P.ing’’ Northern and then stealing the disputed victory bell. Although the Big Reds out-did Northern in spirit, crowd size, and half-time activities, they couldn’t quite outdo them in the game. RIGHT: Big Red Mark Limberg laughs at one of the banners held by P.H.H.S. fans, (banner shown at FAR RIGHT). 22 23 WJIl ' fl Winter also set the scene for many different activities within the school. One such activity was the Choir ' s Christmas assembly, pictured (AT UPPER LEFT). BELOW) that. Principal Chet Wydrznski tells Santa what he wants for Christmas. (AT CENTER) you see how creative some students can be this twelve foot injun appeared in the courtyards after one weekend of heavy snow. (ABOVE) Senior Bob Halley shows his artwork for the annual Christmas door decorating contest . I 25 Exams were something else students had to look “forward” to. Although many Seniors were exempted from their exams because of a three-point grade average, the majority of the student body was subjected to them. On this page you see some of the different stages of exams: the burden of taking home books; the seriousness, soli- tude. and frustration of studying; and finally the relief and relaxa- tion of students when those three days of testing are over. B.N.W. Beat Northern Week and that’s just what we did. The pictures on this page only show you a little of what happened that week — the spirit and pep generated can ' t ever be felt in these photographs. Beat Northern Week, initialed by the Action Club, was a week of ex- citement and activities for all students. Port Huron High spirit was at a climax for the year. Below vou see some of it in the pep assembly which started the week (BELOW AND LOW ER RIGHT) and in the faculty basketball team which defeated Northern ' s faculty (UPPER RIGHT). Big Reds came through again when the wrestling team defeated the Huskies for the second lime. Even though we lost the basketball game it was a victory spirit- wise. With fifty-six banners plastered over the gym walls and three-fourths of the crowd P.H.H.S. fans, it was still a triumph for Northern W eek . Crosby Stills ■ The BIG RED ' S varsity football team suffered through another tough season this year, winning only one game while losing eight. Several of these games were so close that they could have gone either way. Had the REDS gotten more breaks they might have seen more victories. One of these tight games was the Homecoming when Roseville scored with less than two minutes left to play. And with luck on Roseville’s side they took the victory. The BIG REDS made a lot of mistakes this year that cost them games, but with a year of experience under their belts, they are looking forward to next year. 66 Varsity Gains Experience BOTTOM ROW P Seppo, R Hodgins, L. Varsity, J-V Basketballers Regroup for Next Year This year ' s basketball teams put forth a tremendous amount of effort despite what the records show, and even in the face of defeat. Big Red fans never lost hope. Next year ' s varsity team will suffer greatly without the help of Seniors Dave Schultz, Jim Stanley, Dave Berish, Don Fowler, and Jim Early, all of whom will be lost to gradu- ation. The junior varsity team, whoever, had one of the better J.V. records in recent years. Many of the team members look like promising candidates for next year ' s varsity team. This year the team captured first place honors at the Central Michigan University relays, the E.M.L. meet, and the Re- gionals. They came out placed fourth in the state. Leading the charge was State Champion 440 runner Tim Pinnix. Tim, pictured above, was undefeated this year and broke several records with his fine running. Tim was also a member of the Big Reds’ record breaking mile relay team. As if that’s not enough, he also holds the 800 yard record which he set in 1969. His time of 48.6 at Mt. Clemens was only .3 of a second off the state record. Other outstanding performers were Fred Whitican, who holds the high hurdle record and firsts in the E.M.L. and Times Herald meets; Larry Collins with a record high jump of 6’4 3 4 M ike Forbes 1 2’9” in the pole vault (another record); a two mile record by Tom Kreutziger with 9:56:2; Dick Carrier who tied the 100 yard dash record with a time of 9.9 and broke the 220 record with a 21.3 time; and Bob Johnson, sixth in the state as a freshman in the long jump. This year’s team scored more points, 937 3 5, than any other Big Red track team in the history of Port Huron High School. 84 UPPER LEFT: Freshman shot putter Mark Limberg shows his style. Their hardwork and enthusiasm during Homecoming showed admirably on their float “The Mouse that Scored.” The rest of their year was filled with the activities and antics that only silly sophomores could sponsor. The Senior float. “Beany and Cedi” displayed all the hard work, plan- ning. and enthusiasm that all the seniors felt at their last Homecoming. The Tale of our Candy Sale Now that our senior year has come and gone, we can look back and recall the memories of our many activi- ties. The success of our candy sale made us the richest class in the school. Although oi±r float “Beany and Ce- cil tied for first place with the juniors, everyone knew which was the best. Planning the senior play took work but it was successful. Ordering of announcements, mea- suring for caps, and talking to counselors about future plans made the seniors realize that an end was near. The successful senior prom and baccalaureate all ultimately ended in commencement.
