PORT HURON HIGH SCHOOL Editor Beverly Stimson PORT HURON, MICHIGAN Assistant Editor Jeanne Sari Business Manager William Perry PORT HURON HIGH SCHOOL Editor Beverly Stimson PORT HURON, MICHIGAN Assistant Editor Jeanne Sari Business Manager William Perry The first year in the new Port Huron High School found us with the old 6 Red and W liite’ spirit and enthusiasm. The i Student ’ staff hopes that , as you glance through this book showing your friends , classes and activities you will remember the 1958 school year as a happy and successful one. 2 3 Administration 6 Dedication 9 Departments 14 Activities 48 Features 70 Athletics 106 Underclassmen 124 Seniors 146 Advertising 182 4 5 Superintendent Howard D. Crull Howard D. Crull, Superintendent of Port Huron Public Schools for the past sixteen years, is the leader of our school’s building and educational advancement programs. Port Huron is proud to have such a capable and energetic school leader. The Board of Education Evidence of time and effort expended by the Port Huron Board of Education is seen thro ughout the city. The 1957-1958 school year was another period where progress was made in the public schools of Port Huron to improve the opportunities for education. The Junior College was moved to the for- mer high school building where an increased student body was better served with an ex- panded program. A careful study of the school curriculum in all grades, and particularly on the high school level, was made to provide the oppor- tunity for students capable of doing work at an accelerated rate to do so. The vocational education field on the sec- ondary school level was studied. The Board of Education has been studying how best to meet the needs of an expanded school enrollment. Although new schools have been provided, the Board has been cognizant of the crowded conditions in some areas. The Board of Education is proud of the work being done throughout the school sys- tem— with the administrative and supervisory staff, the teachers, and students, working in close harmony and understanding. 7 Principal Mr. Tomlinson, our veteran principal of seventeen years, is known to all the students of P.H.H.S. as a true friend. We are all familiar with his pleasant smile and hearty “Hello”. Besides performing his administrative duties, he devotes much time, energy, and thought toward ways to make our high school days more memorable. Mr. Tomlinson, in every way, co-operates with both the students and teachers. He adds much to the keeping of the “old P.H.H.S. spirit” here in our new school. Dedication Miss Wiese is genuinely proud of the students, of their ac- complishments and of the honors they win. She is q uick to praise all our honest efforts and give credit where credit is due. We always know that she is behind us, supporting all our school activities enthusiastically. Students and teachers alike bring their problems to her, sure of a sympathetic ear. It is with pride, admiration, and respect that we dedicate the 1958 “Student” to our own Miss Wiese. 9 Counseling Miss Wiese, as assistant principal for a number of years, has helped with the administration of the school program: she has charge of pupil personnel records, attendance, the testing program— to name a few of her numerous duties. One of her important responsibilities is that of Guidance Director— She works closely with the coun- selors in their work with the students. Miss Kean and Miss Moore in an understanding man- ner assist the girls in making decisions. The girls know that when confronted with problems, they can al- ways confide in their counselor. MISS FLORENCE WIESE Assistant Principal MISS ELLEN KEAN MISS FRANCES MOORE Counseling Mr. Somme rville, our helpful Dean of Students, is a very busy man. Besides sharing the administrative responsibility of all our students, he works with the class sponsors in setting up their activities; and he schedules all activities after school hours, except the athletic events. Mr. Feick and Mr. Gerke, counselors, work with the boys in setting up their school programs. They, with patience and understanding, assist the boys in working out their problems. COLEN SOMMERVILLE Dean of Students GAYLORD FEICK ERNEST GERKE 11 t ‘Unity, Co-operation , Energy •• the ingredients of success in democracy 13 ‘The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” “The Red- White Fight Song” Come on and— Join our song for Port Huron High, The best school in this land Grand and glorious we’ll be victorious, The Red and White shall stand. Oh, she’s the stronghold of our community, She stands for all that’s Right 1 So fight, fight, fight for Alma Mater And show them with our might. CHORUS: Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! On to victory. A special project of the Band this year was the presentation of concerts for community service clubs to better acquaint the public with the quality of music being studied as well as the level of performance acquired by stu- dents in the Instrumental Program. They observed teachers at work in classrooms throughout the city. Also, teachers discussed the prob- lems and the merits of teaching at club meetings. Co-operation , Work and Enjoyment ... PEP CLUB The Pep Club of P.H.H.S. is the backbone of our “red and white” spirit. Scholars Compete The senior class was proud to learn that two of its members, Cynthia Clark and Arthur Schermerhorn, passed the first National Merit Scholarship test, which permitted them to take the final test in January. