JLeavinq the old school Two very mementous occasions occurred in January of 1957. The first was Mr. Tomlinson ' s locking the doors of the old school building — closing behind them our years of pleasant memories and accomplishments. The second event took place as Mr. Tomlinson turned the key — opening the doors to a future of even greater accomplishments, and which even now includes a past of equally pleasant memories. MORTON J. Guides for the new Sophomores, and sponsors of their welcoming assembly. 2. Worked with class officers on Dress-up Days. 3. Sponsored Homecoming dance, netting $300. 4. Representatives attended E.M.L. and Southern Peninsula Schools ' Conferences. 5. Appropriated $100 for Care . 6. Suggested new policies for new school . 7. First Prize Winner Junior Class First Prize Car Owner, Gary O ' Donnell P.H.H.S. had the good fortune to be blessed this year with the peppiest cheerleaders imaginable. To them we owe a vote of Thanks. and the qinl qo Uq. Take six pretty girls, 59 crazily decorated cars and some unique floats; combine with a zippy high-stepping band and a winning football team; throw in a spirited faculty and student body; mix well with excitement on a beautiful fall day, and you ' ll have the most terrific Homecoming Day P.H.H.S. has ever had. The gaiety was contagious. Everywhere was heard and seen Beat Fferndale! The question, Who will be queen? echoed through the minds of all . The parade was one of the longest we ' ve ever had, and the game one of the most exciting. But nothing could compare to the thrill that went through the crowd when our Student Council President, Steve Sischo, announced that lovely Rosalyn Sorenson was our Homecoming Queen. The dance following the game was a sight to behold with the queen and her regal court of five reigning over the couples. The music was very danceable and the gym looked its best. Dance A benefit game was played in January between the Aikman Sunbeam Bread team, composed of faculty members of the Port Huron Public Schools; and volunteer high school boys. Both performances were well attended - The play was directed by Miss Dona Young. She was assisted by student directors Jeanne Sari, and Jane Bigger. Southland Shadows faded as the evening drew to a close. 67 The citizens of Port Huron were honored to hear Dr. John C. Hannah, M. S. U. President, speak on Why do we build? at the formal dedication of the new Port Huron High School on February 25. The ceremonies were presided over by Howard D. Crull, Superintendent of Port Huron Schools; the high school band, under the direction of Mr. Clarence Wade, played the National Anthem, which was followed by the invocation by the Reverend A. W. Sheehy. The choir then sang How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place directed by Mr. Jimmie Lobaugh. YYISU Pneaident upeaka Dr. John C. Hannah delivering the main address. The faculty attends en masse. at ft onmal Dedication Mr. Tomlinson receives keys to new school from board of education president, Mr. William Brahany, Jr. After greetings from Board of Education President, Mr. William Brahany, Jr., various presentations were made: Mrs. Walter Munster presented flags for the classrooms to Mr. Tomlinson, and Mrs. Lucille Gergowski presented to Mr. Tomlinson and Student Council President Stephen Sischo the American flag for the outside poles. Robert Moak then accepted a picture of the first graduating class from P. H. H. S. from Mr. Neil Davis. The two keys to the new school were presented to Mr. Tomlinson and Mr. Brahany, by the architects, Mr. Wyeth and Mr. Kingscott. After the dedicatory address, Mr. Frank O. Staiger, board member, led the audience in singing God Bless America. The Reverend Mark M. Burgess closed the program with the benediction. Qualifying, teat Last fall a sizeable group of seniors took the Qualifying Scholarship Test which was designed to select candidates for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University require that students desirous of scholarships must have taken the Qualifying Scholarship Test. Scores on these tests, along with other pertinent information, determine the scholarship winners. Bulk The student and faculty of Port Huron High School are proud to have a true scholar in their midst. Jeffrey Bush, one of the students taking the scholarship qualifying test, earned the honor of entering final competition in the National Merit Scholarship Test. 71 Students succeed in bninqinq. honon . . JtigHgMB Lewis Fenner, Chapes T.vPhr™ss, Richar MR07C 7 cat The N.R.O.T.C. test is required of all boys who wish to enroll in college as a regular student in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Program. The following five seniors passed the test successfully: Lynn Mantikoski, David Kerbyson, Charles T. Purkiss, Lewis Fenner, Dennis Fenner, Dennis Martin, and Howard Woods, A former P.H.H.S. graduate, Michael Gkekas, also passed the test. In February Richard Robins received an Air Force appointment from Congressmen Robert J. McIntosh, Pat McNamara, and ex-representative Jesse Wolcott. This entitled him to take a series of tests in March for entrance into the Air Force Academy. Y u l t ir j avid YYlillen. STATE CO-OP OFFICER A convention of the State Co-op Clubs was held in Battle Creek on the 4th and 5th of January to elect the executive members of the Club. David Miller, President of the P.H.H.S. Co-op Club, campaigned for the office of Vice-President. He had strong opposition from two other aspirants - P.H.H.S. was proud to learn that David was the winning candidate - Vice-President of the State Co-op Clubs. Mr. Wallace Hettle is sponsor of P.H.H.S. Co-op Club. 72 . . . to themnelven and P H H S YHanij, YYlacZachin Mary MacEachin was chosen by members of the 1957 senior class and the faculty to be the D.A.R. Good Citizen for Port Huron High. This award is given each year throughout the state and nation to selected senior girls who possess the qualities of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism . Mary was. one of the three girls chosen by the Senior class as candidate for the award. The faculty made the final selection. Betty Cnocken U eat General Mills sponsored a search for the American Homemaker of Tomorrow. Two purposes for the test were: first, to find, through a knowledge and attitude test, the girls to receive scholarships for advanced study; second, to provide instructional aids for pupils and teachers for added educational experiences. Cadet Band Saxophone Section The Varisty Band is primarily a Symphonic Concert Band. However, many of its members participate in Marching Band during the Football season the play for the Basketball games at the new gym. A special feature this year was an exchange concert with the Marine City High School Band. The 1956 edition of the Big Reds 1 football team ended the season with a 5-4 record. This record was good enough to win them second place in the Eastern Michigan League. The League Champion was East Detroit. The team ' s greatest weakness was the lack of speed and experience in the backfield. Kenneth Martin, the fullback, sparked the team throughout the year playing defense as well as offense.