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is an independent, non-profit organization created to devise and administer a system of scholarships for higher education. On October 22, 1957, 300,000 seniors from all over the United States and its provinces took a National Merit Scholarship test given by this organization. Out of these, 7,500 were selected to be allowed to take the final test. 78 in Nationwide Contest Arthur Schermerhorn and Michael Krabach were suc- cessful in passing the test for West Point; Also Rob- ert Hollenshead and Donald Westphal (not shown) passed. 79 Students D emonstrate Scholastic Abilities MARY LOTRIDGE Mary Lotridge was selected by her fellow classmates and members of the faculty as the D.A.R. Good Citizen from P.H.H.S. Out of the senior class three girls were selected to receive this award. The girls are chosen who possess the qualities of depend- ability, leadership, service, and patriotism. The faculty then selects one of the three girls to be Port Huron High Good Citizen. MARILYN F. HILL This year’s winner of the Betty Crocker Award was Marilyn F. Hill. Every year General Mills sponsor a search for the American Homemaker of Tomorrow. The two main purposes of it are: First, to find, through a knowledge and attitude test, the girl to receive a scholarship for advanced study; second, to pro- vide instructional aids for pupils and teachers for added educational experiences. 80 The P.H.H.S. students elected to attend Bay City Central High School are, left to right: John Zauner, Becky Falk, Chip Bankson, Susan Seibert, Arthur Smith, and Joan Burnell. Student Exchange Program Miss Muhlitner, Student Council Advisor, greets the Bay City Exchange Students. They are, left to right: Michael Faucher, Joyce Leix, Linda Steadman, Bob Koch, chairman of the Student Exchange Committee, Allan Anderson, Dave Harfst, and Dan Royal. Six exchange students from Bay City visited us the week of March tenth, attending classes at P.H.H.S. Activities were planned for the students so they could have an enjoyable and worth-while time while in Port Huron. Among these activities were a dance on Friday night and a visit to the W.T.T.H, radio station on Saturday, as guests of James Wallington of the Teen Time Show. Six P.H.H.S. students were select- ed to attend Bay City High School for one week. The object of this visit is to learn more about other schools and how they operate. They were guests in the homes of the students who visited here. An enjoyable and memorable time was had by the P.H.H.S. students. Current Fads Displaying the attractive ensemble of the button-down ivy league shirt with rich, black corduroy slacks is our model (upper left) Richard Fox. This style is very effective in combination and is very collegiate in appearance. David Nicholson (at left) sports the handsome new bulky look in the crew- neck sweater, khaki pants, khaki car coat, and dirty buck shoes. This style is often popular with and very much admired by the fair sex. Here (lower left) we have Larry Heald modeling this very dashing outfit; the sweater vest and flannel slacks. This is the most recent development in male casuals, and is a very handsome com- bination. FOR AN EVENING LONG REMEMBERED Judith Rowles (below) is gowned in a lovely ballerina formal with a soft, swirly, danceable skirt— a beautiful gown, accompanied by brocade embroidered slippers. Wilfred Schneider (below) dons the white dinner jacket for the J-Hop. 82 and Fashions For the attractive out-of-door look, model Linda Heering (upper right) de- monstrates the modified Parisian style head band, and the swirly, stitched-down plaid pleated skirt and knee-socks com- bination. The cool colors, generally greens or grays, give the effect of gentle elegance. We have a feminine counterpart of a style, also popular with the other sex, the crewneck sweater a nd the sporty gum- drop shoes, worn by our model (right) Roberta King. “Tiny” Lorraine Landon (lower right) shows us a new French hair style, the chignon, or “bun”; other new touches are the elasticized, charming, waist blouse, and white tennis shoes, accom- panied by white wool socks . SPRING ENTERS-FLOATING Constance Brown (lower left) wears the newsy chemise— the new look in easy line fashion. Its perfection of styling is the epitome of modern beauty, as fresh as spring. Judith Johnson (lower center) is gowned in a misty, street-length formal with flowing, fine lines— just the gown for an evening at Kenwick-on the- Lake. 83 Goal Achieved by The Student Council. Even before our feminine cheer- leaders had time to put on their uniforms, a group of senior boys had organized a large part of the student body in the Lounge and hall for a pep rally. What a wonderful sendoff! Students and teachers alike were living this day at a stepped-up tempo, and our school spirit was at its peak. The parade was almost a mile long with such exciting variety that no one could truthfully say whose entry was the best. Our team was victorious in dunking the Bathers, 26-14; this set the stage for a victory dance at which our attractive queen, Mary Lotridge, and her radiant court reigned. Enjoyable was the music of Mr. Wade and his “Commanders,” who provided just the right atmosphere for a pleasant evening and the appropri- ate crescendo for an exciting homecoming. 2nd Prize Winner- Sophomore Float First Prize Car Owner, Bonnie Davis 3rd Prize Winner- Junior Float First Prize Winner-Senior Float Cheerleaders 85 Spirit Runs High as Parade Begins. Anticipation ran high as forty seniors and six spon- sors embarked on the New York - Washington Trip the week of October 12. Soon they were to see the beauti- ful and historic sights of New York, Washington and Virginia. They first approached the rolling hills and honey- suckle accents of Virginia and Williamsburg. They had the feeling of stepping into a page ripped from his- tory. They saw the beautiful old homes surrounded by Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Un- known Soldier, in Arlington, Virginia. 94 Washington Trip Carolyn Moore, Judith Straffon, Diane Day, Margaret Rhadigan, and Larry How- ard, pose in front of the Lincoln Memori- al. their rolling lawns and stately trees; then, sterner things - the old jail with its thick, heavy walls; and they even tried out the stocks. They also visited the beauti- ful Arlington National Cemetery, watched the changing of the guard, which was executed in solemn, stately precision. Then, off to our nation’s capitol. They saw the United States Supreme Court in session and were awe- struck by the dignity and beauty of the occasion and its meaning to our nation. They admired the white -columned expanse of the Lincoln Memorial, and the Great Emanci- pator. Probably the most impressive sight was the white - domed Capitol Building, surrounded by great white - pillared porches. Stately and proud, it houses the clockwork of our nation. Regretfully bidding Washington good-bye, they went to New York where gaiety was the watchword. They saw the glass-paneled United Nations’ building, a Broadway Musi- cal; they took in a night club, called the Casino Royal. It was a wonderful trip— one of the highlights of the senior year. Accompanist: James Crumback The A Capella Choir presented “Ruddigore” as their fourth annual Gilbert and Sullivan operetta on the evenings of May 23 and 24. The action of the story took place in the fishing village of Redderine in the XVIIIth Century. Robin Oakapple, a young farmer, is in love with the village beauty, Rose Maybud. He is, however, too shy to declare his affections. Rose is un- aware of his passion and accepts Richard Dauntless, a Man-O-War’s man, as her lover. When Rose learns of Robin’s love, she turns her affections to him, since he is a prosperous farmer, and Dick is only a poor sailor. In the meantime Robin is identi- fied as the true Baronet of Ruddigore. His younger brother, Sir Despard Murgatroyd, has been posing as the accursed villain. When Despard learns of his own innocence, he falls madly in love with Mad Margaret. Margaret has been insane throughout the first Act, but both she and Des- pard reform and are married in the second Act. One of the highlights of the show occurred in the second Act when a picture gallery of ancestors of Ruddi- gore step down from their frames and discuss Robin’s problems with him. These life-size portraits were painted by Larry Heald. The finale was a hodge podge of gay music and dances. The story had the usual happy ending. The performance was judged a huge success by audience and cast alike. Hopeful Young Performers Practice - Practice - Practice October Serenade, the junior class Spotlight swung out full power last fall, giving talent from all classes an opportunity to entertain with swing, rock and roll, hilarious comedy, and novelty acts - Port Huron discovered unsuspected talent. The enthusiastic spirit of the performers infected the audience, and it was debatable which had the better time. All the acts were well received, and some were called back for three and four encores. Student performers were Butch Massman and Frank Elliott, Gail McIntyre, Cathy Dunbar, JoAnn Hough, Sharon Nordgren, Judy Merinski, Patricia Cline and Diane Gunn, Nancy Streeter, Armstead Diggs, Sue Odom, Darlene Moore, Phyllis Herple, Sandy Anton, the Off Beats ' band, and Ed Ligocki and his band. The generally unsung heroes for the production of the Spotlight were: Mrs. Jacobus, fac- ulty director of the program, assisted by Mr. Curti, Miss Edwards, Mr. Phillips, Mr. Wade, Mr. Harrison, and Mrs. Alexander; Student general chairman, Pat Smith; Script writers, Sharon Murdock, Tom Saunby, and Becky Falk; chairmen of the intricate job of business man- agement, Judy Hunt and Joy Hoffman; chairmen of the spirited publicity campaign, Pat Downs, Susan Crockett, and Jim Stewart; Mary Lincoln ' s committee handled the eye-catching posters; and Jim Crumback supervised the lighting effects. “Off Beats” - Robert Schneider, Franklin Oldham, Robert Wes- ton, and Robert Wilton - play “Jail House Rock.” In the “October Spotlight 99 “The Three Notes” . . . In this stadium a battle for the “Little Brown Jug” and a Homecoming victory was a must. The football team came through with great success, beating Mount Clemens 26 to 6 for these school honors. Such defensive skill as displayed here helped Port Huron to a 26 to 6 victory over Mount Clemens in the battle for the “Little Brown Jug.” As shown above, Flint Northern’s ability to put men on base was a deciding factor in their win over Port Huron’s baseball team. 122 As Seasons Change , so do Sports Dennis Barth, Gene Warshefski, James Lymburner, James Likins Gary Lee Smith, and Harvey Philko are shown on the firing line.
